David,
Watched District 9.....still not sure what to think.  I will give them credit for trying something new, but got a bit too Mad Maxish for me in parts, which works if you are watching, well, Mad Max. ;)

Glad you enjoyed Hurt Locker as well....including the ending. ;D

Glad to read your thoughts on Hurt Locker, Bill. I'm a sucker for "cyclical" endings like that, which lead us back to the beginning... and have been since the Looney Tunes cartoon with the singing frog!

By the way, we have nearly-identical post counts!

Not the last film I watched (that would be The Dark Knight) but films I'll be watching soon:

Both boxes were incredibly cheap from Amazon UK: 12 DVDs, total price 28 Euro. I'm especially looking forward to Tous les matins du monde, a film about Baroque composers Sainte Colombe and Marais that Antoine recommended. The Rohmer box includes all six of his Comedies and Proverbs and the last of his morality tales, L'amour l'après-midi (Chloe in the Afternoon, the US title).

Edit: Just noticed that Dave has also recommended Tous les matins du monde. I chose wisely  ;D

I had the same reaction to the ending, Brian. Saw it for the first time today. :) On the whole, I liked the film.

I should watch the whole thing through, to do it justice.  I've seen patches, which did not sing to me;  but of course, that is unreliable . . . .

Which it is only relatively recently that we have seen!  One Froggy Evening is brilliant.

What did you think of it?

Like Casino Royale, a return to roots and realism, I loved The Dark Knight for being so deadly serious and un-cartoonish. What bothered me were some events that were illogical (I mean illogical in the Bat-world  ;D ). For example, Batman thinks nothing of using the weapons on this bat-cycle to destroy public and private property on his way to the crime scene but when he gets the Joker in his sights, he doesn't fire and then he swerves away at the last second, consequently wiping out and becoming a sitting duck for Joker. Why did he do that? In the final confrontation, Batman has no trouble defeating an entire swat team but Joker wins the hand-to-hand fight. Really??? Joker beats up Batman? Amazingly silly  ;D  Still, great film overall.

Hi, Sarge. I don't know if has been commented here, but the great Eric Rohmer (Maurice Henri Joseph Schérer) died less than one month ago in Paris (January 11)... May he rest in peace.

The news of his death is what inspired me to add more of his films to my DVD collection.

I think that my biggest problem in terms of logic is that the Joker presents himself as an agent of chaos, yet all of his actions follow a carefully logically drawn out plan. :D  Also a problem with both Dark Knight and Batman Begins is that there is too much telling, not enough showing.  It's as if they have to externalize all of their thoughts, because we the audience are too stupid to figure it out from context. ::)

Still love it, great movie. :)

That's the damn problem with chaos: in order to make it work, you have to have a plan.

I didn't notice that. But then I prefer talk to action. You notice I just bought eight Eric Rohmer films: all talk, no action  ;D

Tous les Matins du Monde (1991) w/ Gérard Depardieu & Jean-Pierre Marielle, as Marian Marais & Saint Colombe, respectively - English subtitles - Jordi Savall the musical director on the film - we both watch the movie and enjoyed the scenery and of course the music - viol heaven!  :D

I did like the movie, though I would have liked to see Ste. Colombe smile ONCE in it. It's apparently hard to tell how much of the film is historically accurate, since little is known of the life of Ste. Colombe, even his first name, which is why he is often referred to as "Sieur." There is no sign of a "fils" in the film. Guillaume Depardieu, who played his father as a young man, was handsome (oh, and also a good actor). Unfortunately he died of pneumonia in 10/08, estranged from his father.  (It's amazing what info is on the Internet ;-)

Another Teaching Company DVD course: World Literature. Goes from Gilgamesh to Salman Rushdie and includes Eastern as well as Western literature. Professor is excellent. Wish I could ask questions, though.

"THE STRANGER", Orson Welles

I had never seen this movie, and, to be honest, I was not very impressed. Everything is too conventional, except for the inspired details regarding the clocks.
Even the actors - Welles included - disappointed me. The exception was Robinson, as a cold and not very ethical investigator.
