Haydn, Joseph - String Quartets, Op. 76 - still making my way through the Buchberger Quartet box and nearing the final discs - I've found this an excellent valued set; my 'comparison' recording this time is Quatuor Mosaiques; in this process, I've 'culled out' some other performances, replaced w/ a dozen discs of the Quatuor Festetics, and decided to keep the Nomos Quartett in the Op. 50 works; so except for the pre-Op. 9 'early' compositions, now have duplicated recordings and groups that I do indeed enjoy, although there is SO MUCH available!  :)

I must be an alien, then. The 16th is one of my favourite Langgaard symphonies. It contains in its very compact size the sort of movements he liked to write - heroic, melancholy, weird... I don't look for a progression, or story, although the final bars sound to me like a defiant and triumphant farewell. They remind me of the final peroration of Brian's 30th symphony, they stride just as purposefully. Stupel is electrifying here, Dausgaard is too matter-of-fact. I always play that last movement when I want to be in a certain 'visionary' mood for my writing...

I still have to get into Langgaard symphonies.  Maybe I should just go for the whole box.

Opus 76 no. 2 in d-minor ("Quinten") has always been a favourite of mine. Especially love the Witches Menuetto!
