I'm not sure, George. It is in stock, anyway, at Amazon UK but not available from amazon.com or amazon.de.

Are those "new" recordings, or the '60s ones repackaged?

These are a reissue of old Melodiya recordings.  I have these on the older Venezia issue.

Thanks! But it's not really belated; I don't think I ever mentioned it.

Right. They were recorded in 1969 through 1974

I, too.  An interesting alternative.  I look forward to reading Sarge's comments on the set.  IIRC you praised them a few years back, perhaps piquing my own interest among others...?

Ah, I would have given dates, but the Venezia booklet is in Cyrillic only.

Snapped this up on Amazon UK for a great price:

I'm not a big fan of Harnoncourt, but I recognize his talent, especially in Baroque, Classical, and Romantic music. I own his Schumann set as well. I really need to listen to it.

After seeing Sarge purchase this, I had to buy it as well since I'm such a sucker for Sibelius. Now, I own every Sibelius cycle except for Sanderling's on Berlin Classics. That is the only one I lack.

I see.  Which do you prefer, Maazel/VPO, or Maazel/Pittsburgh?

I'm not a fan of Maazel's Sibelius. My favorite Sibelius conductors are (in no particular order): Vanska, Berglund, Bernstein, Ashkenazy, and Segerstam.

In my assessment, Maazel wasn't a particularly inspired Sibelian. Maazel's style is too flashy for this music. Maazel excels at orchestral showpieces like Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition or Respighi's Pines of Rome. In other words, music that's not especially deep, but just plain fun to listen to.

I don't agree with that, I think Maazel's Pittsburgh cycle contains some of the finest recordings of Sibelius symphonies that I have heard.

Well, Maazel just isn't a great conductor in my opinion. It's all surface with him. There's nothing deeply felt in his conducting. His Sibelius is some of the worst I've heard on record. He shows no affinity for Sibelius' idiom.

Just bought:

Although this isn't the right cover, I bought the original recording.

Brian

I love Maazel's Pittsburgh Sibelius 6; it's the one which, for me, offers perfect pace and proportion - nothing is rushed, nothing drags, the violins really sing.

Just placed a small order on the following CD set with my favorite NE based Amazon MP vendor ...
