Surprisingly good, indeed. Honeck really is an excellent conductor and I never really paid him much attention prior to this recording. His new recording of Martinu's

Can anyone explain to me what others hear in Jennifer Higdon's music? It sounds completely empty to me, using the rhetoric of music without the content.
Congratulations to Barbara Hannigan, though; I haven't heard her latest disc, but she has been doing fantastic work over the last few years.

I like the chamber music a lot more than the orchestral. The orchestral often has a Hollywood soft gauze glow, while the conversational push-and-pull of chamber music is something she seems to respond well to. Check out the Lark Quartet's CD on Bridge Records.

I still don't hear anything besides a collection of gestures. Where's the motivation, the throughline? What's animating the music and driving it forwards?

Perhaps it's just not for you? No need in trying to understand something that doesn't please you. FWIW, I don't like Higdon's music at all. I pretty much feel the same way you do.

It's okay, there's a lot of folks who don't like either composer. If you don't like Shostakovich's 5th, then there's really no need to buy the recording since Barber's
Adagio for Strings isn't a long work. Your money is better spent on composers whose music you actually enjoy.

Adagio is nice enough, but I'm still not wholly convinced and haven't been convinced with any other performance other than Thomas Schippers' classic account. The Schippers remains my reference.

Thomas Schippers! Wow! I remember hearing some of his concerts when he led the Cincinnati Symphony!
He was another victim of lung cancer: only 47 when he died!

On the contrary, it's all the more reason for me to wish to understand why others find it appealing. If I discarded everything that I found unpalatable at first hearing, I would never have come to appreciate many things that I love.

But how often has someone given you ample reason to check out a composer and listen with a different set of ears only for you to find yourself in the same predicament time and time again?
For me, it's more of a personal thing and no one can really help me understand a composer whose music I just don't connect to. No amount of convincing simply won't work if you're not attuned to the musical language.

Yesterday I was at the Nashville Symphony for an afternoon concert with the orchestra's strings and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. Right after intermission, before they begun the second half of the program Salerno-Sonnenberg announced to the audience that N.S. had just won 2 Grammy's. Pretty cool moment.

Very thoughtful of you to give a point of reference. Try Slatkin, Thomas, Bernstein and Bernstein LAPO...not that it's not OK to have the schippers as a reference though. Thanks

Oh, I know Bernstein (both accounts), Alsop, and several others, but, as I said, Schippers is my favorite and, for me, the most impassioned reading of this work I know.

No, but I'm not too worried about it since it's just a rearrangement of
Adagio for Strings. To be honest, while I do love the
Adagio, it's not one of my favorite Barber works and, for me, the popularity of the work does little justice to the other music he wrote.
