Thanks Maciek for those cello files. Also the Piazolla - I have wanted to hear the orchestral versions of these for a while now. The Grand Tango is an arrangement of course (the original being for cello and piano, and Oblivion is also an arrangement).

I'm not sure how well Le Grand Tango works in its orchstral version - just seems too heavy, and the wrong 'feel' for this glorious music. Still enjoyable though. Oblivion is more successful I think, but I still prefer the version I play with cello and piano. I think the Tango's generally work better with smaller groups.

Yes, don't know how I managed to leave this info out (I think I mentioned it when posting these links in the "listening" thread): this version of Le Grand Tango is in Andrzej Bauer's own arrangement. My impression is similar to yours - it doesn't quite work this way. Gubaidulina's violin and piano version (as played by Kremer) is breathtaking though (IMO) - do you know it?

I'm still not sure whose arrangement Oblivion is in here - it was played as an encore after Grand Tango. The ensemble writing here seems to be done with a bit more expertise (IMO), so I was thinking it could be Duczmal's version - her transcriptions are usually peerless.

No I don't know the Gubaidulina arrangement. I love Kremeer's playing though, so it sounds like a winner. I've heard a lot of cellists play this piece, and for me, Carter Brey (principal cellist of the New York Phil.) is easily the finest version available on record. This is a superb CD, and comes coupled with other very beautifully played Tangos and also Ginasteras brilliant cello sonata. Brey premiered the work with the composer and even toured with piazolla in the 80s. He just gets the idiom and feel perfectly, and the playing is perfect.

I just heard them with Levine and the Met Orchestra here, back in May.  Marvelous, and to think that Carter wrote them in his 90s...

To wav and back? No, it shouldn't affect the quality. Thanks for the effort.

You can compress the file with Winrar and split the single audio file in 99mb fragments. Once all the parts are downloaded the file is reconstructed by normal decompression. You can also split the heavy file with Hhsplit (I've been downloading videos of 1,4gb each that way).
