General Classical Music Discussion / Re: David Hurwitz
Last post by Herman - Today at 06:14:14 PM
Quote from: (poco) Sforzando on Today at 12:51:30 PMHerman is exactly right. Hurwitz's biggest flaw is his intolerance of disagreement. There are no true "discussions" on his forum because one can never tell how many dissenting comments have been deleted. At times he'll devote an entire video to ridiculing someone who disagrees with him.

A more secure person would welcome opposing viewpoints, but disagree with Dave and you're on the outs. Example: he was reviewing Levit's recent Mendelssohn disc inspired by the October 7 attacks, but Hurwitz has decided that politics has nothing to do with music (which is of course nonsense), and that if anyone were to make a political point in the comments, they would be banned from his site. He's attacked me a number of times, which is why I no longer participate on his forum.

I wasn't even aware of these things, the deletions and bans. I don't read the comment section to his videos much, since they tend to consist of the usual adulatory and / or emotional tributes that are usual on youtube. I guess he wants it this way. This guy is even sicker than I thought.
what I meant with vehemence etc is the tone of his videos; the screaming anger at musicians who do not do it his way. This is why I rarely watch his stuff.

The Diner / Re: Last Movie You Watched

I was thinking of watching The Last Temptation of Christ tonight, but I'm just home from church  and it's too late for so substantial a movie.

Quote from: DavidW on Today at 01:05:57 PMSuzuki is fairly consistent in his approach to solo keyboard Bach.  I was not wildly surprised by his 1080.  I really like it, but I also like all the solo keyboard Bach he is done that I've listened to.

I think it is definitely worth a listen by streaming if you like Suzuki.  But blind buying a $30 set?  I don't know, for you.  It wouldn't be a blind buy for me because I've already listened.  I'm holding out for a big box of Suzuki Bach solo keyboard (including organ).  Fingers crossed.

For me, a combination of wanting a keyboard recording of BWV 1080 (currently have only an oddball but interesting Italian string quartet release I can't locate right now) plus expanding my collection of harpsichord recordings. $30 is a lot, but after a winter of scrubbing endless planned concerts due to bad weather I have an accumulated entertainment budget.  ;)

I preferred to roll the dice rather than spend endless time hairsplitting over reviews. Did enough comparative online listening to figure I can't go far wrong. And I'll likely survey a variety of harpsichordists rather than going for a big box. Though I did spring for Hantai's 6-CD Scarlatti set.

The Jazz Lounge / Re: What Jazz are you listenin...

Picked up this 3cd box for pennies not knowing if it duplicated stuff I already had.

Turns out to be recordings made exclusively for radio - "transcriptions" they confusingly call them - unhindered by the time requirements of the standard 78, and quite seperate from his regular studio work for Victor or Columbia.

And fine recordings they are too.

Heh. Well...

In a large number of ways he posts and argues exactly the way a Trump supporter does.

Refusing to consider or ignoring counter viewpoints and continually doubling down on disproven statements is very Trumpy.

Saying we shouldn't believe what we can hear with our own ears is very Trumpy.

Needing to have your unlearned belief accepted as the one truth is very Trumpy.

Lashing out because of your own feelings of insecurity or of being excluded by the "elites" is very Trumpy.

Saying you're being attacked when you're the one being aggressive is very Trumpy.

Fear of the new and shunning of the new is very Trumpy.

The desire to return to a golden age in the past when all was perfect, though not knowing the actual messy history, is very Trumpy.

Quote from: Ganondorf on Today at 03:40:00 AMI read that Zola work some time ago. Zola is a magnificent evocative writer to be sure but I must also say that his male protagonists tend to be swines. If Zola even half-heartedly agrees with the kind of treatment his female characters receive in his books, then he must be the ultimate sexist.
Entirely possible. I would only counter by saying that my impression of the four or five Zola novels I've read is that he tends to give his men enough rope to hang themselves. Without attempting to psychoanalyse someone long dead, it seems to me that Zola doesn't depict characters like Mouret as noble, only as having the cunning to succeed in a society which generally is shown to be rotten and inhospitable.

Quote from: Daverz on Today at 02:22:57 PMI agree that Hurwitz is intolerant of dissent in his comment section (he banned me years ago), but this is a stupid example.  There would be no benefit to anyone in allowing political comments on Israel/Palestine under a music CD review.  It would just turn into a cesspool very quickly.

It was what came to mind as an example of his intolerance of dissent. No reason to throw people off the forum just for bringing it up, and apparently Levit's reason for producing the disc was the war.

And that was a really good nap . . . .
