OK, this is what I did. Don't anyone get your knickers in a knot yet.

No, they aren't broadcast, they are commercially available recordings.

I cut out those posts and put them away where the board owner can see them.

When he reads them and decides whether to keep them or not, then he will return them or not.

Kindly don't go on posting a lot of these until we get some judgment on it.

That was pretty much (OK, vaguely ) covered at the very beginning:

basically, I'd say: anything that has never been released on CD is more or less safe.

+ There are sites where the copyright owner explicitly allows his copyrighted material to be downloaded.

I've cut out the part about oop CDs but if they are long oop and not easily available used - that falls in the "gray" area we're exploiting too.

My thoughts in the entire ripping subject have been formed by a discussion with a personal friend, a recorded artist. If a CD or DVD is commercially available, ripping, burning etc. is THEFT. - Forgive if I have been through this before, but it needs repeating! - If an artist's agent finally secures a contract with a recording company and they print one thousand copies, but only one hundred get purchased, the remaining nine hundred are a financial loss. When the same artist comes back to the company and asks for production of another one of his performances the company of course points at the stack of unsold discs as an answer. End of one musicians career! The fact that maybe five thousand unauthorised copies have been made does not influence the recording company, or increase the artists income.

Sorry, can't make it any shorter, but that's my thoughts involving ripping. It all comes down to  ethics!

That's an oversimplification. If only 100 discs are purchased record businessmen should ask themselves why that happens. May it be a matter of prices? How much each plastic cd and case cost?
Recording/production fix costs are distributed on the many artists each company has and the various records they make, so we should point to costs not related to the music itself, and artist's share of that benefit.
Microeconomics also teaches us if the prices are lowered they will sell more, provided they want to reduce management fees. I don't think cds are too expensive in the first world, but living in an underdeveloped country I can tell you they are prohibitively expensive here*. What happens here is more inflexibility in terms of demand, at high prices nobody purchases anything, and we substitute that with music downloads. But that means, of course, a trade-off: ripped cds have a short lifespan, no booklet or coverart is included (which means the downloader need to create individual covers for each burnt cd, which eventually inflates the price of downloading music), and not all the recordings are available as downloads.
But there is a price at which going legal is better than copying cds.



*I saw a set with Brahms' complete orchestral works, from DECCA, at $300 (in pesos), in that time the average mid-class wage was $1500 per month, so that costed the 20% of a monthly wage.

Definitely! Average monthly wage over here is €300-400 while single full priced CD in a store is €15. Box sets can go up to 50% of average paycheck.

Er, without wishing to be the party pooper here, how exactly do many of Bonehelm's uploads in recent posts constitute 'broadcast' material? They're clearly rips from commercially available CDs. Unless I'm mistaken?

Just want to make it clear that when I posted the above, I was simply referring to the term 'broadcast' as opposed to recordings which were not, in fact, ever broadcast. I've got no personal interest in whether or not copyright protected content is pirated, here on GMG or elsewhere in cyberspace. Thought I'd better make this plain in case I'm being seen as the 'bad guy' here.

Hi André!

You can listen to samples above - they give a pretty good idea. The Stachowski piece is rather sombre as it is dedicated to the memory of the cellist Leon Solecki. I think Stachowski's brand of "new neo-classicism" comes off best in more energetic pieces but this one has some excellent moments too (it's very short though).

What are the glitches I mention? The sound is fine but a portion of the music is missing - it just suddenly "jumps forward" a couple of seconds (30-60, I suppose - but am not sure).
