I might as well recommend the StumbleUpon (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/138) add-on for Firefox. It's the best for finding random 'interesting' websites.  :)

Link-following on Wikipedia is annoyingly addictive. "Where does this go..." - it goes to random interesting stuff like these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_Dog_affair

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Low-Life_Deeps

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordoba_Fighting_Dog (the first paragraph of the "History" section - surely it was nothing if not successful, despite that rather unfortunate side-effect...)

There was a game people used to play in another forum I visit. A person provides the starting and ending articles in Wikipedia, she having already worked her way through from one to the other. The object of the players is to find that or another path between the two articles. I never played it - I waste enough time getting lost in a dictionary!  ::)

Anyway, here's the link I came here to post: Top 20 Top-10 Lists of 2008 (http://lifehacker.com/5099979/). (Mostly tech-oriented.)

There is a more generic game with WP: click "Random Page", then see how many internal link clicks it takes to reach the page of  Adolf Hitler (the average number on one forum I found seemed to hover between 3 and 8 ).

Let's see...

*Clicks Random Article* Love Field (Disambiguation page) -> Love Field (film) -> Washington, D.C. -> Walter Reed Army Medical Center -> Normandy -> Nazi Germany -> Adolf Hitler

6.

So you have to search for internal links that look like they will eventually lead to Hitler?
Title: Re: The interesting thread
Post by: Diletante on December 09, 2008, 11:01:28 AM
I did two:

Rodney Pocceschi -> Police officer -> Germany -> Adolf Hitler  (3)

Savamala -> Serbia -> Adolf Hitler  (2)  :P

S.E.X. Appeal -> Germany -> Adolf Hitler (2)

Yeah, follow through links in the text of the article you get. This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random) is the link to get a random article.

Sadly most links involve going to the "United States" page.

though I feel cheated because Hitler was mentioned on the Guerrilla warfare page without a link.

Only tangentially, I was reading in a history of the potato, and it seems that at the time when it was first brought over to Europe, the interest was in the foliage and flower, not in the edible tuber . . . .

Glasgow Bus Driver's blog, Sunday Times.

The Driver's diary

Seven minutes break until my last run of the night. Doesn't sound like much, but seven whole minutes sitting at a putrid terminus deep within that dribbling colostomy bag known as Drumchapel was something to be endured rather than enjoyed. I buried my head in the Metro and hoped my presence would go unnoticed.

Knock, knock, knock, went the skinny wee junkie who had slithered up to my door unnoticed. "Orite, pal. I've loast somethin' on wan o' yer buses. Is it orite if ah come oan an' have a wee look fur it?" Ever wanted to pull out your shoe laces and just strangle someone?

"Aye, help yourself," I said with a shiver. And on he came.

He was tiny. A voodoo doll. The Devil's chihuahua. The scabs, scars, wheals and welts on his face were like fungal outgrowths from a dead tree stump.

"What is it we're looking for?" I asked.

"My bail conditions," he said.

"Bail conditions?" I choked.

"Aye, it's just a wee bit o' paper. Ah've got tae huv ma bail conditions oan me at all times. Else the polis could lift us," he said, getting down on his hands and knees.

"What was the offence?" I ventured.

"Eh? Oh, ah got busted under eh misuse o' drugs act," he replied.

The rummaging got louder and the swearing more frequent.

Then there was a "clunk", followed by an odd silence.

The junkie stood up holding a long, black, rectangular object and studied it carefully. What had he found?

"Here, driver!" said the midget. "Want tae buy a snooker cue?"

"But wait a minute. You just found that on my bus," I said.

"Aye."

"Well, don't you think I should hand it in at the depot?"

"F*** off! Finders keepers!"

For what it's worth, when my wife got naturalized, we studied the hell out of this stuff.  In the interview, she was asked the colors of the flag.

I can imagine if it was Rick Perry.  "Red, white, and...... Oops!"

I'm not offended! :D  I just saw the point to what you said.  I would hate to look like a sarcastic, unfeeling jackass on say the Whitney Houston thread just because I didn't really think about the effect of my sig. :)

Done.  Sorry if the image was offensive.  It's a well known internet meme which I thought defused the graphic-ness of the image.  My new avatar is none other than Robert Simpson. :)

Don't worry, I wasn't offended. If anything it reminded me that I really need to add more Cronenberg to my collection. I was unaware of any meme.

EDIT: Re "Scale of universe" - Oh, what a surprise, 4chan is blocked at work.

It's many years since I commuted by peak-hour train, so I don't recall if this innovation was really necessary: "quiet carriages".

Quote. . . rejecting a minimum six weeks paid holiday a year

Now, without at all suggesting that I should object to six weeks paid vacation . . . it almost seems absurd that a month and a half would be the bare minimum for any working nation. Rejecting this does not strike me as at all loopy.

I think the way these things would work out is that permanent public servants get the 6 weeks; in the real world, everyone else gets what their boss can afford to give.

At roughly the same time, John Henry purchases The Boston Globe from The New York Times (for less than the contract of a Major League pitcher, as has been pointed out), and Amazon buys The Washington Post.

Thanks for the corrigendum.  I must even have heard it that way, but wound up (as you note) mis-reporting it.

Historically, most newspapers were family-owned until recently, when the business climate for newspapers turned and large corporations gobbled them up. I guess it's a good thing these two major outlets were purchased by individuals. It's hard to imagine any one person having that much money, though.
