A gift from my wife: Alain Planès' Debussy

I hadn't heard anything by this pianist before and I was a bit sceptical at the beginning, but now I'm convinced. It is very good indeed.

Building my DSCH symphony collection with a few I hadn't heard until a few days ago. Both are very powerful, very well played, and both interpretations offer something unique.
More purchases on the horizon as I'm getting bit by the DSCH symphony bug.

This order of Temirkanov's DSCH 13th was cancelled from the third party I ordered from, but I was able to find the box set from RCA at ArkivMusic, and for a real good price...

That recording of the Leningrad was the account which sold me on the piece.  I find the Fifth and Sixth especially vibrant, as well.

Good morning, Karl my friend! Good news on the rest of the set! I've found Temirkanov to be quite convincing in almost every recording I've heard. This set was only $22.99 regular price at ArkivMusic.

Wise lady!

He is very good, indeed. Gifted and extremely meticulous. Some people criticize him for being a bit distant or intellectual; but I disagree.  :)

I don't know...I find him a real bore, you would think the Russian combination of orchestra and conductor would be a match made in heaven but they are rather ordinary middle of the road readings. The reading of the Leningrad is pretty good but nowhere as well-done as Jansons with the same orchestra.

The Devil made me do it  >:D (you know who you are ). Joke apart, I have a disc of symphonies by Frankel and find his music rather forbidding. Maybe this will give me a different experience.

Hi GioCar - I'm not too big on that Planès set, but then most of the time Debussy's piano music doesn't really work that well for me (yet - I keep trying).

But one disc that I find excellent is Planès' set of piano solo music by Janácek!

Latest purchase:

I had my eye on this set since last year so thought I'd go for it.
Most all of his important Operas  are represented so there's a lot to explore - looking forward to this one.

HaHa  >:D

Actually the end of the 'Curse of the Werewolf' Suite has a kind of 'doomed processional' which I found rather moving and played repeatedly. It reminded me of 'Odd Man Out' by William Alwyn which is one of my favourite film scores. Furthermore, the other film scores on the Frankel CD have some nice lyrical passages. I have to say that this is my favourite Frankel CD. I have a couple of the symphonies, the Violin Concerto commemorating the Holocaust and the 'Battle of the Bulge' film score. I must check but I think that my older brother was friends with Frankel's step-son at school and, one day going round to tea at his friend's house was introduced to 'Ben' a rather serious man sitting quietly in the room.

An interesting juxtaposition of CDs  8)

Bartók & Kodály

Yesterday I wanted to listen to the concerto for orchestra and I did not have a recording.I'm still building up my collection after selling most of my LP's a few years ago.Another hole is filled. :)
The two piano concertos, the violin concertos , The Miraculous Mandarin,  Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta I have already but this box is still attractive enough to purchase.
