Sigismondo D'India.
Secular Vocal Music.
Duets from Le Musiche Books I. (1609) and II (1615)

Matelda Viola and Paolo Rochetti, Sopranos.
Giovanni Caruso, Theorbe.
Gino Nappo, Harpsichord.
Luigi Polsini, Bass and Soprano viola da Gamba.
Margaretha Thyssen, Soprano viola da Gamba.
Olga Ercoli, Triple Harp.
Played on period instruments.

Licensed by Tactus. 3 cd's. Recording dates, 1990, 1998, 2003.

Another compilation from the quality label Tactus, released by Brilliant. This recording made in 2003, is of a extra ordinary quality. In fact I play this cd over and over again, and cannot get enough from it. Both sopranos are heavenly, and they sing so in style, without a harsh tone whatshowever, and like two heavenly angels, come down to please our ears. The nectar flowing from their voices is remarkable soothing for a stressed mind, and gives solace the moment you hear it. The instrumentalists are topnotch, and give excellent support throughout. Recording is up to the usual excellent standards from this label. And to think many recordings from this label are going to be released on Brilliant in the near future. The price is no brainer, 14,- euro's.

Sigismond D'India.
Madrigals, Arias, and Dances.
Cori di Marinari nella favolo d' Arione.
Ensemble "Elyma"/Gabriel Garrido.

Maria Cristina Kiehr, Nadia Ragni, Sopranos.
Claudio Cavina, Countertenor.
Pietro Valguarnera, Tenor.
Josep Cabre, Bariton.
Daniele Carnovich, Bass.

Played on period instruments.

Licensed from Tactus. Recording 1999. CD II.

The second disc from this box, and ever so successfull as the first disc, with beautiful singing, and excellent instrumentalists.
Kiehr is in good form here, but frankly no one sets a foot wrong. Old friends like Cavina, and Cabre, make a very good impression after so many years of singing. A fine balance, and perfect recording crowns off this CD.

That explains why I had not seen it before!  ;D
The Tactus catalogue is a goldmine for Italian early music and baroque - all HIP. I'm happy to see that Brilliant is reissuing at a steady pace. Let's hope that they'll pick up the Arcana catalogue as well - have you by any chance heard something about that?

And: have you previously picked up this issue as well?

Q

PS Are there texts with that D'India issue?

There is still legal fighting about the rights, and a few bidders on the market, and financial things are not yet sorted out, alas. So Arcana issues on Brilliant in the near future.......As soon as I have more info about this I let you know.
The Oratorio disc I haven't seen before. Do you have it, and what is the quality? Tactus recordings?
The India discs has texts, but only in Italian.

All is well Harry.  My wife was wondering if there is some way to link up with what you and Que have been playing lately in such a manner that it can be piped into our home.

Sigismondo D'India.
Music for the single voice, fifth book, Venice 1623.
Maurizia Barazzoni, Soprano.
Sandro Volta, Arch Lute, Chitarrone, five course guitar.
Played on period instruments.

Licensed from Tactus, and recorded in 1998.

The last cd in this box, and quite acceptable. I think this soprano has a bit to much unevenness in her voice, wobbly sometimes, and to much volume and vibrato, than is good for the music. But she brings over the message most of the time, in a very dark voice I must add, for a soprano. The music is just fine, and the recording up to scratch.

Haven't heard it, hoped you had! :) Seems nice though, indeed from Tactus.

At least that's something. I think I'd manage with my Italian dictionary at hand. ;D

Joseph Haydn.
SQ opus 1, 1-4.
Buchberger Quartet.

The 6th Volume allready containing the opus 1 and 2 quartets!
The first four all in major keys, are a a bunch of enthusiastic and life affirming quartets. They have a lightness and swiftness quite catching, and invigorating for the soul. They are played in a very genial way, with well judged tempi, and a propulsive drive. It has the openness of tone of a HIP performance, and they are very concentrated to give a lucid and open approach, so that you can clearly see in the kitchen, and even sniff the ingredients. The recording is direct and pleasing to the ear. The Adagio of the first quartet is set in motion in a very mystical way, and runs on the melody of the first Violin into harmony with the Viola, really beautiful...

Handel.
Opera Arias.
Arias and duets from the era of "The Rival Queen", from Alesssandro, Admeto, Riccardo primo, Siroe and Tolomeo.

Dame Emma Kirkby and Catherine Bott, Sopranos.
The Brandenburg Consort/Roy Goodman.

For me this 3 far box is a absolutely smashing experience on all counts.
This is the way I like to hear Handel's operas, and opera in general.
Fine sound and excellent recording and performance.
More of this please.

Continuing w/ the recent arrival of my clearance CD order from Arkiv Music on Hungaroton:

Benda, Georg (1722-1795) - Keyboard Sonatas w/ Andras Szepes on a harpsichord built by Kovats & Szabo in 1998 after Albert Delin's 18th century instrument.  Benda was a Czech muscian/composer who worked mainly in Austria & Germany; CPE Bach was a major influence.

de la Guerre, Elisabeth (1664-1729) - Pieces de Clavecin w/ Szilvia Elek on the harpsichord (instrument built by William Dowd in Paris, 1972; assume after one from the period?) - Elisabeth Jacquet who married an organist named de la Guerre was a child prodigy, who was taken into the court of Louis XIV under his personal supervision & that of his mistress, Mme. de Montespan - apparently Elisabeth was outstanding on the harpsichord & a phenomenal improvisor - the works on this disc were published around 1687 and consist of Suites w/ multiple dance movements - quite delightful & superbly played; I really loved the sound of this particular harpsichord.
