The old forum is back
« on: February 01, 2009, 11:53:56 AM »
Hi everyone

I did a lot of reading, learning about mySQL databases and experimenting over the last 24 hours, and I am pleased to announce that the old forum is back. Access here.

For those of you who don't know, this forum was originally located at www.good-music-guide.com/forum, but the database got corrupted in an upgrade and became unusable back in 2007. The data was still there, but the forum software couldn't access it.

I have managed to resurrect the old forum - it will be a read-only archive. You cannot post or reply to any existing posts there. You are welcome to cut-and-paste any posts you think worthy to the new forum here to continue the discussions.

Be careful - some of you with usernames on both forums - don't get them mixed up - the two fora look very similar. Best not to login to the old forum at all. You should be able to read all the posts without logging in.

enjoy!

Cheers
Rob

P.S. Please report any bugs as a reply here.

That is fantastic Rob!  I've only been on the new forum, so it will be a treat for me to go and peruse the old original GMG!  Awesome!  0:)

It's fun to know that karlhenning was once k a rl h e nn i ng, and BullDog was a Labrador pup (assuming it's the same Don). ;D

There shouldn't be any rush. As long as we do not post or upgrade to fiddle, the old forum should be stable and secure. It should last in perpetuity.

Success at last! Many thanks, Rob, for your efforts!  8)
I'm sure all the old-forum material will spur a new wave of discussions and renewed insights here. Just one thing, though: it seems we can't log into our profiles in order to browse our past messages en masse, but maybe we're not supposed to for technical reasons?

I have disabled many of the features of the forum to prevent any changes to the database and therefore keep the system stable.

I have now changed the cookie system, so that you should be able to login to old and new forums independently without being logged out of the other.

Hello Rob - been a while since we've exchanged forum posts/PMs, but thanks for your diligent effort to get the 'Old Forum' back online - many are certainly appreciative of your forbearance - Dave  :)

Many thanks for bringing the old board back to life. :)

How do I search the old forum? Whenever I try, I get results from the new forum.
