Of the two Strauss wrote by FAR the best set of two études for horn, so obviously he wins.

I voted for Mahler because he is louder, more often.

I do think that R. Strauss was the more competent orchestrator, though.

Well, of those two, Mahler is my favorite.  Not necessarily BETTER, mind you :); just my preference.  Just sayin'. ;)

Love both composers' music, equally.  You are a cruel man.   >:(

I definitely enjoy Mahler's music more (when I'm in the mood mind you), but R. Strauss was an amazing composer. I acknowledge both composers as greats, but Mahler wins for me.

Strauss. Very easy for me because he's always been one of my top two faves.
Martha doesn't signal when the orchestra comes in, she's just pursing her lips.

BANANA!!!!

I'm surprised that even you are using one of the favorite words of the herd.

greg

I never understood why "banana" is a favorite word of a bunch of guys...

I can understand "dancing banana,"
but just plain "banana"....  ???

BANANA!!!!

Dana?  Welcome back!  Long time no see...and as you can tell, nothing much has changed (though there've been a few cast changes).  ;D

Mahler. There's something about Strauss that strikes me a bit artificial. Not a lot, but its there.

Strauss is good, and my ears have yet to quarrel with him--but Mahler moves me in ways Strauss does not even come near.

Strauss is VERY moving - his operas in particular. But I think Strauss certainly shows a bit more range having composed songs, choral pieces, operas, tone poems, symphonies, concerti for multiple instuments, etc. Of course, both are pretty wonderful, and frankly the other Strauss was pretty remarkable too!
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

rappy

We had that poll already.

I voted for Strauss.  :D
