Good find...mine's the opposite: when I toggle the view, the right side border of the text box returns and it works normally.  Or so I presume, not having typed to the edge, yet.  But we'll know NOW!

Works fine with view toggled on.

I'll add my thanks to the others, first.

This is all great fun for members of the View Toggling Society, but can someone explain what the point of 'view-toggling' is? Of course I appreciate that people will say 'If you have to ask, you'll never understand anyway'.

And by the way, when I DO toggle the view so as to get my right hand edge back, I find the cursor keeps disappearing while I'm typing into the box, making inserting and correcting text vxry mich morre dyffklt.

;D (I assume your partial differential equation solving skills are still as strong as I saw them a year ago, so here goes...)

If it's turned on, an italicised word, for example, will appear italicised, and not as a word between tags. And pictures will appear as themselves (and you can even drag their corners around and resize them) and not as a URI between image tags. There is an option in your profile to make this the default behaviour.

go to your profile - then modify profile - then look and layout. Toward the end is a choice of showing the quick rely box. Once you have it, if you choose it, the text to a reply message goes immediately to the quick reply. If you want to go to the usual reply, click the little - (minus sign) that will appear when the quick reply box appears and you will then be thrown into the full 'reply' page you are used to. I only mention this in case you wanted to skip the quick reply for some reason.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Trying to recall when and how I could conceivably have found myself solving partial differential equations here, Navneeth!

Perfectly explained, thank you. I can find the 'quick reply' options and have played with those (hours of family fun), but I can't find a 'view toggle' option anywhere in my profile. Or anything like it. Which is fine: 'Hunt the View Toggler' is a good game.

No, that bit isn't in your profile, it is in the long form reply box area. Look at the row of icons above the smilies. The one at the far right, which appears a blue cursor arrow between red brackets, is actually a toggle that shows how the finished product will actually look. My own experience with that control is that I can indeed see the finished roduct, but need to toggle back in order to edit. Perhaps it behaves differently for me... :'(

Thanks Gurn. I see that. An excellent description of, er ... how to View the Toggle and Toggle the View.

I'm not getting any problems with the text box on replies. I have tested on a PC with IE 7, as well as a Mac with Firefox and Safari. No issues.

Those of you that are, can you tell me what OS/browser combination you are using?

If you are using IE 6, then please ditch it and update to a proper browser (to paraphrase Richard Dawkins' comment regarding Liberty University). I suggest Firefox, Chrome or Safari. Or even IE 7 if you must.

cheers

A fix for the text box wrap issue:

whatever browser you are using, clear its cache and reload the page.

For those that are interested, your browser is storing an old version of the forum's stylesheet (the bit of code that formats each page), and applying it to the new version of the forum. Incompatible.

By clearing your cache, you are forcing your browser to load the new version of the stylesheet that applies to the new version of the forum software.

Let me know if this fixes the problem.

cheers

Interesting.  With Vista and Firefox 7 I get the infinite box.  With Windows 7 and Firefox it's back to normal.  With Vista & IE9 it's normal, too.  I haven't tried clearing the cache to see if that fixes the Vista/Mozilla issue.  Don't want the hassle of resetting cookies and site preferences for all my frequent use sites.  ;D

Thanks for the work and the investigation, Rob.  And once again let's all sing the praises of the new site.  What's it been, four years now?  And with scarcely a glitch!  Hooray!

Great and glorious Oz, all hail and praise and thanks!

Seems to have fixed it for me.  Windows XP, Firefox 4.0

BTW, Rob, for those of us who still stick to XP, and have no immediate need to replace our computers, IE 7 and IE 8 are not options--they screw up everything so we can't load most programs, including IE itself.  IE8 was somewhat better than IE7--it screwed up only half the programs, whereas IE7 screwed up almost every program.

Which is why I use Firefox and Opera almost exclusively now.

Don't want the hassle of resetting cookies and site preferences for all my frequent use sites.  ;D

Firefox gave me the option of clearing the cache without clearing cookies, so I didn't have to do that. Wouldn't Mozilla have a similar option? Edit--oh, sorry, you were talking about Firefox.  So you can definitely clear the cache without clearing cookies--when you click on "clear history", click on "details" when the box opens, and you can pick what to clear--cache, cookies, browsing history, etc.

Hi Rob - I'm on a VISTA laptop - w/ Firefox 7.0.1 I get the lack of word 'wrap-around' - I'm now on the same laptop w/ Windows Explorer 9.0 and have the normal respond box, so definitely a browser issue.  Just continuing to type to make sure that the word wrap works w/ IE - don't have Chrome on this computer to test.  Hope this is of some help along w/ David's response - Dave :)

Yep, worked for me, too. Firefox 7.0.1 and Windows 7... :D

I was just fooling around. As usual.

It's called 'Show WYSIWYG editor on post page by default.'. You can find it in the Look and Layout section.

The only issue I have is when the cursor gets 'trapped' within tags. I'd select and embolden a word, but as I'd continue typing the ensuing words will sometimes appear in bold too. I will then have to go back to the normal mode, get the cursor out of the tags and then resume the textual blather.
