Duke Ellington - Such Sweet Thunder

haven't played this in a long while, but the Murakami book I just finished makes multiple mentions of "Star Crossed Lovers"

I have never listened to it!  So, I found it on YouTube and am rectifying that gap in my Ellington history.

Yeah, I saw your post in the book thread - cool. Ellington/Such Sweet Thunder is circa late 1950s or something, but IMO it's timeless. Chances are that Hodges alone is going to rock your boat.

Interesting suite.  More Strayhorn than Ellington, and somewhat episodic without extended playing of what was a great band.  I am glad to have heard it but I doubt I'll repeat the experience.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention, though.

Yeah - although its praised by some critics its an album I seldom feel the need to revisit, though I have nothing against it.

First spin and really enjoying this. I have a few of her other albums, which I also enjoy.

Not sure what possessed me to listen to this record, it is not the kind of Jazz I usually put on.  But back in the '70s I was a fan and I suppose I wanted to revisit the music if only to see if there was any vestige left of my former affection.
