OK....now time to grab the live artillery, buddy.  Three musts:

and if you can swing it, this is a must.  Paid $100 for mine (8 cds) with a scratched up outside slip case, but still worth every "nickel"!

[asin]B000002B01[/asin]

Reminds me that it is time to grab another set that I need.....

Thanks, I have seen you guys raving about that one for awhile now. I'll keep an eye out in the used bins or perhaps for a budget reissue.

I actually have a two disc compilation from that set that a friend copied for me from the Complete Columbia Album Collection. Will check that out once I finish the above Perfect Collection Box.

I like what one amazon reviewer says:

QuoteGo without espresso for a month. Pack your own sandwich, make your own soup. have your kid pay his/her own tuition. Save your money anyway you wish but buy this set. This is such an extraordinary document of one of the very greatest groups in all of music one would be remiss in not including it in one's collection.

Now, for something completely weird....

I've been a HUGE fan of Pink Floyd since Jr High school. This is the last album of theirs (minus the soundtracks) that I picked up.

Yet another "new to me" amazing Miles CD from the above box. Diggin' Tony Williams work on this one.

Question about the box contents: do they include any extra material, or are they just the recordings as originally issued?

Question arose in my mind when I got Sketches of Spain this afternoon at Barnes and Noble (in the $7.99 rack) in a version that contains what are labeled as three bonus tracks (and looking for it on Amazon now, I see there are issues of SoS with as much as an entire second CD of extra material).

I've got Jarrett playing Bach and Handel, but this is the first time I'm hearing him play jazz.

Yes, most of them have bonus tracks:

1958 Miles, Kind Of Blue, Miles in Berlin, Filles, Bitches - 1 Bonus track each
Porgy, Seven Steps to Heaven, Someday My Prince Will Come - 2 Bonus Tracks each
Sketches of Spain, We Want Miles - 3 Bonus Tracks each
Miles Ahead, Nefertiti, 'Round About Midnight - 4 bonus tracks each

I will add that Bitches is the original mix, in the best mastering available, previously only available as a Japan import and even then without the bonus track.

I like this set so much that I regret not getting the complete Columbia recordings when it was reasonably priced over at amazon. Great performances and sound!

Bolded the ones I have as individual CDs.  Except for 1958 Miles--my copy has no extra tracks-- and Kind of Blue--which I have as a 2CD issue with numerous extra tracks--the number of extras matches what I have

Guess my next step in Miles collecting is track down that Japanese import!

Four great albums from two recording sessions due to a little contractual agreement.  +1 for the lawyers.

Two from 'Trane today:

From 1957 with Garland, Chambers and others.

and from '61, with Garland, Taylor and Chambers

Funny, George and others.  I started with Miles and then moved naturally into 'Trane's run.  After the dust settled from the two, I found that I gravitate more toward 'Trane's music at this point, so long as we do not get too "late" with either.  I believe Armstrong, Brubeck, and Getz are right there as well, but 'Trane ....damn.  Guess that makes more than a Rushmore, but those are probably my favorite five.

From '68....pushes my Miles limiits....though there are spots throughout his later works that intrigue me, like  Miles Runs The Voodoo Down from BB.

Have you given Tribute to Jack Johnson a try?  The rock leaning might appeal to you.

And thanks for posting that link to the latest volume in the Bootleg series HIPster.  I know this latest only brings it up to the 3rd volume, but my feeling is it looks like these volumes will turn out to be automatic purchases for me.

I think it's really something nice how Legacy is treating his catalog and giving the fans some excellent music in terrific packages.
