I can't believe we don't have a thread on this. Anyway, if I've missed it somehow, sorry.

I have a question. Did either the Petersen Quartet  record The Hoffmeister, K 499? Initial investigation suggests no, but surely that can't be right . They wouldn't just leave out such a nice piece of music would they?

I'm getting into the Hoffmeister seriously right now, largely inspired by a record from the Budapest quartet that I found on spotify. If you have a favourite K 499, please let me know.

And my interest in this music generally was revived by the Ebène disc which was released about a year and a half ago. I just love the way they mold the musical lines so as to bring out all the complexities - emotional and musical.

Ditto, and Griller for the Quintets.

I thought that Tatrai in K516 was amazingly good. Has anyone here enjoyed the live records from the Juilliard on Doremi? (Not me) Or the Orlando on Bis? (I like that one a lot)

As you have probably found out, the Petersen quartet only recorded the "Haydn" set and the three "Prussian" quartets (both highly recommended, especially the latter, the former is a little lean and dry IIRC). No K 499. I love the piece, but cannot recommend a separately available recording out of the top of my head. I used to like the ABQ/Teldec, but I "grew" up with this one and I have not really done any comparison. For some reason the piece tends to be not as often recorded as many others.

I've only dabbled in these, but I enjoyed what I heard here:

Love the Petersen in the quartets they recorded, and the Grumiaux Quintets.  Also rather fancy:

Yes well it's a long time since I was exploring the Hoffmeister, but I remember finding quite a few really special ones: The Netherlands Quartet, The Melos Quartet and The Budapest Quartet recording from 1934, The Fine Arts Quartet.

I've had my eye on that one for some time. As far as the Budapest goes, I remember checking out their K499 and thinking that it was very much inferior to the pre war recording.

For the quintets -

(modern)

(period, K515 and 516 only)

For the quartets... embarrassingly this is the only recording I have (don't know if it ever made it to CD—their later recording did, but Claus Adam >>>>>>> Joel Krosnick 4eva) but it's a good one.

I haven't formed an opinion on the quintets yet, but the Mosaiques' quartets (Haydn and Prussian) are pretty much perfect.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but did the Emerson SQ also skip K 499?  They did the "Haydn" set in the late 80's/early 90's, and they did the "Prussian" set 3-4 years ago.
