Hi everybody
« on: December 28, 2009, 11:22:37 AM »
My friend Tahar told me about this great classical music forum - which I have been reading for a few months before registering; and I can tell it IS really great!

Well, I'm Gilles, French, born in Bretagne (France) and living in Poland right now after being in Norway and Denmark for some years - and I have never crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

I took part during the last years in several french-speaking forums, and I regularly write reviews for a website devoted  to classical music. I play the church organ, and very badly the piano (which doesn't mean that I play well the organ...). I'am mostly interested in contemporary and 20th century's composers.

my favorite composers are Britten, Copland, Maxwell-Davies, Nørgård, Takemitsu, Tippett, Sallinen, Scelsi and Lutosławski. I also enjoy the American symphonists, especially Harris, Schuman, Hanson, Hovhaness, Gould and generally the so-called "Open-Prairie" or "Americana" Sound inherited from Copland.

I have only 2 wishes : that you will understand my messages in spite of my french accent, and that I will find something interesting to say in so rich and erudite a forum...

Hi Gilles, and welcome.  Your English is just fine--as is sometimes the case, better than some English-speaking people!  (And your English is much better than my French.  :-[)

Your list of composers has many whom people here admire; I'm a huge fan of Britten and Scelsi, just to cite two you mentioned.

Anyway, enjoy yourself!

Hi Bruce ! Thank you very much for you welcome  ! And for your indulgence toward my english...

I just realize that there is a huge jetlag between me and you : 9 hours, wow...

Very welcome ypu are, your Holmboe postings certainly were great.

Though there are a couple there Im not too familiar with, we're certainly on the same wavelength.

I'm a great fan of that style and those composers. Love Piston too.

As I live in Bergen, Norway (and am a dedicated Francophile) - I note with interest that you have spent time in snowy Norway.

Nice to see a Nordmann here - eg taler faktisk norsk også  :) I really love Norway, the most beautiful country of Europe. I went almost everywhere from Kristiansand to Narvik and Lofoten Islands. Fantastic landscapes - fantastic people.

I'm very glad to hear that you appreciate my little comments about Holmboe; I discovered his music when I was living in Denmark, the Musikbibliotek had all these Dacapo, Kontrapunkt and Danacord cd's which were almost impossible to get in France, with Holmboe, Nørgård, Sørensen, Rosing-Schow, Nørholm, Gudmundsen-Holmgreen and all these great composers.

If you like the Open Prairie Sound, we're sure on the same wavelength ! I didn't mention Piston as his style sounds a bit different to me, but I really like it too.And I forgot to mention Robert Ward and David Maslanka, who wrote very beautiful cycles of symphonies in this coplandian style.

Well; I guess we'll often meet in the music threads of this forum !

Merci pour votre message de bienvenue ;  votre français est excellent ! Puisque vous aimez Elgar, vous devez absolument découvrir Tippett et Britten !

Parenthetically . . . I like (much) Elgar, and also (much) Tippett & Britten . . . but I somehow don't feel that enjoyment of Elgar will necessarily map onto enjoyment of the two later composers.  Very different idiom.
