I'll have to listen to that soundtrack again. I've always liked it.

Lemme say that I enjoyed the movie including the soundtrack.  But it's become a period piece.

I recently acquired the soundtrack and found I was disappointed by the stand-alone music.  Maybe it was the state of technolgy at the time, but the synthesizer renditions come across today as murky caricatures of the real music.

I recently acquired the soundtrack and found I was disappointed by the music standing by itself.  Maybe it was the state of technolgy at the time, but the synthesizer renditions come across today as murky caricatures of the real thing.

It was pretty much my intro into the classical music world, so I probably have a soft spot for it.

Finally found a decent-quality torrent for this:

I've given up hope of finding a similarly-decent rip of Four Nights of a Dreamer, which seems to have dropped off the face of the Earth, a fact which shows how little respect film gets as a serious art form. The loss is in my opinion similar to, say, a Guernica or a Les Noces simply disappearing.

I can find you links for decent looking VHS rip, well as decent as VHS rip goes.

Brilliant. Even with the VHS-quality video, this is Bresson's most visually beautiful film — and Dominique Sanda is mesmerizing.

I'm in the middle of getting what I think is the only version floating around online. From what I've heard, the quality is pretty bad, but when it comes down to either seeing it or not seeing it the choice is obvious.

Much better than the 28% it got from Rotten Tomatoes.

I won't say anything about it because I don't want to spoil it for folks.

I know of two rips floating around. Both are sourced from same NewYorker VHS release but one is about 400 MB and looks piss poor, the other is about 900 MB and looking far better (as possible from VHS).

I don't watch much TV but I really enjoy this sitcom. We've watched season one on DVD and now are on season two, and the third season is currently being televised. It never fails to cheer me up.

My thoughts exactly - although last time I saw it must have been over 25 years ago  ::). Bresson once again turned to Dostoievsky for his subject. Pacing, lighting, acting are quite extraordinary. I don't think I've ever seen a more enigmatic feminine figure than Sanda. Mesmerizing is very appropriate in her case. I do remember that everything is suggested, never acted out, let alone explained. Very elliptical.

That's a bloody marvelous film, and I saw it already many times. It doesn't loose any of its magic.

I think you should rent another Mike Leigh film - Naked, watch them both as double bill, and then come back and tell us what you think.

Yeah, the banning did take up a lot of my time. But now with the new forum everything is automated, so I can take a little time off once and again, while the computer does the banning for me.

I actually liked the film quite a bit, even though I found it extremely uneven. The first 15-20 minutes were unbearably bland, and seemed to go on forever, and I was going to turn it off and watch something else a couple of times. But I persevered. 0:) It got much better in the middle section and then something went wrong again towards the very, very end, when again it became completely uninteresting. But I think it's well worth watching for two scenes: the absolutely brilliant scene with the (homeless?) madman and the excellent flamenco lesson (this latter one is in a completely different category, of course). The driving lessons are not bad either (they are what made me continue watching the movie), but the political angle and the cheap psychology does give them a slightly banal ring. Still, they're great fun, and I can't imagine them done any better in terms of acting. Speaking of which, there's generally lots of first rate acting in the movie. One of the very rare cases where I can't think of someone ruining a scene by their acting - from lead roles to supporting cast, everyone does good work (some are excellent, some are just good, but nobody ruins anything).

Agree on most you said, though getting bored after 15 minutes? Really? You have attention span of ferret on acid. Avoid Tarr's Satantango. You'd might shoot yourself, first 15 minutes takes some cows to pass through shot.
Extremely uneven seems bit hard, film has kind of vignettish structure (unwanted?) and some of them come off better than others. I thought visit to sister was the most cliché ridden part (though brother-in-law was priceless), and some of the driving lessons too, and bookstore opening was too long for a just being a cue for losing bike ....
Homeless encounter is indeed brilliant, almost surreal.

And again you're right about acting. Leigh often gets first rate stuff out of his casts.
