A cute slab of "exotica" from 1960, with a very strong bassist (Victor Sproles) to make up for some of the deficiencies ... it's nice, don't get me wrong, but it's more Tristano than anything Eastern ... (unless that is referring to the US east coast, who knows)

In an unbearably hot summer evening in Madrid, some very cool music:

Aye, I thought I knew that face!

Knowing the face will not do - gotta know the movie!

Some recently played ones:

Hardman didn't have many chances to really shine, and he makes very good use of it on his Savoy album ... there's a jazz messengers mood to it and he seems to channel his successor in that group, Lee Morgan, here and there, but this does not diminish the fun a bit. Sonny Red is a musician I'm quite ambiguous about, but I love his Chicago album (Red-Jordan-Timmons, with Wilbur Ware and Dannie Richmond completing the line-up) as well as his seventies album on Mainstream (currently available in Japan, carpe diem!) - anyway, Red is excellent here as well, and so is pianist Ronnie Mathews, who really would deserve to be much better known!

The Mastersounds disc has the group without their most famous sidekick, brother Wes Montgomery on guitar ... this is a fine, groovy, tightly-knit band, the album far from being a masterpieces, but nonetheless quite enjoyable. Monk Montgomery's electric bass gives it a sound that's very different from MJQ, which is a whole different animal anyway, although they share their instrumentation.

Ooh, big goof: that's JENKINS-Jordan-Timmons of course .... Jenkins as in John, another of those so-so post Parker alto players of the fifties ... like him rather less than Red but his Savoy album is very much alright, while I've always foubd his one on Blue Note (co-led with Kenny Burrell no less) a bit of a let-down. Time to revisit ...

George Shearing - Rare Form (1966)
Chet Atkins - After The Riot At Newport (1960)

^a couple of Gary Burton sideman dates I hadn't heard before, and both a lot of fun

Denny Zeitlin - Live At The Trident (1965)
Charlie Haden and Jim Hall - s/t (1990)

best listen yet to the Haden / Hall concert album, which I think is a quiet masterpiece

Played these two in the morning:

The Garrick is lovely and indeed has an enormous charm! With Rendell, Carr and Jim Philip, there's three excellent winds players, and with Coleridge Goode and Trevor Tomkins an excellent rhythm section. This is a BBC session from 1969, Garrick himself can be heard on acoustic and electric, harpsichord and celesta. The Jazz Couriers is an ok-sounding live recording, Tubbs switches to vibes at one time, and him and co-leader Ronnie Scott have a solid rhythm section to back them up.
