Title: Titles of the books you could (or might) write
Post by: owlice on May 31, 2009, 10:03:18 AM
Someday, I may sit down to write a couple of books; I have the titles, and I think it would be a shame not to have actual books to go with them.

The first would be called "Death by Pyracantha" and will be about raising my tall child and the trip through special ed, giftedness, and so on. The title of the book comes from something he said when he was six; distraught over something (nothing, really, except to him), he told me he was going to throw himself out his bedroom window because he deserved death by pyracantha, a very large, very thorny pyracantha being under that window. (I could not help but laugh; what six-year-old thinks of such a thing? I thought it very clever, though of course distressing, too, as he was so distraught at the time. My laughter and subsequent comments broke the downward spiral he was caught in and helped him climb out of the pit.)

The second would be called "Appropriate Paranoia," which is a comment my supervisor's supervisor made when we were talking about public schools in my district. I'm not sure whether this book would be a continuation of the first book or something completely different; I just like the title and want to use it!

And you? What book titles for your own writings do you have lurking in your head?

I've had in mind a title for a book on English grammar and usage and common errors in same for some time.  Its to be called THE TRUE FACTS OF PAST HISTORY AND OTHER REPETITIVE REDUNDANCIES.  I don't know why people need to say things twice.  "United Auto Workers Union" is a phrase I have heard often in recent weeks from talking heads.  Hey, folks, if its got the word "United" at the front, it means its a union.  You don't need to say it again.  Another one is Rio Grande River.  Rio is Spanish for river, and putting the word river at the end suggests that the speaker thinks its not really officially a river until you've said it in English.

At the other end, you have "burrito grande."  -ito is a diminutive suffix in Spanish, and if its "grande," its a burro, not a burrito.

I have in my head the books, but not the titles, at least not for all of them. :)
Those with titles are "The Diesel Sonata" and "The King of Solitude".

I would probably take a look at this book. I hope you write it.

I didn't know you were published. I didn't even know you were a writer. Goody.  ;D

Titles are difficult sometimes. I finished the first draft of a short novella yesterday with the working title THE OUTSIDER TRIO. But I'm going to change it.

I don't necessarily consider myself a writer. I was a oft-published poet in my early years, when I was in my late teens and early 20's, and was for a few years quite famous in China for it. I continue to write poetry but dislike publishing it.

Now I am primarily known as a psychologists, so publishers keep bugging me about writing bestsellers. So I wrote one (the one on men) that was on the bestseller list. Now a second is to be out soon. The third one which I will start writing next week is a book intended for cancer patients (and other people suffering from terminal illness) and their family and friends.

The autobiographical book is for my own use, although publishers have enquired about it. I will write another book on my grandfather, who left China as a 14 year old orphan and fought in WWI in the German airforce, was captured by the Russians after being shot down, and came back to China some years later to become the father of the Chinese air force. He fought in WWII leading the Chinese Air Force against the Japanese. He died in 1952. His life is unreal. Unfortunately there is little information I can find about him and I will need to go to Germany and Russian to do some investigative work in order to write the book.

Tell me more about detoxing the mind. I use Buddhism for that.  ;D

Well, you are using a good tool for that. Bach could be another!

The book is in Chinese. Maybe when I have time I can post a few of the chapter titles.

A bit of grave digging here, but I find this topic to be quite up my alley.

Here's a few I've been noodling about:

The Same and The Other (modeled sort of after Parmenides)
Burr (modeled sort of after Beckett)
MME (modeled sort of after novels of manners)

I can't recall the rest, but I'm sure they'll com back to me in time.
