Title: Hogan's Home
Post by: madaboutmahler on December 22, 2011, 01:32:03 PM
Hello,

Please do excuse the not so exciting thread name....

Composing is a passion of mine and it is my ambition to be a composer, as well as a conductor. My first composition attempts were when I was around 11 years old, but I only started passionately composing around two years later, when I composed a variety of works including a cello concerto, an orchestral suite depicting the earth, some piano etudes which were performed by an excellent Japanese pianist and eventually a symphony.
I regard 2011 to have been the most important year for me as a composer so far. It started off by writing an orchestral tone poem based on Robert Browning's poem 'Porphyria's Lover', and then, I recieved my first commission which was from the Misbourne Symphony Orchestra to write a piece for their 50th anniversary season. I wrote for them my 'Rhapsody for Orchestra' which was premiered by the orchestra in the first concert of the season in November. It was such an amazing experience, the first time I had ever heard an orchestra perform my works in concert... and recieving the applause and cheering from the audience was so special!
Also, earlier in the year, I had auditioned to the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music, London, to study composition and piano. I was accepted and started in September. I am really enjoying my time there, my teacher is Matthew Taylor, who some fans of Robert Simpson may have heard of!

Before, my style had been very romantic, but now, in my most recent work called 'Seascapes' for orchestra, I think I have developed a more original, distinct style which is more impressionist.

On this thread, I shall post updates on my compositions for anyone who is interested. I would love your opinions as I value feedback very much!
Here are some links to my work - all are computer sounds I'm afraid. Some live performances, including the premiere of the 'Rhapsody for Orchestra' shall be uploaded soon.

'Seascapes' - an orchestral depiction of the sea. 11 minutes - composed between October and December 2011:

'Rhapsody for Orchestra' - dedicated to Richard Jacklin and the Misbourne Symphony Orchestra. Composed between April and June 2011, premiered on 12th November.

'Romance for Piano' - a solo piano depiction of love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3fTOhlrmhI&feature=related

'Porphyria' - after the poem 'Porphyria's Lover' by Robert Browning. for large orchestra.

Scherzando for Orchestra - dedicated to Mahler (originally from 'Symphony no.1')
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkINjePzYNE&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

Will post more soon! :)

My new projects will include:
A 'reverie' for piano 8-hand - for my chamber group at the Royal Academy
A set of lieder
Violin duets for myself and a excellent violinist friend at school to play, she is only 12 and is already capable of many virtuosic solo concerto parts!
'Nocturnes' for wordless choir and chamber orchestra.

Thank you!
Best Wishes,
Daniel Hogan

Daniel, I just listened to your Seascapes and I'm very impressed with it! I like the direction you're going with your music. Congrats on all of your compositions! I look forward to hearing your music recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra one day. 8)

Just listened to Seascapes.
Very nice! I really enjoyed it.  8) The use of glissandi was also interesting in that context (though in *Sibelius the glissandi sound might not always be as accurate as it should be). I'm assuming the glissandi somehow represented the up-and-down waves of the sea?

*it was Sibelius that you use, right?

I don't know if you showcase your scores to the public or not, but just in case you do, I would be interested in reading them...

Thanks Greg! Yes,the sounds are Sibelius so the glissandi are not the most realistic. I also noticed that at the beggining of a new gliss, Sibelius inserts a tapping sound like a tambourine.... which is not very helpful... Yes, the glissandi represent the up-and-down motion of the waves.
Concerning scores, I might try and upload some to the internet soon, thank you for your interest!

Ah, the Romance for Piano... brings back memories! The pianist Keiko Nishizu in Japan (who also performed my Etudes) is going to be posting a performance of the Romance soon. I shall post it here in this thread once she has uploaded it. :)

I hope I'll be able to play some of your piano works in future too, it would be very nice!

I'm listening to Seascapes just now: it sounds beautiful (the beginning is very melodious and evocative, I love the atmosphere the orchestration creates), but I'll be able to judge it better at the end ;)
I would prefer not to risk passing judgement, but I think this could be definitely one of your best compositions! ;D

Thank you Jeffrey! So glad that you enjoyed it!

Had a wonderful composer moment yesterday evening in which I was lying in bed, and at around 2.00 in the morning, and then suddenly had an idea for the 'Nocturnes' for wordless choir and orchestra. Developed the idea in my mind for a while, and then got too frightened of forgetting the idea so got up, went up to my desk and spent the next half hour sketching out the ideas. Now, I have a sketched score for one of the nocturnes which just needs to be orchestrated! :D

Daniel - caught up with your pieces now, I think !
Liked what I heard originally because, apart from choral works,  could quite easily fill all my playlists/downloads etc. with tone poems/serenades/rhapsodies and the like rather than full symphonies/concerti.
Technical ignorance means I can't begin to understand what merits your compositions have musically, but I can see that with 'Seascapes' you seem to be finding more of your own 'voice', and I needn't have crossed my fingers before listening in the hope I would still like a more 'contemporary' sound (and wouldn't have to fib to you !) because I loved it.
There have been so many variations over the years on a sea/ocean theme - and most are quite delightful;some really moving - but it can't be easy to create a new slant on such a familiar theme while keeping it personal (and a pleasure for the listener !). Think you've certainly done that, & I salute you for it, and look forward to future works.....and Hogan at the Proms !
Happy Christmas, Daniel !                                                                          Clive.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, Ilaria. Thank you - last week, we rehearsed in during our chamber music rehearsal at the academy, it was great fun :) We're going to continue rehearsing it through the term. Maybe there will be a way I can get a recording at the end. :)

Update:
Today, I started working on an exercise my compositon mentor at the Royal Academy JD had set me last week. He told me to write a string quintet allegro, with more shifting harmony. (this is after he heard 'Seascapes' which he said was a very beautiful imaginative piece but he suggested the harmony should shift more often). So, I started writing the exercise and then realized that I was really liking what I was writing. So within an hour, I had completed the piece which is now going to be used as the finale to my new 'String Quintet'. It is a rather bouncy piece full of wit dark humor. It is around 2 minutes, the other movements in the quintet should be around the same duration I imagine. Very pleased with it, was surprised that I could write an allegro again without too much trouble... as the last allegro I wrote was in the Rhapsody for Orchestra, which I wrote last April!
So, will finish the string quintet soon, doing as much composition as possible around the revision for the exams... and after that, shall start on my 'Nocturnes for Wordless Choir and Orchestra' which I am so excited about! The work shall be a dark, haunting, but deeply romantic and optimistic. I'll be setting it in A Major, which may tell you something about the very beautiful, wonderful person I have chosen to dedicate the piece to.... :)

I see you have Bortkiewicz on your 'listening to' list Daniel.  I have his 1 & 2 with the BBCSSO / Brabbins.  I really do like these pieces, and as Bortkiewicz is not, for some reason, a widely touted composer, I was wondering what you have and what you consider is good by him.  I would like to get more Bortkiewicz - any recommendations would be welcome.

Hi John. Yes - I absolutely love Bortkiewicz's music. In fact, he was a main inspiration to me for a while too, when I was composing works in the more romantic style.
He has such a lyrical, poetic, beautiful and exciting style! The two symphonies are excellent works, glad you like them. Another favourite work of mine is his first piano concerto. A piece full of such elegance and delight! The last movement also contains one of the most romantic, beautiful melodies I have ever heard. There is an excellent recording from Coombs and the BBCSSO/Maksymiuk, which really is great. The concerto so deserves more than one recording though... Also, the box of the piano music from Coombs I would also highly recommend, Bortkiewicz certainly wrote some excellent piano music. Here's to more recordings of Bortkiewicz's music! I have been bothering Naxos about it for a while!

Hope this helps, John! Have a nice day!

Just back from the Chesham Arts Festival Composition competition adjudication and am pleased to report that I won it. Was so glad that the adjudicator, Timothy Bowers, seemed to love the works I entered and was very enthusiastic about them! :)

EDIT: was Seascapes and the String Quintet that I entered.

Nice!  :)

Thank you, Greg! :)

Update: Asked Scarlet today whether I could write and dedicate a violin sonata for her, and she said yes.  :) (so, I don't have to do what Vaughan Williams did with his dedication to Sibelius in the 5th symphony... :D ) She is such an amazing violinst who inspires me so much, and I love playing duets with her. So, shall start the sonata soon! :)

Started work on the violin sonata this evening. Going very well so am very excited about continuing it tommorow. A suitable piece to start on this particular day!

Thoughts update:

Current piece: Violin Sonata, dedicated to Scarlet O'Shea
will hopefully turn out to be a three movement piece. the two outer movements being subtle and slow. the inner being more agressive.

Future pieces:
Something for viola and string orchestra. Felt inspired to write something for viola after hearing Karl's Viola Sonata, a piece I really responded to.

A piece for organ, choir and chamber orchestra.

AN OPERA! :D Still talking about the plot with an author friend at school. Probably be ages until I get to start the music, but I am excited anyway!

Shall continue the violin sonata tommorow, looking forward to doing so! :)

Thank you, Karl! I really look forward to writing it, the viola is such a beautiful instrument as you depicted excellently in your sonata. Now to continue the violin sonata though. Cannot wait to play this with Scarlet... :)

Finished the first movement of the violin sonata this evening and am very pleased. :) The duration totalled at just over 6 minutes. The mood of the piece starts off as rather romantic and optimistic, but for the majority of the movement is extremely dark and depressing. Don't know why... considering the dedicatee of the sonata! I'm sure the other two movements shall turn out to me more joyous! I'll do a lively, energetic second movement and a 'Romance' for the finale. Looking forward to continuing it!

Listened to it again yesterday and realised what the emotional structure of the piece is.

And today, thought of the perfect ending to the sonata. Just need to think of a second movement and the first half of the third movement. School holidays over now... so my time for composition will be limited. Will do as much as I can! And I'll be rehearsing with Scarlet soon, we'll probably start playing the first movement of the sonata. :) Can't wait... :)

Had a really wonderful rehearsal with Scarlet today, we played Elgar's Salut d'amour various times and a bit of Scheherezade. I was reminded of what an incredibly beautiful tone she has - this is what I shall try and write for in the violin sonata. Therefore, it will not be so much a virtuosic work, but a lyrical, romantic to one to show off her heavenly sound. That said, she is incredibly virtuosic as well, so of course the sonata is still very challenging... :)

Should be finished in no more than 2 weeks, and then to play it with her... :)

Finished the second movement of the violin sonata today! So very pleased with it - the movement as an energetic allegro that soon arrives at a really romantic, lyrical expressive slow section, before a quick recapitulation of the allegro and then the romantic section returns to finish the movement. Really is very very romantic, no wonder....

Cannot wait to play it with Scarlet! :) :) Going to be so great! :)

There is a clutch of us here who are very interested to hear this!  Remember to get the tape recorder out...oh no, hang on, this is 2012, no such thing...get the Digital recoding device out!  Well Daniel, as we were both equally excited to freely access the BPO Digital Concert Hall for 48 hours, and I said I would tell you what I listened to, and in case you miss it on the WAYLT thread, here's what I watched and listened to.  You will be horrified to note that there is no Mahler on my list.  This is because I have enough Mahler symphonies live, recorded and on AV that I had to use the 48 hours for something different.  For people and music, I stand by "Familiarity breeds contempt and absence makes the heart grow fonder" - so no Mahler in the 48 hours.  Did this lot instead:

Documentaries:
1 on Carlos Klieber
1 on Claudio Abbado
1 on the BPO in WWII
1 on the BPO trip to Asia

Concerts:
Beethoven 9 - Abbado
Bruckner 6 - Blomstedt
Sibelius 5,6,7 - Rattle
Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique - Rattle
Strauss Ein Heldenleben - Nelsons
Strauss Alpine Symphony - Bychkov
Shostoakovich 14 - N. Jarvi
Bartok Divertimento for String Orchestra - Harding
Beethoven Piano Concerto 2 - Abbado, Pletnev
Tchaikovsky Francesca di Rimini - N. Jarvi
Glanert (new to me) Theatrum Bestiarum - Bychkov
Britten Young persons guide to the Orchestra - Rattle
Tchaikovsky - Waltz of the Flowers (Encore)  N. Jarvi

Interviews
Neeme Jarvi yapping
Guy Braunstein and Bychkov yapping
Bruckner 6 Introduction - Blomstedt (in German)

Quite an intensive 48 hours.  Most fulfulling were (in no order):

The documentaries, the one on Keiber and the one on the BPO during WWII
Strauss Ein Heldenleben - Nelsons
Strauss Alpine Symphony - Bychkov
Tchaikovsky Francesca di Rimini - N. Jarvi
Glanert (new to me) Theatrum Bestiarum - Bychkov

I am pleased to report that the violin sonata is now finished! I finished the piece this evening at around 19.00 after around half a month of work on it. Worked so quickly due to the mass inspiration I have gained from the dedicatee! :) The sonata is in three movements and has a duration of around 20 minutes.
The movements are:
1. Lento - Andante (7 minutes)
2. Lento (5 minutes)
3. Allegro - Romance (Andante). Epilogue. (8 minutes)
The first two movements present a dark feeling, and of stillness, especially in the second movement. These negative feelings are resolved by the finale though with it's strong sense of romance, beauty and optimism. Cannot wait to play it with Scarlet now! :)

Rehearsing with her is always a highlight of my week, especially when it's my own music which is for her! :)

So tommorow is a great day! Rehearsal with Scarlet, school orchestra rehearsal, and I am recieving two trophies at the Chesham Arts Festival Prizegiving ceremony, in which I will also perform the Chopin C Minor nocturne! :)

We rearranged the rehearsal to Friday (tommorow!!!!! :) :) :) :) ) but I gave her the score of the sonata which she seemed really happy to recieve! :) Wonderful moment. Thanks for asking Karl, I'll post an update about the rehearsal tommorow. Am really really excited, as you can tell! :)

Good news about the Chesham Arts Festival Prizegiving: My performance of the Chopin C Minor Nocturne seemed to go down really really well, and I was given the composition class trophy, a piano class trophy and also the trophy and bursary for the most promising senior performer! :) Was very pleased! :)

Good news about the sonata:

Showed to my former composition teacher, who is a now a good friend who's opinion I trust extremely highly. He loved it fortunately, and said it was a beautiful, daring, excellent work! :) Scarlet also seems to like it, and said that she had been showing it to her teachers who had been 'really impressed by it'. :)

Scarlet and I shall start playing it soon! :)

Next work will hopefully be: "Fantasies for Viola and Chamber Orchestra'. Bound to be a very dreamy, and romantic piece. Looking forward to writing it! :)

Started a new piece this evening! Not quite sure what it is yet... but it's a very romantic piece, showing much desire and subtlety. The piece does start with a fortissimo organ solo however, but what follows is very peaceful... A massive climax in mind for later in the piece though. So far, it is based on just four chords, with many harmonies floating around them accompanied by very impressionistic orchestration.

Looking forward to continuing it! :)

Will get the violin sonata out soon, by the way! :)

Had the first rehearsal with Scarlet for the violin sonata today! It was wonderful! :) She is...  0:)
We played through the second movement together and a little bit of the first. She seems to really like it, she called it beautiful! :)

Will be arranging another rehearsal soon.

By the way, I hope you don't mind if I use this thread for my conducting too. (however much of it there will be...!)

I might have mentioned here that the wonderful head of music at our school has allowed me to form my own chamber orchestra which I will be conducting. Most of the members have been recruited now, and we shall be starting after the school Easter Holidays. I am very keen to attempt Prokofiev's Classical Symphony with them, it certainly would be a fun challenge. Maybe also Sibelius' Valse Triste, and perhaps also a bit of Schumann 4. Would be grateful to hear some more ideas though... for this kind of sized orchestra.

:)

I better get the violin sonata out to you all soon! I did promise to quite a while ago...

So you got it into shape that the violinist could read it, without hurling curses upon the composer's head? ; )

Started a new piece! I think it will be a piece called 'Fantasies', a group of small, calm, emotional pieces for chamber orchestra that reflect the thoughts I have....

So, a very personal piece! Very excited about getting down! :)

I finished the first movement of my set for chamber orchestra called 'Fantasies' today, and am very pleased with it! And very excited to continue the work!

The work, hence the title, is to depict my inner thoughts about various feelings, people etc. Within the set, I hope to include a concertino for cello, as I do have a cellist in mind.

Anyway, very much looking forward to continuing the work, and eventually sharing it with you all! And as it is only a chamber orchestra, there may be a chance of getting it performed, maybe at the Academy. :)

We will come up with a lot of suggestions if you will specify the orchestra size - number of woodwinds and brass, harp possible?
The most likely limitation will be getting the music; any regional libraries or other orchestras that will loan parts and scores?
And there are potential problems with contemporary scores that have performing licences still.
Some suggestions: Walton's Façade Suite, Copland: Quiet City, and Ives: the Unanswered Question
R. Strauss Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, some short concertos by Donizetti if you have wind players that can solo, lots of Milhaud.....(thinking of the probable age group and avoiding Requiems and really long pieces)

Thank you for the suggestions. The R.Strauss is a piece I love so I will certainly be considering that one. Concerning the scores, I could probably get most of the parts from IMSLP, hopefully. If not, then I should be able to loan parts from the Academy library, or get my teacher Matthew to do so.  The orchestra at the moment is rather small, and missing a few instruments... We have a fair enough string section with some very good violinists (including Scarlet by the way, the dedicatee of my violin sonata), 2 flutes, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 4 horns, 2 trumpets and a percussionist.
So, the Prokofiev Classical Symphony is a definite choice, we shall be starting that the first week back. :) Thanks again, listener!

... the right size for a lot of the early Classical period and as a chorus accompaniment.  If your trumpeter can get through "The Trumpet Shall Sound" you might see if there are any choral groups that usually do Handel's Messiah with just an organ accompaniment, or a light opera company doing Gilbert and Sullivan (or any other opera) and they should provide the parts and score..
It's a bit of a come-down to do the prep work and than hand it over to someone else, but it would be instructive to you and good publicity for the group to be heard by a new audience.

Thank you, Ilaria! I am so close to completing it now, I just need to think of the perfect ending! :)

And yes, the chamber orchestra for 'Fantasy' is: 1 piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 3 horns, tuba, 4 percussionists, celesta, harp and strings.

Couldn't resist naming the percussion as well... ;D
timpani, glockenspiel, vibraphone, xylophone, bass drum, cymbal, tam tam, gong, triangle, tubular bells, croatles. :)

The piece will  be finished today! Hopefully within the next few minutes even! :)

Listening through to the 'Fantasie' which I completed today, and am so so so so very pleased with it! It may be possible to get a performance of it rather soon, I hope so! I could have it played at the Academy, as one of the principals suggested... that would be amazing! To have my great friends, amazing musicians, playing it! Will hope for that! Maybe Matthew will be able to organize it... :D

Anyway, SO PLEASED with it and cannot wait to share it with all of you. It's a very personal work, depicting my inner thoughts and dreams over various feelings, and a particular person...  0:)

Probably a cello piece, as I do have a cellist on my mind, a lot.  0:) And I actually did ask her whether I could compose a piece dedicated to her, and she said yes and seemed very happy about it! :)

So yes, a cello piece. Maybe you get the picture already, it will be a very romantic piece! Better start thinking of some ideas.... :)

I have been asked by a friend of mine, who used to be in the first violins of the Gewandhaus, and who is now in the firsts of the Berlin Staatskapelle (I think...  :-[ ), to write a piece for her and her boyfriend, who is a pianist, to play. :)

She wants it to be very romantic in mood, which won't be hard to achieve, as the other piece I will be working on at the time will be a cello piece dedicated to a cellist I have rather large affection for... :)

Wonderful WYO rehearsal this evening, in which the conductor at the end called me the 'Player of the Evening' to which I recieved a round of applause from the orchestra! (including a certain person I have a massive affection for)

That certain person I later messaged on facebook, feeling that it was a good time to ask for her number. ;) She is the cellist I am going to be composing a piece dedicated to very soon. So, waiting nervously, I listened to the romantic section from the last movement of Bortkiewicz's 1st piano concerto, using it as a sense of spiritual luck. It worked, I have her number now! So very happy... we're talking a lot. She's so happy that I'm going to be writing a piece for her! That excerpt from the Bortkiewicz has become a lucky piece for me... maybe I'll sneakily quite a small bit of it in the cello piece! ;)

I just had to share it, so very happy! Shall be starting this cello piece very soon!

Great start to the weekend! :)

Thank you, Karl! :) Oh, I'll make sure to get that to you by the end of tommorow. I have a 'study leave' day from school tommorow as we have some exams in the upcoming weeks, which means I get to stay at home. Of course, I'll do some revision ;) (joking aside, I'm planning to do around 3-4 hours of revision...), but I will also finally be able to catch up on composition hopefully! :)

The idea of playing it with her, or just being with her will give me all the inspiration I need I think! :)

I had just a quick look last night, Daniel.  Just a couple of quick questions : )

The score is concert pitch, yes?  It's brief enough that having both players read from the score is a good idea, but the clarinet will need his line transposed.

By the slashes across the stems, do you just mean double notes (i.e., semi-quavers)?

Thanks!

Oh, silly me for forgetting to transpose the score! ;) Just sending along a transposed score now.
Yes, hope that's alright!

Ok, just sent now. Hope this score is better! :)

I had been suffering from a composer's block recently, but I think I am recovering now. Starting to get ideas down for a movement for a new work: 'Serenade for Orchestra'. Hopefully will turn out to be a collection of shorter orchestral pieces. The one I am writing now I am thinking of calling 'Reverie'. :)

Also, hoping to upload my most recent orchestral work 'Fantasie', which I completed in April, soon. Looking forward to hearing some opinions on it! :)

Have spent all of today composing, which feels good considering the composer's block I had been having for the previous few weeks! Composing a miniature orchestral piece, which should hopefully be finished soon. Have also been thinking of ideas for a piano sonata. And also, thinking much about two duets I am going to be writing, soon hopefully! One is a piece for violin and piano, a request from a violinist who was recently a member of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and I think the Berlin Staatskapelle also. And the other is a piece for cello and piano, for a very special dedicatee. I think I may have mentioned her a few posts back on this thread ;)

Looking forward to it all! :)

Daniel, I listened to some of your works, "Romance for piano" and "Seascapes".

Though I'm not a fan of late-romantic music, it was nice to listen to your works. I like some of the elements of it you use (abrupt chord changes).

Will try some others later.

So cool that a Japanese pianist performed your work. She does it with much dedication. Good promotion for you!

Thank you very much, Henk. Recently, I feel that my style is naturally going forwards to be more impressionist, and perhaps more modernist too, still with much romanticism remaining though. I think this started in 'Seascapes', through the 'Violin Sonata' and very much so in my most recent orchestral work 'Fantasie', which I am very excited to upload to share with you all!
Yes, I am very happy and fortunate to have Keiko perform my music! She is a wonderful pianist. I am hoping she will perform my piano sonata once completed as well! :)

Thanks again, Henk! :)

From a facebook post today:
is so happy to tell you all that I was chosen to be 'highly commended' in the BBC Proms' Inspire Composers Competition this year! I entered a rather short, scherzo-like piece simply called 'String Quintet'. In previous years, the highly commended pieces (along with the winner's piece too) have been performed by members of the Aurora Orchestra at the Royal College of Music and broadcast on BBC Radio 3, so I am hoping for this! :)

So very happy and excited about it! :) Here is the website if you are interested in taking a look!

Arrived home from a wonderful Watford Youth Orchestra concert, and recieved an email from the BBC Proms saying that my piece that came highly commended in the competition shall definitely be played by members of the Aurora Orchestra and will be broadcasted on BBC Radio 3! So excited! I get to attend rehearsals too! :)

Following on from this, I had a wonderful facebook conversation with Laure Chan, who you may remember me talking about on the 'If you could conduct' thread. We did actually talk about the idea of future collaborations, saying we would both love to work with eachother! And also, I asked her whether I could write a piece for her. She replied 'it would be an honour', to which I obviously replied 'it would be an honour to have someone like you play my music!' She is such a beautiful violinist! It's sadly Laure's last day at the academy tommorow, as she is off to Switzerland to have lessons from Vengerov in the Sibelius concerto! What a pleasure it is to know her, and to have shared classes with her. Very much looking forward to staying in touch! :)

While listening to Chopin, I've reminded I have got the score of your Violin Sonata; I might start studying the piano part of one of the movements, maybe the 2nd; if I'm not wrong it's the shortest one, a very brilliant, intense movement.

Thank you, and welcome back, Ruben!

Working more on the violin concerto today, and it is going really well I think! Moving on in the first movement, having arrived at a piu mosso after the Largo first section. The piece is all based around one motif so far, I'm thinking another will be introduced soon. It all has a very intimate, peaceful feel, the violin taking a very lyrical part. :) Very very pleased! :)

It was great!!!! :) :)
The players were absolutely amazing, they really understood the piece for it's scherzo-like nature, and I think they were really enjoying playing it! Also got to meet their music director, Nicholas Collon, who seemed to really enjoy the piece too.  Extremely excited about the performance tommorow, and I really hope that the audience will enjoy the piece! :) :)

The concert in which the quintet will be performed is following a whole day of composition workshops which I am also attending along with many of my academy friends who I look forward to seeing again after all these weeks of not having the academy because of the holidays! I'll probably be attending another rehearsal during the day too. And, after the concert in which my piece and the other winning/highly commended pieces will be performed, we get free tickets to go to the evening BBC Prom to see the National Youth Orchestra perform Messiaen's Turangalila Symphony! :) :)

So excited about it all!!!! :) :)

Just back from France and am delighted to see how many great threads have been created during my week away! Getting late now, but I'll be having a busy posting day tommorow, and I have a week worth of the listening thread to read through... :D

Still excited over the BBC Proms Inspire Concert last Saturday, was such a great evening which I will always remember! For those of you who want to listen to the broadcast of this concert, with my String Quintet premiere in it, the broadcast is on BBC Radio 3 on Thursday 16th August starting at 8.40 pm. I shall make sure to post a link closer to the time! Very excited!!!! :)

And with the inspiration from the beauty of Dinan in France where I have just come back from, I am eager to get back to composing! Loads of ideas!

Hope you all have a wonderful evening!!!! :) :)

I do believe that I will be given a recording, hopefully I'll be able to share that. And if you can't catch the broadcast on that date, as it will be available on BBC Iplayer, it can be listened to for a week after the first broadcast.

So excited!!!! :)

Started work on a new piece today, a piece for flute, clarinet, percussion, piano, violin and cello today based on an idea I found a few evenings ago. Very excited about it, seem very inspired for this piece at the moment! Very much look forward to continuing it!
The violin concerto I shall return to in the near future! :)

Working on this again now, I am beggining to think this may work a lot better being just a solo piano piece.... pretty sure of it actually. :)

Well, being a pianist, I can't definitely say that I don't like the idea of a solo piano piece. ;) Though the starting combination of instruments sounded very interesting!

haha :) I do think that the ideas I have for this particular piece suit just a single instrument better than an ensemble. But I do plan to be writing for more 'unusual' combinations of instruments in the future. :)

The edited broadcast of the concert is on BBC Radio 3 at 9.55 pm England time if you want to listen. As it's edited, I'm just hoping they will include all the pieces! :)
One I'd recommend you particularly listen out for is a piece called 'Mermish' by Alex Woolfe which I was very inspired by at the concert, it's a very beautiful piece! :)

Thank you, Ilaria! :) The concert shall be broadcast on this website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/
If you go to it, and click the 'Listen' button to the right side of the page, you will be able to hear the live broadcast. It shall be starting in around 15 minutes, once this live Prom of VW 6 (which is a brilliant performance by the way if you want to tune in early!) has finished. :)

Unfortunately, it seems they were only playing the winning entries instead of any of the 'highly commended' pieces, which is a bit of a shame.... but I do hope you had a chance to hear 'Mermish' by Alex Woolfe, beautiful piece, was glad to hear that again! :) I think I'll still be getting a recording of my quintet, so I'll make sure to share that with you when I have it. :)

I think so, what a pity; of course I listened to Mermish, I agree it's an absolutely brilliant work! About the first two entries I've heard so far, it was that one I enjoyed more. :) Very kind of you, thanks, I'm looking forward to listening to it!

The broadcast will be available for a week on this website. The excerpt of my piece they played starts 38:30 and lasts until 39.30. And you can hear my name at around 47.10! :) :) :) :)

In other good news, I have been asked by the conductor of the Misbourne Symphony Orchestra to conduct the off stage brass parts in the concert of Mahler 1 coming up in Spring next year!! I'll also be playing percussion in that hopefully! :) :) :) :)

Today, I spent almost all of the day on composition, and wrote the new piano piece I was talking about. I feel glad to have now written something this summer after quite a long break! It's a very slow, romantic, calm piece lasting just over 4 minutes. I have just sent a message to Keiko Nishizu, who has played some of my earlier works (4 Etudes, Romance for Piano) to see whether she will want to play it. Will let you know!

Very pleased with it! :) :) :) :)

Hopefully, Karlo! I'll make sure to share it when I get it. :)

The piano piece I was talking of earlier I have decided should be a piece from a set of nocturnes. It certainly has a very night-like feel to it, and I think this piece could present a lake at night, still thinking of a title for that. Hoping to continue this set of nocturnes when I return from a short visit to York with family friends. By the way, Keiko is very keen to perform the pieces! :)

Back in 3 days! Hope you are all well! :) :)

Wrote another piece for the set of nocturnes I'm working on today, a set I am extremely happy with, and proud of too. I'll probably compose one more for the set and then it shall be complete. :)
Very impressionist, being extremely inspired by composers like Ravel, Part, Satie and in fact, more recently, some of Messiaen.

The works are taking a rather nostalgic, mysterious mood, but with a romantic and optimistic atmosphere. :) Very excited about these works! :)

Update: A few days ago, Scarlet sent me a message asking whether she could take the violin sonata (dedicated to her) to a composition workshop at the Guildhill (the junior department, where she is studying at the moment) It's going to be a discussion about contemporary music and the ideas behind it, will be excited to hear back about it! :) And as I told her, I was quite honoured she asked, and very happy she is still thinking of the sonata. Hopefully we'll get together and start playing it again soon. :)

Was amazing and felt so great to be back at the Academy after the summer holidays yesterday. Had a really great day back. I showed Matthew the two nocturnes I have written so far and he appeared to really love them, being really enthusiastic about them after hearing them.

Just being back at the academy gave me so much inspiration and I got the two close ideas for the other nocturne in the set. I am currently writing this and am incredibly pleased with how it is going. I think this set of nocturnes is one of the works that I am most pleased with as a whole, I am very proud of it. Hoping to finish writing the set today! Will be extremely excited to hear Keiko's performance! :)

Just finished the set of nocturnes for piano that I have been working on since August, I am so incredibly happy and pleased with these works. There are three in the set, rather like miniatures, each around 3 minutes each. They take a very calm, rather mysterious but very romantic and optimistic mood. So very happy with these pieces! :)

Had an absolutely GREAT day at the academy today! I showed Matthew the nocturnes, and he was incredibly enthusiastic about them, giving them much praise and calling them my best yet. :)

And, right at the end of the day, Laure came back to visit the academy! First time I had seen her since her last day before the summer! It was so wonderful to see her and talk to her again! We spoke about a variety of things, including the violin concerto that I am going to be writing for her and dedicating to her. I am so happy that she is so excited about the idea, we are even talking about getting the people together to perform it with us! I am so incredibly excited about the idea of getting to work with her, she really is one of the most incredible, inspirational young musicians I have ever met! The violin concerto WILL be my best work yet, it has to be as it is for her. I want her to love it! Very excited to start working on it and to talk more with her about it! :)

A few updates:

I made a few revisions to the nocturnes, tidied the score up, and earlier this week sent them off to the Japanese pianist, Keiko Nishizu, whose performance I very much look forward to hearing! Matthew is also incredibly enthusiastic about the set so is expressing interest to find some more performances at the academy, which certainly would be very exciting!

Laure and I have arranged to meet up this upcoming Saturday at the academy to discuss the concerto. I have many ideas I want to tell her all about, and it will be wonderful to continue getting to know the dedicatee! We will probably also be able to talk about how we'd get the performance at the end. Very very excited! :) I have had many ideas for the concerto recently, and am very excited to start writing it! :)

Realized I had not uploaded any of my work for quite a long time, so here is one of my more recent orchestral works from April this year:
http://www.youtube.com/v/XIkDjKEEJVw

It is called 'Fantasie' and is a short, atmospheric piece in two sections conveying my personal dreams and feelings, and is for a small orchestra.

Hope you enjoy it!

Wow, such a dreamy, expressive piece; absolutely brilliant! I incredibly enjoyed the use of percussion here, it creates a very beautiful, intense atmosphere. Very nice crescendo as well!
Excellent job, Daniel! :)

Met up with Laure yesterday, at the academy, which was absolutely wonderful! :) I am so glad that she is so enthusiastic about the concerto, we discussed many ideas yesterday, it feels great to be working with her! A performance is also being planned for the future, will have more info when that is confirmed. I am so excited to start the concerto!!!! :)

The last week certainly has been hectic! Loads of rehearsals for our school production of 'Guys and Dolls', which I am playing the cello part in. Really great fun, and am very excited for the shows which will be on 4 days next week! :)

Some updates:

- Keiko has sent me a message saying that she has started to practice my Nocturnes, very excited to hear her performance!
- The BBC have sent me a CD recording of the 'BBC Proms Inspire Concert', so hopefully I will be able to upload the whole performance of my 'String Quintet' soon!

Hope you are all well! :)

You're welcome. The score of the Nocturnes looks great, now I'm anxious to listen to Keiko's performance. :) I would be also curious to listen to the whole BBC Proms Inspire Concert; when it was broadcast on the radio, only a minute of the 'highly commended' pieces was included in the programme.

Listened to this on recording Sunday, it was great to hear again (first time since the concert in August). The quintet from the Aurora Orchestra really did wonderful, it was an honour to have them play my piece! I shall hope to upload their performance very soon. :)

Wrote a solo cello piece today that I have had in my mind ever since my grandfather passed away around a month ago. I have named it 'Epitaph', being very inspired by a piece for solo cello of the same name by Henze. It felt very good to finally write it....
It's around 4 minutes, and I am currently wondering to have it as a single piece, or whether to write a suite of cello pieces to go with it....

In other news, hope to be starting my Violin Concerto this week - VERY excited to get started! :)

Made a good start on the violin concerto this afternoon/evening!! Extremely pleased with how it is going and am very excited to continue. If work continues fluently then perhaps the first movement could be close to finished fairly soon! Going to try and work in a particularly lyrical theme to show off the poetry of Laure's playing now. :)
In other news, Keiko has uploaded her performance of my 3rd nocturne! The 3 were supposed to lead into eachother 'attaca', and I have messaged her about that and we'll hopefully have all the nocturnes together in one video at some point. But, it was lovely to hear her play the final nocturne, and she certainly plays it very beautifully! :)

If you want to hear it, here it is:

Will keep you updated about the performance of the complete set. :)

Just finished the first movement of the violin concerto and am incredibly pleased. There may be some revisions, and there is one place in particular where I need to add a bit more to the texture, but overall, it is done! The movement takes a very slow, reflective, optimistic, romantic mood. You will probably hear the heavy influence the Sibelius and Berg concerti have had on me! The next movement I think will be an allegro, probably with a humoresque nature. Very excited to start it!

Great day at the Academy yesterday! Got to conduct first movement of Brahms 2 in conducting class (with our chamber orch) which felt great! I accidently threw the baton in the air to the other side of the room 3 times during this though, which is probably something I should learn not to do ;) However, my teacher told me it was good to have such a loose grip on the baton, which is considered good technique ;)

Also, Matthew played two of my nocturnes in a composition workshop which was held. It was wonderful to hear him play them live, and all my friends who attended the workshop told me that they loved them, which is always wonderful to hear! :)

Listening to my 'Seascapes', which I must have finished around this time last year. I must say that I am incerdibly proud of this work! My teacher really didn't like it, but I remain very pleased with it just how it is. Wish it can get performed some day, although the orchestration is pretty massive! I see this work as when my new style fully started to emerge, so it remains very special to me! :)

Have made a few revisions to the first movement on Matthew's suggestion, and should hopefully have a properly updated score of that by the end of this week. Then, to work on the inner allegro movement, which I am very excited to get to work on! The idea of Laure playing what I write is so inspiring! :) Thank you for asking, Karl! Glad your organ sonata is going well, very excited to hear some! :)

Thank you, Ilaria! I have a few ideas, and most of the movement will be based on an idea stated at the start of the whole concerto, which is a rising 5ths idea which is the basis for the whole concerto. :) The second movement will be very contrasting however, and will be a virtuosic allegro I am thinking. :)

Really pleased with the start I've made on the second movement allegro of my violin concerto today, a lot of progress! I was quite nervous about how I was going to start this movement, as it's been a long time since I last wrote an allegro, so I was relieved and glad that it seems to be flowing out!!

Very excited to continue it! :)

So happy to announce that after two days of work writing the second movement, it is now finished. Really happy with it, it has a sarcastic aggression representing my feelings to a certain person, but ending in a way that shows the reality of the situation perhaps.

Listening to this over and over, so so happy! It was exciting to write an allegro again! So thrilled about this concerto! :)

haha, when I get really inspired and excited about what I write then I tend to write quite fast! The allegro movement is around 4 minutes long, and is very energetic, quite relentless in most places. Looking forward to showing it to you all.

And so excited to hear Laure play this when it comes to it! One more movement to write! :)

Oh dear, has been almost a whole month since I last posted!!

Revisions over the second movement of the violin concert have been occuring, and am almost ready to move onto the last movement now. We have our school easter holidays coming up soon, so hopefully I may even finish it then!

Have finally uploaded the complete performance of the String Quintet, which was given by members of the Aurora Orchestra last summer at the Royal Academy of Music in a pre-Prom concert. http://www.mediafire.com/?ft0qu0hssudyfai
So happy with the performance, so I hope you may enjoy it! The audio is incredibly quiet here, so please turn up your volume!!

Started work on the last movement of the violin concerto a few days ago, although felt that what I had written was insufficient to start the movement, so tonight has been spent writing a quasi-cadenza like opening to lead into the rest of the movment which will be bringing back many previous ideas in various guises. Very very happy and excited to continue! :)

Yesterday evening and tonight, had some successful time on the concerto, and I am delighted to say that the last movement is pretty much complete now! I had started again from what I had started a few weeks ago and am so much happier. I am going to title the movement 'Soliloquy'. The composition of the work was happening during quite an eventful few months in my life, and I think the last movement tracks reflection on this, as well as, looking towards the future with hope.

There are a few revisions to make, including a slightly changed middle section for the Presto, and more orchestration in the finale, but I am very close to being able to call the VC completed! Very happy and excited! :)

Had a wonderful recital yesterday in which I played the Brahms A major intermezzo from opus 118 and 2 of my own nocturnes, which were very well received it seems so I was very happy! I'll see if I can get the recording uploaded! One of my academy friends, a wonderful flautist was also performing and after hearing the nocturnes not only wanted to play them but also requested a flute piece from me! Very excited about this as I have been wanting to write for the flute for a long time and she is an outstanding flautist! :)

Have made revisions to the violin concerto and am very pleased to say that it is finished! Need to tidy up the score just a tiny bit and write the dedication page and then I can get it sent to the dedicatee who seems very excited about it! My teacher is also trying to find an orchestra and performance as well! :)

Also, seemed to be particularly inspired this afternoon as I set a love poem by our friend John Copeland to music, for soprano and piano. Very pleased with it, and hope I have managed to depict the sense of hopeful imagination, desire and beauty which John's lovely poem depicts. Hopefully a performance is to follow soon and I am pondering whether to write a set to surround it. :)

Having a good week!

Monday - the afternoon workshop I conducted with my own orchestra I set up. Mendelssohn Hebrides/Schumann 4 plus two new pieces by two of my academy friends. Absolutely loved it. :)

And yesterday, made a start on my new String Quartet and am very very very very pleased and excited. Quite different to anything I've done before, more intense.... Very Schnittke/Shostakovich inspired.

Also, have secured a fantastic soprano to sing my 'In Sparkling Night', a setting of beautiful words from our very own John Copeland!

Also, have secured a fantastic soprano to sing my 'In Sparkling Night', a setting of beautiful words from our very own John Copeland!
Sounds great! You should listen to Weinberg next :)
(check FB when you have time...)

Happened to have done a bit of work on it today actually, revising the first movement a tiny bit, developing the motif a tiny bit more in some viola solos. :)
Need an idea for the scherzo now!! :)

Could I request some suggestions for rather short chamber orchestra pieces written in 1960/70s? Need to find one to conduct rather soon in our next school concert and that's the theme. :)

Holmboe's Chamber Symphony No. 3 is around 22 minutes, is that too long?

Why does have to be between those years? Just out of curiosity.

How about Sculthorpe's Irkanda IV, for violin, strings & percussion? It's about 10 and half minutes long. It was composed in 1961. Here's some information:

Just as that has been decided as the theme for the school concert by our head of music. There's going to be a lot of variety. Thank you for the Sculthorpe suggestion, shall certainly listen.

I think I have decided on Schnittke Polyphonic Tango, which will be difficult, but going to be great fun! Brilliant piece. :)

Composition update..

Breaking out of a composer's block, having just written the first of my set of 'Miniatures' for Sinfonietta, which shall hopefully be conducted by my teacher, Matthew Taylor, and the Academy Contemporary Music ensemble this year! Wind quintet/String quintet. It's a very reflective work again, with a sense of subconscious to it if that makes any sense.. (I'm better with notes than words ;) )

Excited to continue. :)

Ah yes, Schnittke's Polyphonic Tango would be a good one. 8)

Yes, this is good news. I was worried about you for awhile wondering whether you would continue to compose, but thankfully this was just a 'writer's block.'

Thank you all for your kind words! I do often worry about how often I suffer from writer's block, but you can't force ideas if you want the music to sound natural and of a high enough standard.. but it just does feel great when finally you write something you can feel proud of. :)

My plans are to write these 'Miniatures for Sinfonietta', and then I have to write an orchestral piece for school coursework, but after that, I'll finish my string quartet and maybe start my next big orchestral piece, which will be highly philosophical. :)

I have a title for that one: The sound of a tree falling in an empty forest. There will be a lot of wooden mallets in this one ;)

I like that very much, Karlo!!!! One of the movements perhaps. I intend this to be a work I work on for a number of years so it's going to be my first 'big big' piece. :)

Listening to the first of my Sinfonietta Miniature and realising that subconsciously when the piccolo solo takes over, the harmony resembles almost exactly one of my favourite bits from Mahler 9! Perhaps a subtle musical RIP to Abbado....

I'm sure you won't hear the sound of one hand clapping after the premiere  :P

Sounds great!  (which bit?)
Now, listen to some DSCH symphonies for inspiration ;)

I see that the last time I posted here I had just started my 'Sinfonietta'. Glad to report that this piece won the first ever Gareth Walters Composition Prize at Junior Royal Academy of Music, adjudicated by Robert Saxton (Resident Composer at Oxford), and was performed by the Contemporary Music Ensemble there conducted by my teacher, Matthew Taylor.

Thank you for the bump!

I am writing a viola concerto, everyone! Two movements down and honestly think it's the best thing I've done... I'll be conducting the premiere in winter with my orchestra, and the soloist is Alinka Rowe, principal violist of our National Youth Orchestra!
