Sarge, EMI did a superb job remastering that Klemperer recording, I think you'll like it.  Don't know how it sounds in vinyl but on cd it's detailed, transparent and warm. :)

The guys who delivered for a measly sum, in tiny font. And nine links to Amazon.com. ::)

But usually I don't say at all what the source of the cat-draggins was. So consider even the tiniest font (and the cat's look) a nice little curtsy to Abeille.  ;)

Sarge: I think you'll have lots of fun with the Boulez 5th and 7th. I like the 1st, too, but wouldn't claim it would necessarily receive such praise universally. I really only am not keen on his 8th.

I heard his Eighth with the Staatskapelle during the Easter 2007 Mahler cycle in Berlin and really enjoyed it. Some who've heard both that performance and the later one issued by DG think the live performance superior. Too bad DG didn't release that one instead. Would have made a great souvenir anyway. About 1 and 9: I'm still on the fence but will probably hit the buy button at some point.

I like the 5th and 7th too, and I think I would rank Boulez's finest as the 6th, 7th and the 9th.  Just so you know where I'm coming from I would rank Gielen and Klemperer as tops in the 9th.  That's just the style that I like, and Boulez fits that mold pretty well but all three still offer up distinct interpretations. :)

Jens likes the 1st, you like the 9th (Klemperer's is one of my fave Ninths too). Okay, I'm starting to lose my balance on that fence  ;D

I was oh so close to acquiring the 2fer of Brendel playing some Beethoven sonatas and other piano pieces (picture on right)when I saw that I could acquire (at nearly the same price) a 2fer of Beethoven's late sonatas (picture on left).

Now the reason for this is to acquire Op 109 - which I have read Brendel does well. Are these the same performances of Op 109 (no 30)? And is there some opinion on which one of these might be better (or if they are equally good - also good to know). I have all the other pieces on both, so the only reason to buy either is to hear Brendel's interpretation.  I am stuck.
Offenbach gets a raw deal in recordings considering his talent! For a discussion of this outstanding composer too little recorded: http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,5572.

So they did release it? Interesting.

Have you heard this previously? I recall finding it comfortably better than the Sony/Columbia version.

No, I haven't, but do have hopes for it. It's Walter pre heart attack, live, with full sized orchestra. Should be good.

And that's pretty much how it works out, in a nutshell.

I'm hesitant to say more because I've only, inexplicably, heard it once since I bought it last year. My not remembering to rip it when I did might be to blame, as I'm not quite sure where the CD is right now, to revisit it. :( However, I do remember clearly how much less polite it is than the Columbia reading, to the extent of feeling like the 'real' Walter Bruckner 9th, next to it.

Why not?  A musicweb reviewer did just that for the Fischer cycle.  Reviewers have done that for Haydn's SQ, PS and PT box sets.  It's important because many times the performer changes his/her approach to the music as he/she progresses to more mature works.  His review does not indicate that he did any kind of sampling, just that he didn't like the packaging and organization.  He makes almost no specific comments about the music making itself.  Don't defend Hurwitz here, he did not post a real review, he simply took an opportunity to slam a conductor that he clearly has a grudge against.

Edit: besides you've straw-manned my point.  It's not a hardly listen vs completely listen, that's a false dichotomy.  I was clearly saying that he should have listened to more than just the first cd.  His specific comments suggested that is all that he did.

Another instance of misunderstanding. I'm not defending Hurwitz - he can defend himself if need be! What I wrote was that IMO he just sampled here and there (or attempted to, but found it inconvenient, so just dropped the lid on the whole enterprise). IOW he did no serious attempt to listen to the music-making. That kind of five-a-day reviewing routine can't really be taken seriously. That's why I think he did not - never intended to - listen to all 30+ discs in the set.

I have the one on the left, although I haven't listened to it recently to say just how good it is; but I wouldn't hesitate in other circumstances to say it's a good choice.  In this circumstance, I'm not sure.  I don't have the one on the right, but I do have another issue in the same series, in which Brendel plays several late Schubert sonatas, which is excellent both in terms of the performance and the sonics.   These were recorded in concert, not in the studio, so I would not be surprised if this Beethoven release also consisted of in-concert performances--which means, of course, they aren't the same recording as option number 1.

Hope that helps some.
