Favourite albums of 2017? (Non-classical)
« on: December 13, 2017, 06:30:25 AM »
Two rules here:

1. Non-classical only. Classical recordings are being dealt with in the main forum.

2. This is not the place to criticize other people's choices.

Kesha - Rainbow

- Grammy Nomination for the best pop vocal album of 2017
- Billboard named Rainbow 16th Best Album of 2017
- Rolling Stone names Rainbow second best pop album of 2017
- TIME ranks Rainbow as 7th best album of 2017
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

So...no one here listens to rock/metal/pop/jazz? Strange, considering there's a non-classical WAYLT thread here...

It's a simple question, for goodness' sake!

I'll go with mine then. Steven Wilson's To the Bone. A great big "IN YOUR FACE!!!" to those who think that good pop music is somehow a lower art form than, say, the progressive rock tag that Mr. Wilson is often aligned with. He pulled off an absolute CORKER of an album here in the great tradition of sophisticated smart prog-pop albums of the 80s by the likes of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel and Tears for Fears.

Algiers: The Underside of Power
If you have a chance to see these guys live, don't hesitate one bit. The album is phenomenal, but their live show operates on a whole new level.

Mount Eerie: A Crow Looked at Me
A very personal choice. The music does almost nothing for me, the lyrics.. a lot.

Converge: The Dusk in Us
Again they tower over the rest of the HC / metal genre.

Les Filles de Illighadad: Eghass Malan
You don't have to be a world music aficionado to appreciate this. One of my favourite current bands.

St. Vincent: MASSEDUCTION
Her best yet. Can't get enough of her guitar playing.

Vložte kočku: Klub Bublinka
One of the most original and entertaining Czech bands, no need to know the language, as they keep it pretty abstract most of the time. The following song didn't end up on the album but it captures their essence wonderfully.

I've bought some non-classical albums this year, but none that have been released this year...

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."
