Title: Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944)
Post by: kyjo on November 14, 2017, 09:31:08 PM
I was surprised to see no thread for this composer here! Anyway, I'm not very familiar with Chaminade's music (besides her famous Flute Concertino), but my roommate introduced me to her gorgeous and memorable Thème varié (Theme and Variations) for solo piano, which is all too short at just over 4 minutes long. It's been constantly going through my head for the past couple days:

My interest in the rest of Chaminade's output has certainly been piqued - anyone familiar with it? :)

Glad you liked it, Jeffrey, despite its lack of a sense of impending catastrophe and hopeless defiance ;D

1) A famous Concertino for flute and piano that is more than charming

2) A Piano Trio that has been oft recorded

3) A Concerto (Piano or Flute??) that also figures prominently

4) Much miniature Piano Music (that figure prominently on 'Encore' albums)

Conservative yet charming,... Saint-Saens??

Nice listening, zero originality.

Was just listening to another beautiful piano piece by Chaminade, Automne from her 6 Études de concert: https://youtu.be/fc9_XaIWdbA (https://youtu.be/fc9_XaIWdbA)

Chaminade wrote some quite ambitious works - https://www.amazon.co.uk/C%C3%A9cile-Chaminade-Callirho%C3%AB-Symphonique-Concertst%C3%BCck/dp/B0718X447W/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1512665058&sr=1-2&keywords=chaminade+yates - but her once-prosperous family hit hard times and she had to support them by churning out an endless stream of salon pieces - a genre that became unfashionable after WW1.
