One-click Amazon image function
« on: January 09, 2011, 03:07:43 AM »
Many of you add CD cover art from Amazon to show a particular CD. I have made this a one-click affair.

When posting a message, you will notice a new Amazon icon option - it looks like this --->

When you click it, it adds some Bulletin Board Code called the ASIN code. Simply put Amazon's 10 digit ASIN number (and nothing else) between the tags, and your image is automatically added.

This works for any item on Amazon; CDs, books, electronics, everything

What's an ASIN number? Every Amazon item has its own unique 10 digit ASIN number - it is shown in the Product Details section of every Amazon item page. For books, this will be the ISBN-10 number.

Disclaimer: As well as displaying the CD image, it adds a small "Buy it" post-it that takes you straight to Amazon's page for that CD.  If anyone chooses to buy the item, GMG gets a small commission that helps keep this forum running.

Here is an example. I simply add the ASIN number B000099156 between the tags to get this:

Let me know if you find this helpful, or confusing.

cheers
Rob

Oh, BTW, would it be possible to have a smaller default size for the image? Or perhaps to include attributes to the tags, to adjust the width and height of the resulting image?

Smart to add the click-through, Rob.  Hope it helps!

This IS splendid.

I would just like to make a note though; in the unusual event that the disk you are posting doesn't have an "official" Amazon pic, just the ones from customer uploads, then it won't post that pic here. If you try it, you will find that all you get is the "Buy Here" part of the tag. Of course, you can always use the old way for just those. :)

Just out of curiosity.....what is the percentage or commission that GMG gets from 'linked' Amazon purchases?  Does it go by CD dollar value?  Or total value of order?  Example, let's say a GMGer purchases $150 of merchandise, is there an approximate value that GMG gets?

If it's top secret info, I understand.  I just always wondered.   :)

Somewhere I saw the number 5% being bandied about. Not sure if it was an hypothetical or an actual. That would be nice though. :)

It varies according to item and total orders per month. Starts at 5% and goes up. Maximum 10% for really big referrers (not GMG). GMG averages between 6 and 7%.

Thanks in advance

Thanks Rob.  That is a fairly significant amount, which is great.

How do I know if my linking of Amazon via GMG actually worked?  I tried to make sure I did this on my last order through Amazon.ca, but I don't see anything on my order details that suggests or says that a portion of the sale dollar value will be forwarded to GMG?   :-[

When you use this function is there anyway to resize the image or post several on the same line?  I felt pretty sheepish using up a huge amount of a page on the purchases thread, just to have someone quote me and use up the rest of the page.

Not in the present form of the mod.

However, don't worry too much about taking up so much of the screen - its only virtual real estate and a few pixels.

Hey Rob :),

the Amazon linking does'nt seem to be working for me?

I keep getting the message "Message body is empty" when I attempt to submit a post with the ASIN tags.

This is probably due to you have to have some sort of text in order to make the post. I don't think you can simply insert an image without saying something. This would be my guess.

That is a known problem.  There must be some text before the image tag.  Text that comes afterwards does not prevent the problem.
