My picks:
#1 - Borodin
#2 - Tale
#3 - Molinari
#4 - Molinari
Canon - Tale
What say you?
The third is so good, I have not really been able to get into the others. Cut my teeth on Kronos, but would give the nod to the recent Pacifica recording (but not familiar with Molinari)

Kronos is the only set I have. I've also managed to hear a couple of them live.
I rank nos. 2 and 3 highly. 1 is nice but not terribly distinctive. I still can't make head or tail of 4.
I've only heard the Kronos and Molinari for complete sets, and the one quartet from the Pacifica. I prefer the Molinari across the board.

I own this set from Kronos, but also the one from the Molinari Quartet, which I have yet to hear.
Molinari > Tale > Kronos

I have that one too I think, haven't had a solid listen of any Schnittke in ages....I mean, aaaggggeesss ???
His quartets are great fun from what I remember (got a zazziness to it like the Ligeti and Xenakis SQs, but "post"-modern with Beethoven references and all :D ). The third quartet is built up of Grosso Fugue quotes isn't it? I can't remember.
I'll pop one of my Schnittke SQ CDs on this week and find out ;)
I haven't listened to Schnittke's SQs in quite sometime either, so you'll definitely have to shed some light on them for us. I do recall SQ2 being a particular favorite.
No.1: Borodin, for that old fashioned feeling.
No.2: I have Arditti; they certainly are taut!
No.3: I have the Orlando, the dedicatees,... the correct choice. 0:)
No.4: I have the ABQ, 'live'; how could this be surpassed?
Canon: I have the Hagen and the Ensemble AvantGarde;no comment
I had the Kronos, but the consensus is that they can be bettered in every work. I agree.
I only have the Tale and Kronos sets. I prefer the Tale. But am open to acquiring additional versions; can't have too much Schnittke. He is the man.
