It's remarkable how different lieder sounds like live than in studio. I am used to being yelled at from down a mic :P

Papa
Symphony № 38 in C Major, Echo
Symphony № 39 in g minor
Symphony 'A' in B-flat Major
Symphony 'B' in B-flat Major
Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra
Adám Fischer

There's something about the G minor one... :3

Eric Heidsieck - 24 paraphrases on Rouget de Lisle's "La Marseillaise" in the styles of composers from Bach to Stravinsky.    65 minutes, recorded live in a concert for Radio France Alsace Dec.1988.    A moderately interesting novelty.

Pfitzner, Hans (1869-1949) - String Quartets w/ The Franz Schubert Quartett from the 4-CD CPO box which arrived earlier in the week; although written over a 50+ yr period in his life (from the age of 17 y/o to 1942) these are much more uniform in their composition and sound rather that divisible into stylistic periods - beautiful, melodic chamber music which is well performed by this group and superbly recorded - excellent purchase for me!  :)

Sounds very interesting - never heard this composer, so when I get it (probably the CPO) it'll be on straight away.

Hi John - my first experience(s) w/ Hans Pfitzner - CPO is offering 4-CDs (packaged as 4 single jewel boxes which seems to be their usual practice) at a good price - this afternoon and now listening to the other chamber offerings - he has been discussed in other threads recently - Dave  :D

Tovey Piano Trios on Toccata Classics - Perhaps not compelling music, but it's the next best thing as well as being a mood enhancer.

Some Langgaard to play out this horrible birthday. Who wants to be reminded how old they have gotten? Everybody in my house certainly wishes to press my creeping mortality upon me - and I am still "young", so god knows how much worse this will become in coming years :-X Still, it was an excuse to play music loud without anybody complaining, so I chose the largest sounding pieces I could find :P

From the Kempe I had time for Don Quixote, Don Juan and Macbeth. I have yet to find another recording which handles Don Quixote as well as Kempe. I like to use Variation VII as a microcosmic test of each performances, and so far Kempe and his recording team is the only one that manages to make sense of all the individual lines, which generally turn into horrible smudges of sound. It may not be a particularly accurate representation of how it would sound live, but nothing beats it for impact.

Actually, ditching friends to listen to Strauss at high volume, maybe I am getting old :'(

Mozart: Violin Sonata in B-flat, KV 378;    Violin Sonata in G, KV 379;    Violin Sonata in E-flat, KV 380;    Violin Sonata in B-flat, KV 454
Henryk Szeryng, violin;   Ingrid Haebler, piano
PHILIPS (CD #1 of 2)

Surprisingly, greatly enjoying these beautifully played sonatas after dinner this evening;  I'm usually not much of a Mozart man.  Will probably watch the Opening Ceremonies from Vancouver since Jeopardy! is pre-empted for it.  :P

This recording single-handedly changed this symphony from being my least favourite from RVW to one of my favourites :-\

This set is on my shopping list.  While I am no major fan of Mahler music but I have always enjoyed recordings by the late Klaus Tennstedt and heard good things about this set ...

The Eliahu Inbal take on Mahler in this set is amazing.  He is the only conductor who can make an entire symphony into a communicating musical narrative.  YOU ARE IN FOR A REAL TREAT.

Thread Duty:

Pickard
Plenty of legendary and wartime thumping and clattering.
Nice.
