The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

-- William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

Brillant orchestration. Hétu might appeal to those who like Braga Santos (Bartok, Martinu...) et.al.

The Saint-Maurice is a Québec river that saw the birth of the first industrial establishment in Canada in 1730, a forge and foundry (hence the brass and bells/anvils at the beginning). Later on it became a major waterway for wood floating, the timber being floated down to Trois-Rivières, a city that for decades was the largest newsprint supplier in the world. Incidentally, Trois-Rivières was Hétu’s birthplace. It’s that heritage that Is evoked in that nice piece (thanks for that link, btw  :)).

Hétu studied under Dutilleux and Messiaen. His music is accessible, not ‘modern’ in the spiky, arid, abstruse sense. It should have broad appeal IMO. I particularly like his fine 5th symphony.

Naturally, my eyes lit up at the sight of a Braga Santos comparison! ;) I recall listening to some of Hétu's works a while ago and found them rather akin to Bartok and Martinu, as you mention, but not particularly Braga Santos. Do you mean "early" or "late" Braga Santos?

More Joseph Jongen coming my way (ordered from jpc):

And this  CD of chamber music by the (very obscure—I haven’t been able to locate any mention of him here on GMG) Landais composer René de Castéra (1873-1955). I got to him because another CD in the same series includes performances by the “Ensemble Joseph Jongen”  ;):

Quite conservative Schola Cantorum stuff, but the audio snippets sounded rather appealing to me (with a certain charme désuet).

I have another disc of Tamberg’s music on the same label (listening to it as I write). Worth exploring further, I say.

For the Caplet pieces.

That looks interesting, André. I didn’t know of the existence of that CD.

I confess I’m ambivalent about Caplet. My first exposure to him—many years ago—was a Harmonia Mandi CD with the Conte fantastique, the Septuor and Les prières, and was favourably impressed. But then I got Le miroir de Jésus (on Marco Polo), and found the piece downright unpleasant. These orchestral works you’ve just purchased may help me reevaluate this composer.

I've been interested in this cycle for a while, and I chanced upon this disc in my local record shop yesterday. Grabbed it immediately.

I generally like Turnage’s works (Greek, Blood on the Floor, Three Screaming Popes). One could say that he has now become part of the musical establishment. These are recent compositions from his London Philharmonic Composer in Residence stint.
