This landed this past week, recommended by our san anton', and then further endorsed by my brother in the Palmetto State:

As yet I have only listened to the Suite which is the bonus track at the end of the second disc, but that is a beauty.

Just bought Cannonball & Nat Adderley - Quintet in San Francisco. The back cover says it is "live" but live is in quotes.

Is that the one with "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"?  If so, it is live and really good.

Bought this because it goes along with Emerson, whose work I read now. It breathes wisdom.

As well as this one, in some other way (bought it as well):

"Quintet Live in San Francisco" is the early band with Bobby Timmons - terrific album! And very much live, recorded at San Francisco's Jazz Workshop.

"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" is live, too - but not in a club. Rather they invided some folks into the studio, created an improvised bar and made sure the atmosphere was right. Cannonball obviously enjoyed recording live - there are amazing recordings from the Lighthouse, another one from the Jazz Workshop ("Jazz Workshop Revisited"), Comblain-la-Tour ("Cannonball in Europe" - a favourite of mine, there's an amazing quartet feature for Yusef Lateef on oboe, playing "Trouble in Mind"), New York's Village Vanguard ("Cannonball Adderley Sextet in New York"), Tokyo's Sankei Hall ("Nippon Soul" - another favourite ... and from Sankei Hall as well comes the later "Cannonball in Japan"), Shelly's Manne Hole ("Cannonball Adderley Live!") ... those are just some favourites, there are more. I guess about half of Adderley's total output was recorded live.

Here's the best site on Cannonball, including an extended discography (with even liner notes reproduced):

Just took delivery of this fine disq. Not entirely sure this qualifies as jazz, but it certainly kicks ass. (I heard it on KCSM's All Out in any case.) Some very interesting percussion with a range of other instrumentalists in small ensembles. A range of influences here from jazz to rock to techno/electronica...

30 tracks from 1963.

Here is a review

A two-CD set, with the band in great form drawing on material from all eras. There are full performances of "Suite Thursday" - much livelier than the studio take, and improved by an extended Nance violin solo on "Lay-By" - and "Tone Parallel To Harlem," in addition to the usual parade of hits ("Rockin' In Rhythm," a rearranged "Perdido"), new material ("Theme From The Asphalt Jungle") and some offbeat oldies ("Rose Of The Rio Grande"). Cootie Williams had just rejoined the band after a twenty-year absence, so "Concerto For Cootie" is back, paired with the new "Tootie For Cootie," and the set ends with "Echoes Of Harlem." Hodges is as tender as ever on his features "On The Sunny Side Of The Street" and "The Star-Crossed Lovers." Strayhorn's bombastic "The Eighth Veil" is one of the stranger tunes here; Gonsalves's feature "Cop-Out," on the other hand, sounds like any big band you'd hear on a 50s film soundtrack. Oh, and if you want to study the distinct approaches of the various soloists, this is a great place to start, because Duke calls out the name of the featured player at the end of each tune (even each solo on the everybody-blows-a-chorus "Jam With Sam"). (DBW)

I continue to be drawn to Duke's music and enjoy the later efforts as much as the earlier ones.  And being a live/concert recording junkie, this was just too much to pass up.

You have good instincts.   ;)  Tomasz Stanko is an excellent ECM artist.  He really got noticed after playing with the legendary pianist Krzysztof Komeda (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krzysztof_Komeda),  He's put out many CDs, and they are all uniformly good.

It's good to know because I think I will be searching for some additional recordings by him and his ensembles.

My starting point was quite prosaic: I got a little obsessed with a work called "Terminal 7" which is (or was) the intro of the TV series Homeland.

I have loved the remaining works.  :)

Coincidence: I was in the record store (they stock mostly new and used LPs) near my house just the other day, and I saw a Thomasz Stanko used CD for $5. I LOVE the ECM label, and figured it must be good, but I usually don't just buy music by artists I know nothing about. I meant to look this up when I got home, but didn't write it down, so of course I forgot his name...

Anyway, after reading this and listening to the sample, I will pop back in there and grab it!

His style kind of reminds me of Enrico Rava, who I like a great deal.

If you like Stanko, try this (highly recommended):

Listening to it now, Brian.  Fantastic stuff with great sound for live works.  The only pice that is misleading is that this is not one concert, but music from four concerts at the Olympia in '63.  Still, grab this two disc set.  I snagged it when I asked on another jazz forum what recordings.  One cat listed this and I am most grateful for the rec.

Yes; Enrico Rava would come to mind.  I find Stanko's tone to be darker, more gravelly, and and his phrasing is looser rhythmically; which I like a lot.  I like Balladya for several reasons, 1) Dave Holland; 2) it is a piano-less quartet; 3) the music is fairly abstract.

Walked into the used CD store and found out someone had monetized a large stash of Miles Davis CDs.

Walked out with the following
A Tribute to Jack Johnson
Filles de Kilimanjaro
Ascenseur pour l'echaufad
Amandla
Someday My Prince Will Come
and one ugly duckling
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61NTDDNiTDL._SX522_.jpg)
To quote an Amazon review

Songs are from the widely available Dial recording sessions of Charlie Parker, 1946-47:
Track Listing (studio recs., dates probable):
1. Night in Tunisia (3/28/46)
2. Dewey Square (10/28/47)
3. Yardbird Suite (3/28/46)
4. Ornithology (3/28/46)
5. Scrapple from the Apple (11/4/47)
6. Embraceable You (10/28/47)
7. Bird of Paradise (10/28/47)
8. Moose the Mooche (3/28/46)
9. Don't Blame Me (11/4/47)
10. Cool Blues (2/19/47) [Miles not on this track]

IOW a pirated CD that should really have Parker's name on the cover.
Although I have it on now and find it very good despite the sonics.

BTW, will probably go back later this week to get ESP, Miles Smiles and possibly others.

Yes, very nice box!

I collected nearly the entire "Original Vogue Masters" series released earlier by BMG, and still got the box as it's such a nice one!

It's successor though is a huge letdown ... was hoping for some more genuine Vogue sides, maybe including a few rarities, instead it's a box of US recordings that Vogue licensed back in the day. This one here, just in case:

Brian, Ubu, nice to see you guys over here :D  This setting seems rather more cozy than in the main threads.
It's nice that I saw this just now, as I just put on the first disc a few minutes ago.  Django Reinhardt is showing me why he's a legend ??? Wicked cool playing.  I used to have some of his stuff on cassette years ago, but it didn't spark like this stuff.  Some tracks have clarinet, which gives it an almost Dixie energy.  The recordings are old, but "historical sound" is so much more forgiving to jazz than to classical.  Makes me want to turn out the lights and start smoking cigarettes...
The soloists sound really sharp and clear on this disc, and I'm guessing that will be the case throughout.
The original discs represented in this box were were often pretty short, but lots of the CDs have 1 or 2 bonus albums added, so they are long and well loaded--and it looks to be a gold-mine! I'm binge-buying right now, but this box looks to be the best thing I've gotten in a long time.

I'm not Henk, but I do like Matthias Eick, but the only album I've listened to so far has been Skala and was quite impressed with it, although there's not much improvisation in the tradition of bebop or hard-bop or even late swing music (not that this is a deal breaker). Also, Eick pretty much has the whole show the entire time (which I don't mind in this instance) and the compositions themselves are pretty sparse. This may or may not be your cup of tea, but the best thing to do is do some sampling.

Since when did listening/enjoying a recording become some kind of contest? Did I miss one of the memos?

For me, this album is as good as Kind of Blue (don't like Giant Steps):

This album is so good that I can put it on repeat and never get tired of it, but, again, enjoying music shouldn't be about finding something better, it should be about finding the kind of music that moves you the most and people should just forget whether it's 'groundbreaking' or 'ahead of its time'. I think this kind of mentality completely drains the life out of listening to music.

I was talking about the greatness of that Manu Katche album and how I rated it as highly as Kind Of Blue. Never were the words "Eick is the new Miles Davis" uttered. I was merely making a grand comparison. That's all. You read too much into my previous comment.

However I could say you are almost saying "Katche is the new Miles Davis". Right?

Yes, do check out the album. :)

I'm certainly not saying that either. I'm comparing the album Playground to the greatness of Kind Of Blue.

Just purchased a bunch of Telarc stuff:

- Oscar Peterson Trio Live at the Blue Note (4 CDs)
- Oscar Peterson Meets Roy Hargrove and Ralph Moore
- Lionel Hampton and His Golden Men of Jazz

The Blue Note set is wonderful! (Only wish OP hadn't used Bobby Durham and his rim-shot-on-4 all the time ...)
If you're looking for more, I'd recommend the Very Tall band, another reunion (Blue Note is the reunion of the Peterson/Ellis/Brown trio plus drums, Very Tall is the reunion of OP/Milt Jackson). However, it seems CD-Rs are being sold (and not openly so ... happens with ex-Fantasy/OJCCD reissues as well, alas - I hate it).

Have the Hampton, too ... not great but certainly enjoyable.

I borrowed the Hampton Blue Note (and OP meets Dizzy, Henk!) from a friend who let me loan them for as long as I wanted. The Hampton album was the first time I'd heard Harry "Sweets" Edison, and his solo feature is so great it caused me to buy 5 more Sweets CDs.

I do think there are a few great tracks on there - the Sweets feature, the Hampton feature where he uses a classical theme-and-variations approach to slowly build the tune up - but having been culled from several evenings, it is weird to have some great artists on there who only do 1-2 solos each.

Re: Oscar Peterson

While his recorded legacy is huge, I don't think he was ever better than with his classic trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen.  They made a dozen or more absolutely great recordings, this being one:

Ridiculously cheap price.  This is NOT a re-release of the old riverside box.  Doesn't have all the alt takes, which, frankly, I'm happy about.  Cool cover, but I'd've paid more for little cardboard sleeves with all the original artwork...

This is my first purchase following from advice received in my 'What next? thread. (While I'm a bit  wary of the audio quality of a collection like this, an awful lot of my jazz listening has involved transfers from 78s, so I'm used to my jazz not being very hifi. So I think that won't be a big issue)

Footnote, begun less than 5 minutes later: Just as I clicked to post the above, there was a clunk downstairs. It was the arrival of the Peterson box. Synchronicity or what!!?

By the way, it is a very red box. It contains a very red booklet and very red CD sleeves. If you like red, this is for you ....

Second footnote: Listening to track 14, in the Irving Berlin half of CD1 - 'Isn't it a lovely day', on headphones via computer - admittedly nothing like so good as my hifi system, but based on what I'm hearing now, I don't think the audio quality is likely to trouble me.

I may as well chat as I listen - tracks playing one after another. What I like about this is the fact that he so clearly loves the tunes (and let's face it, they are absolutely crackin' tunes). So the improvisation sounds like a celebration of that tunefulness - as opposed to an abandonment of it. That is exactly the kind of thing I've been looking for.

Yesterday we had a day which could not quite decide between sleet and freezing drizzle.  Late afternoon, the precipitation stopped for a while, and I did get out for a walk, and it really was lovely—though I certainly needed to watch my footing.

Just so you're aware: the sessions on December 6 & 7, 1953, are still with Barney Kessel on guitar. He hated traveling on the road, so he agreed to join the trio for a year, and then quit. Herb Ellis' first date with the group is the December 10 one.

This is the set I'm talking of, assuming it's the very red one you mean:

[asin]B005HPQ7OG[/asin]

It's of course a crappy public domain release, but nice enough really ... I've got the Mosaic box with the complete Peterson/Kessel/Brown recordings on seven discs, lots of overlap, but this box still fills some gaps I was too lazy to try and fill with official reissues.

Anyway, Peterson did another round of song books later on, with the Brown/Thigpen group. These have been collected by Universal Canada into a very, very nice box:

[asin]B00284G370[/asin]
Again, budget presentation, simple paper sleeves (nicely designed and with tracklists) and a small booklet (with a short introductory note and full details) ... the playing is usually rather restrained, not much improvising going on - which is nice, as it gives more room to the actual songs, which are of course glorious, most of the time (I'm particularly fond of Cole Porter, myself ... but Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Harold Arlen ... these guys were giants).

Some more details here (price is a bit steep there, but I think that's where I bought mine, back in 2009 when it came out):

I went a bit crazy for Jazz/Bossa-Nova this week and I only have a few albums like this at the moment so I decided to pull the trigger on the Getz set.
I still might get the other Getz box or some individual Getz albums.
Had my eye on the Desmond one for a little while now - looking forward to both these recordings :)
Edit: Forgot to add the Brubeck album

Yeah, I strongly advise to stay away from such crap reissues as the one pictured ... that is, if there are indeed alternatives!

I bought a few of the cheap re-issues early on in my Jazz collecting but I have found that often the sound is a bit inferior to the official releases so im just trying to get them were possible now.
I recently tried listening to some albums from a couple of those "8 Classic Album" (Real Gone Jazz?) boxes I bought of Charles Mingus and Chet Baker - they are just awful and some of the tracks have glitches in them too :(.
I rebought the Miles Davis Workin', Cookin, Steamin' Etc. series in a cheap issue and later in the RVG re-issue series. There was a big difference I think in the sound (the RVG is miles better to me) :)

Yeah, I heard about these glitches (and also cases where discs wouldn't be copying properly when people tried to create MP3 files from them).

I guess they basically steal earlier CD reissues and then run some filters, changing sound. The copying of other CD releases isn't legal, they ought to go back to 50+ years releases actually (and including bonus tracks that only appeared in the 80s or 90s isn't legal either as the copyright period starts upon release date IF something is released before the copyright period is over). To my best knowledge, UK outfit Avid actually does that: rip vinyl, in so-so quality, but at least they're straight up. They occasionally add some rare live/radio tracks, another grey area, but not stolen from a label ...

Anyway, Real Gone Jazz is really the lowest of the low, but of course for newbie's that don't do streaming (I don't, but I've been collecting jazz for 20 years now, so I've been around for the last few years of the great jazz reissue period, with many series available that is long OOP by now), I see the point ... however, as soon as you get serious, you might indeed feel like replacing these crapola reissues with better ones.

(And just in case, Real Gone Music is not related, they have done a few nice reissues of rather off-kilter stuff: Ahmad Abdul-Malik, George Braith ...)

I've had nothing but joy from the many Real Gone Jazz sets I've had. Particularly as so many of those albums are long-deleted.

I certainly wouldn't call them crapola, and I've seen them taken seriously and even praised on jazz forums.

They are what they are: cheap. Either way, I'm sure if this type of reissue has been around when I started exploring jazz, I'd have been all over them, and certainly don't want to be the kill joy there ... some folks prefer having liner notes and stuff, others can't be bothered much, different strokes.

Myself, I do try and get official reissues whenever I can - but as you say, many of them have been OOP for a long time by now, so the odds aren't that great that you can still find them without spending a fortune.

As this is a classical forum, you have to be aware that jazz sales are only a small percentage of classical sales. The majors have mostly stopped releasing any jazz (reissues and new recordings) around a decade ago - that sucks of course, but it does seem that doing proper reissues isn't profitable any more, unless you go for the high-price segment (and even then it's more a labour of love than anything else), or if you (steal others work - I know not all these labels do, but I'm weary - and) put (it) out on PD reissues. Columbia even stopped their Ellington reissue series ... these recent boxes are a nice touch, but then again many collector's have all or much of what's in there and don't feel like re-buying. And obviously with these boxes, lots of stuff falls between the cracks.

I have these albums already as part of a cheap boxset but Im a bit unhappy with the SQ (I think they are probably mastered poorly).
I really love these albums - I hope the sound in the new purchases is an improvement :)

Needless to say, these are all mighty fine!

Just in case, the best (CD) edition of the 1961 Village Vanguard recordings is this three disc set, which is still around:

[asin]B000AMJEKA[/asin]
it blows things up to three discs (as opposed to the usual two), but you get the music in running order, while the old Original Jazz Classics CDs had silly programming (alternate takes following masters straight ahead, made for rather weird listening) .... bu the price is very much okay no matter if you count it as a double or triple set.

Nice order indeed! (Not sure about that edition of the Massey Hall concert, it's one of the PD ones and Definitive has a history of muffled sound, MP3-sourced sets etc) .... either way, Massey Hall 1953 is kind of the last big event of bop history, the final gathering of the giants ... and then there's this one (there's PD releases of it as well, but do yourself a favour and get the proper one, released by a helluva great label):

[asin]B0009Q0EQ0[/asin]
This has all the raw excitement of early bebop, pioneers still in discovery modes, exploring new territory as it goes ... Al Haig in on piano, Curly Russell on drums, you get a guest spot by Don Byas, and there's that most interesting thing regarding the drums: Max Roach is there, doing his usual, exciting job ... and then Sid Catlett takes over the drum chair for a short moment, the giant of swing and swing-to-bop drums and a true master - and listen how the beat settles when he's playing! Not saying either is better, but the recording allows us a rare glimpse on what could happen when one band member changes ... and in real time, too.

There's more live Bird and Diz on Uptown ... these two are highly recommended as well:

Thank you very much for those recs! I'm sure I will collect them all.

BTW an Amazon reviewer guided me to that Massey Hall edition - apparently it presents the full concert in track order without Mingus's dubbed-in bass from later. Who knows...probably eventually I will get one with the Mingus overdubbing, to compare  ;D

Oh, I see! Guess it might have been a smart buy then! Not sure, as I gave in eventually and bought the huge Mingus Debut box (12 CDs, it wasn't as expensive as it is now, while it was still in print - there's a smaller Universal Italy one now, which only contains the Mingus *albums*, not all the sideman sessions and stuff, here: http://www.amazon.it/dp/B00C86KL6M/) - anyway, Mingus is one of my biggest musical heroes so I just had to get the box eventually ... and it contains the entire concert (trio and quintet sets), including the undubbed and dubbed versions for all those tracks where Mingus added new bass lines later on. So I really wouldn't know what single disc edition would cover that.

It's of course the *leader* sessions, not the *albums* - I actually remembered my mistake but then failed to fix it ... either way, lots of music there, some of it more successful than other bits, some pretty odd, but if you like Mingus, all very much worth exploring! I'm afraid though it might come with a minimal booklet (tracklistings, line-ups, recording data) - which is really a drag in this case, as the big Debut box domes with an LP-sized booklet and session-by-session comments etc, and for such at least partly obscure and odd material, that's quite a help.

Hey guys - yes its just me (Conor) again.
I guess I come and go a lot the last few years - the main reason is that I haven't really been listening to much Classical Music (and sometimes it seems like I wont be listening to it again in the near future) so I feel a bit embaressed or like im wearing out my welcome here or something :-[.
Anyway I really like this forum and most everyone here so I don't stay away too long - I kind of like changing my username and stuff too for something different.
Theres lots of Music forums on the net and I have checked out many of them but this (and SHF) are the only ones I feel comfortable in - the others are all like cesspools of humanity or something :-X. I don't mean to be harsh but this Forum has a much better demographic than most others out there.
I've been on this forum since 2009 so I am pretty much here for good I think - even if I go away for a while its likely I will be back eventually.
I still really love Classical Muisc too - just a bit interested in other Musics at the moment but I think Ill get back into it at some stage :)

This is a classic quartet and one of Abercrombie's best groups IMHO. In Abercrombie's sound, especially for this quartet, you can hear the precursor to what I call the 'Metheny" (Pat Metheny that is) guitar tone where there's this chorused/echoed type of tone being emulated through the usage of effects. I'm not sure how Abercrombie achieved his sound, but Metheny used two Lexicon Prime Time Delay units to help create his signature sound, but Abercrombie being older and already honed his own personal sound, I'm not sure what equipment he used to achieve it. Anyway, Abercrombie was the first true jazz guitarist on ECM to get on the label as a main player. Of course, you had guys like Terje Rypdal and Ralph Towner around the same time, but these guys weren't strictly 'jazz' guitarists IMHO. I really look forward to hearing the rest of this quartet's albums as I only own one previously: Arcade, which was available as a Japanese-only release for years as the European and American releases remained long OOP and still are outside of this new box set.

From the folks at Acoustics Sounds....with love. All sealed and ready for their initial play. I've never had anything that I purchased from them that has been re-sealed or not as described, but they can charge a shiny penny for most of their vintage stock.

Blues and Ballads, Brad Mehldau Trio

[asin]B01D5I30X2[/asin]

The music is simpler and less technical than in his previous album, leaving more room for emotion.
Maybe its the influence of Jeff Ballard.  Its my favorite kind of Jazz.  I would be interested to hear what other GMG members think of this album and/or of Brad Mahldau discography.

For those in the US, this may be of interest.

If their pricing follows their practices with classical, they will be most competitive on pricing in new realeases and CDs going out of print.  They seem to offer a wide range of smaller labels.

He has recorded a ton and some more of albums ... the best are great, but some are just sorta nice and not all that deep, I find.
The trio with Johnson/Baron though is brilliant, CAM has several discs of theirs, most famous I assume the two volumes of "Play Morricone" - they have been reissued as a double disc set.

If you want to hear him with horns, get "Fellini Jazz" (also on CAM), with Kenny Wheeler and Chris Potter (and then also get "Journey to Donnafugata" by another pianist, Salvatore Bonafede, whom I'm otherwise not familiar with).

CAM has also dedicated one of their "Complete Remastered Recordings on Black Saint & Soul Note" to Pieranunzi ... it contains the first of the albums with Johnson/Baron, "Deep Down", which I think is the best of the albums in the box (which is a bit of a mixed bag, some of it falling into that merely nice category).

Yes - and it's full of good music!

The other one that was released later, is mostly US recordings that were taken over and distributed by Vogue in France/Europe. Not of much interest to me, honestly. This one:

A double CD (priced as a single CD), although the whole thing could fit comfortably on a single CD. It's also being issued as a double LP, so perhaps the explanation lies there. I listened to the first CD earlier. Has a mellow folksy feel.  Some numbers have vocals, some do not.

Also, a Coltrane album that for some inexplicable reason I never bought, even on vinyl. It is excellent, from my favorite period of Atlantic.

Dizzy Gillespie at Newport 1957 (with Lee Morgan, Al Grey, Pee Wee Moore's Doodlin', Benny Golson, Wynton Kelly, Mary Lou Williams, etc.)

The Dizzy is excellent, the Hines great fun, the Miles ... hmmmm, somehow the band wasn't really in good shape that day - but it's nowhere near a "bad" record.

Yes, that is true! And with Cannoball calling in a sick day, you don't get the full sextet at the Plaza either ... however, the "1958 Session" is excellent - it made up half of the "Jazz Track" LP (which on the other side presented the US release of the soundtrack to "L'Ascenseur pour l'echafaud"), but that left off the clear highlight of the session, a long, smokin' take of "Love for Sale" with a rather special Bill Evans (he sounds almost Monk-ish there, and it's great!)

Missing that in my collection.  Suggested cd?

I have the 6CD set of the complete Miles/Coltrane sessions, the session is in the LP-sized anniversary special edition of "Kind of Blue" as well ... the track initially was on one of those Columbia albums compiling tracks so far not released, in this case "Circle in the Round" - detailed info as usual on Peter Losin's great site:
http://www.plosin.com/milesahead/Sessions.aspx?s=580526

Not sure it's on any current CD, alas ... there was this old release, part of a series usually coming with bad sound (the KoB reissue was ridiculous, sounded like crap, had a seventies pic on the cover):

[asin]B0000027R5[/asin]
But I can't really recommend it (don't know it, but based on my general knowledge about these "Masterpieces" reissues ...)

This one here would be preferrable if there's a physical release with a corresponding tracklist ... not sure if it was in the "Miles in Mono" CD box, which I have at home, but I'm stuck in the office right now:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IRNZ62O/
But I think it's not, if the tracklist here is correct, there's "Jazz Track" (disc 4), which actually is consistent with my memory:
https://www.amazon.com/Original-Mono-Recordings-Miles-Davis/dp/B00ESEYE60/

So I really think the best option is looking for a cheap copy of the Miles/Trane six disc box ... the cheapest third edition (2011 I think, not proper long box with loose booklet but "book" edition w/booklet bound into the book) used to go for 20€ over here, but I think it's OOP by now ...

Miles used to not be that problematic, but then in recent years his works were released in so many packaging options that I had to just shut it down.  As soon his material became more difficult to sort than Armstrong's and Coltrane's  I put on blinders and was satisfied with what I had as my "classical" completest psychosis was challenged to the brink both financially with re-buying stuff I had to net a few new tracks as well as just trying to sort out what is what.  Just look at all the cds of live recordings that have been released for Miles.  Man!  What makes all these releases so ironic is that they have not reissued the Complete Plugged Nickel (I'm lucky to have one) which should be in every Mile's collection, small or large.

Well, it was quite easy for me, as I was there and wiling to enter when Sony/Legacy started the box-sets (in collaboration with Mosaic, who did the LP versions that were way too rich for me then). So I bought up all the boxes (Miles & Gil was the first to appear, in sequence they're Miles & Trane, Miles & Gil, Seven Steps, 1965-68, IaSW, BB, JJ, OTC, plus live the Plugged Nickel, Cellar Door, and then later on the Black Hawk, which I got as two double disc sets, I think they had them combined with some cardboard wrapper added).

What they left off was the - gorgeous but hardly essential - "Someday My Prince Will Come" (only the two cuts with Coltrane are at the end of the Miles & Trane box), the 1961 Carnegie Hall Concert (they should have done a 6 disc set with Mobley: Prince, Carnegie, Black Hawk - but I guess there's still enough of a bias against Mobe being a lightweight and not up to bla bla ... which is somehow understandable but still a pity).

Then, the two-disc "Round About Midnight" added some attractive live material as a bonus (but didn't include all that was on the Miles & Trane box in terms of alternates), and obviously the great series of live double albums beginning with "Miles at Fillmore" and ending with the two doubles from Japan, which actually weren't treated in the US the way they deserve to be ... I actually bought Japanese SHM-CD reissues of those two, eventually). They also threw out the final gig with Shorter in Winter/Spring 1970, another most welcome set.

And then there was the Bootleg Series ... I hope it continues with the 1971, 1973 and 1975 concerts/tours, but am not quite sure what we'll see next. So far, the series has been great, but I was a bit disappointed by the Lost Quintet volume - I'd love to see a second, but with another concert (DVD only) having been released as part of the lp-sized (gorgeously made!) anniversary edition of BB, I doub't there'll be more.

That's one Smith I don't yet have ... guess I'll have to get it, too!

The other Trema/Laserlight set of his is interesting, too: "Pleyel, Nov. 20th, 1968 / Pleyel, Dec. 1st, 1969" - the first set has Nathen Page on guitar and stalwart Donald Bailey on drums, the second has Eddie McFadden on guitar, who started with JOS in 1957 (Bailey was there from album #2 on, in 1956), and Arthur Crosby on drums (don't know him).

Of JATP I have the wonderful 10 CD box with the complete 1944-49 sessions (including plenty of previously unissued tracks), there was a cheap repackaging a few years ago that has itself become impossible to find quite a while ago ... good stuff, though generally not music I'd just put on independently of my mood.

Just a heads up.  The packaging for the Smith is thin and the cds are a bit "sketchy looking".  Almost cdr like with hardly any printing on them.  However, the shop let the two cd set go to me for $10, so I thought fair enough.  The same concert can also be found on these two disca:

Yep, Europe 1 is the first generation, the digipacks (all split into single discs if they were initially multi-disc-sets) were the third, in between for most of these, there was the second generation on LaserLight - often split as singles but usually/originally two jewel cases with a cardboard box around it:

I have a bunch of these ... the most important one is the Miles one from March 1960 with Coltrane, who gets booed heavily. The first edition (four disc set combining the March and October 1960 sets, the later with Sonny Stitt, and it's wonderful, as the much less interesting Stitt has Miles challenged to play a lot more and meaningful himself, while with Coltrane he usually presents the theme, takes a few bars and then leaves the floor to Trane who is playing some hot sh*t) has a booklet with photos and several pages of remembrances by musicians that were there (and split into the "pro" and "con" camps). Very interesting!

Then there are sets by Thelonious Monk (several, but I don't have the overview there, some may overlap with later Monk in Paris editions done in collaboration with the Monk family), Art Blakey (two very nice doubles from the same night in 1961), Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band (pretty much essential), Miles in 1973 (pretty cool if you enjoy electric Miles!), Oscar Peterson (three of them, but I guess none really essential), Jimmy Giuffre (an amazing single disc - he got booed as well, the Paris audiences were rowdy back then!), the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band (essential!), Count Basie (nice, but not essential for sure, a double from 1959/62 and more from 1972, of which I have but Part 1 in the third incarnation), Ellington in 1965 (I love it, but I guess it's hardly essential), Dizzy (I have singles from 1960 and from 1965,) ... that's what I have, in addition to the Smith I mentioned.

There's a website about all of this that is again messy and mixes some of the above with the recent Fremeaux "Live in Paris" series that again offers the Miles (with basic booklet I heard), as well as the Count Basie (1959/62 in extended form - if you want that, go for the Fremaux), Monk (duplicating the "Live in France" from Riverside set but expanding it - it's not essential at all though), Sinatra, Ella, , Ray Charles (yeah!), Nat Cole/Quincy Jones (nice! there's another one by that pairing on the great "Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series" on TCB Records, that series is fully endorsed and highly recommended!), Les McCann (might cool!), MJQ, JATP (don't have these yet) and probably a few I forget.

Here's the link:
http://live-in-paris.fr

The make things messy and messier, they offer DLs of many of the items mentioned above, PLUS DLs of some exclusive stuff (the Lou Benett Trio w/Barney Wilen is one of the very few DLs I ever spent money on) ... and they mix in other "live in Paris" sets (I guess the Cannonball was previously out on Riverside but is public domain now ...)

Those Shelly Manne ones look nice.

Three hopefully essential live albums:

Miles Davis Sextet Live at Newport 1958 (the Coltrane-Cannonball-Evans group)
Dizzy Gillespie at Newport 1957 (with Lee Morgan, Al Grey, Pee Wee Moore's Doodlin', Benny Golson, Wynton Kelly, Mary Lou Williams, etc.)
Grand Reunion: Earl Hines Trio with Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge

From the used CD store
Miles Davis Aura
Horace Silver A Prescription for the Blues
Sonny Rollins Tenor Madness

From the liner notes, Aura might qualify for the Classical thread: music based on Miles's material but composed in a formal manner by Palle Mikkelborg, recorded in Copenhagen with Danish musicians. The only non Danes seem to Miles himself, abd John McLaughlin.

In the Rollins, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones provide the backing, and John Coltrane appears in the title track.

Amusingly, the Silver CD has a sticker announcing it is a promotional CD and that resale is unlawful and may be punishable by state and local law.

Not underrated in my house! A large chunk of his work as a leader is still available in two boxes:

[asin]B005QOR1ZM[/asin]
That's the Columbia albums, the studio part of which were previously released on Mosaic as well ... and Mosaic still has the Muse albums in print:
http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=255-MD-CD

There's quite a bit more of course, such as two Elektra albums (reissued by Wounded Bird), one on Enja, a Blue Note double disc of a live recording with Geri Allen at the piano, the two co-led Blue Note albums with Freddie Hubbard, two albums on Contemporary, a disc on Red, the live material on Highnote (four volumes of Woody Shaw Live and one first one so far of the group with Louis Hayes ... there's one one of the Shaw/Hayes band on TCB in their great Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series) ... and there must be more that I forget right now. And of course there's some more sideman stuff, too (Tyrone Washington!).

My dad being a jazz nut I had my share of Miles Davis when I was young, 50's Miles Davis that is, 'Round About Midnight especially. My dad teached me that after 60's or so Miles Davis sucks. He hates electronics, fusion, funk and all that. A few years ago I heard Bitches Brew and found it very interesting. I borrowed In A Silent Way from my dad's friend and liked it a lot. So, I found this twofer of In A Silent Way and On the Corner. Just listened to the latter on Spotify and it blew me away! So, this twofer I ordered just 5 minutes ago. Five pounds delivered!  :)

The track Black Satin sounds like drum 'n' bass, 25 years ahead of it's time. Amazing!

There are plenty of stories about "On the Corner", which is indeed pretty much unique, and an amazing album!

Miles was absorbing Bach, James Brown (whose "Cold Sweat" btw. is Pee Wee Ellis' take on "So What"), Stockhausen at that time ... I think Buckmaster stayed with Miles for a while (and practices the Cello suites), he is heard on the album as well, and he brought Stockhausen into the game, I guess. However, speaking of the beats I read somewhere (in Tingen's "Miles Electric" book I think) that what ended up on the record was more or less the fills - it was planned to add the actual beats later on, too, but then it sounded so good, they skipped that ... si non è vero ...

- Charles Mingus Sextet, Cornell 1964
- Gunslinging Birds. Mingus Big Band (post-Mingus, that is)
- Alone with Three Giants. Marcus Roberts
- See You at the Fair. Ben Webster, Hank Jones, etc.
- With Billie in Mind. Teddy Wilson
- Bean Bags. Milt Jackson, Coleman Hawkins
- Ain't But a Few of Us Left. Milt Jackson, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Grady Tate (what a lineup, wow)

Edison and Eldridge! (Not sure though I've heard th Gillespie ... and definitely haven't - and don't intend to - the Faddis, fourth in that mini series).

Speaking OP an Pablo and duets/meetings, those with Count Basie are wonderful - and I guess OP w/Ella ain't half bad (a change of pace from all the lovely Ella/Pass ones).

The Faddis one is bad. I respect his playing, but he has such a shrill, harsh sound - goes for loudness rather than expression - that it's physically difficult for my ears to listen.

Reading similar reviews and having similar feelings towards him I steered clear of it!

Isn't there actually one with Clark Terry? They collaborated earlier and later, guess that could be nice in just a duo setting, too.

That Bill Frisell recording is very good, imo.  I haven't heard the Charles Lloyd one you bought, which is odd since I usually listen to everything of his I see (will look for it).  Lloyd's work is always worthwhile and he's released some really fantastic records over the years.  The stuff since he came out of self-induced retirement has been uniformly excellent.

Following the five-star review on the Free Jazz Blog:

I have only a couple of Breuker's albums - and have yet to hear either of them (a constant refrain from me, it seems). So I've splurged for this retrospective. A bit pricey (a little over $100 with shipping from the Low Countries), so I hope I like it. :)

Ayler box looks very tempting.

It certainly does. I was aware of that release, but I never really knew how nicely appointed it is. Sigh. [Starts searching for reasonably-priced copy]

Arrived yesterday from Italy, after I ordered it from a Discogs seller last October (!!):

(https://img.discogs.com/DxPQ02_Lf_NpbpeKXGK4ielhvHg=/fit-in/300x300/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-4950395-1380361564-6666.jpeg.jpg)

Coti K.: Solesulsuolo

I really don't know what kind of music I'm going to get here, other than what I've heard from a sample on the Free Jazz Blog. But it was mentioned very favorably there, so I'm taking a chance on it. (The purchase from Italy was not very expensive - about $15, I think, including the overseas shipping.)

The Ayler box is amazing! But make no mistake, it does not tell the full story (well, it does in terms of words, there's a great book - and lots of memorabilia and stuff to go along with it), it's more like the apocryphs, a huge addition to the studio albums on ESP-Disk, various european labels, and Impulse. There is amazing stuff to be found in the box, but also some overlap with other releases (some of them OOP by now, maybe?).

Hat Hut has been releasing more Ayler, the Lörrach/Paris disc from the 1966 european tour (the one that shook the Beeb so much they destroyed their tapes of the London performance) has been out on Hat for a while, then they put out one more with two more 1966 set (one of which is in the Holy Ghost box, while there would have been one more set in circulation and never on any (semi-)official release ...)

The Copenhagen studio material was out on Ayler Records (formerly Swedish, now French ... do also consider their fantastic Jimmy Lyons box (http://www.ayler.com/jimmy-lyons-the-box-set.html)!), one of the two sets was duplicated in the "Holy Ghost" box, and I think now both are on another Hat Hut disc ...

Then there is Hilversum, out on various labels, including a few years ago ESP-Disk', but now also on Hat ...

Either way, the Albert Ayler website (http://ayler.co.uk/) is most helpful (and also cleans up the mess I'm making above re: Hat reissues ... I think Hilversum and one of the Copenhagen sets have been combined).

Yes, but I already had the official releases and this box contains some of his best performances, imo, of anything I've heard.  I got it for $74 and would suggest not paying more than $100, but I was lucky.  I have seen it for $200 and, in a few places, even higher.  Strictly for hard core Ayler fans.

Yes, it contains some amazing music, no doubt - just wanted to stress that it shouldn't be considered an alternative for "Spîritual Unity", "Vibrations", "Spirits Rejoice", "Slugs' Saloon" etc, but a mighty addition. The Cleveland live material has still not surfaced anywhere else, and I guess it alone is worth buying the box.

Not sure what I paid, it was one of very few pre-orders I ever did ... had the courier re-routed to my workplace at that time and still remember being called by reception about a delivery having arrived ... and going back to my desk to unwrap the huge box  ;D

As a Garner fan, I think Concert by the Sea is the least interesting one I've heard. All of my Garner is on LP--my favorites include Gems (Columbia), Solitaire (Mercury), and The Greatest Garner (Atlantic).

That Braxton looks interesting. Let us know your thoughts.

got this yesterday:

[asin]B07HHPZZQ4[/asin]

it's a reissue of a previous box - not sure if it's substantially different, this new one (costs 40€ on a.fr) has glossy mini-lp/foldout-covers, but no booklet/liner notes at all ... I've only owned two of the albums previously (the great one with Grappelli and Haynes, and Conférence de Presse in duo with Eddy Louiss), so this was a most attractive deal.

EDIT: just read in a review of the previous box (10 CD + 2 DVD, the new one has 12 CD + 3 DVD) that it was just a wrapper around the original albums, so it did include whatever liner notes/booklets that came with the original release (but ate up three times as much shelf space).

I'm also waiting for this:

[asin]B074BV39Y1[/asin]

a less attractive proposition for me, as I have both the first one and "Toot Sweet" with Lee Konitz, but it's cheap

... and I see there's a brand new one with a fine rhythm section, released today or tomorrow:

For early jazz, New Orleans groups, if you don't have the Louis Armstrong Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings, they are indispensable.  Also, any of the Joe "King" Oliver recordings from the early 20s.  Sidney Bechet with Clarence Williams, Kid Ory, Johnny Dodds, Jack Teagarden, Bunk Johnson (sadly none of his early stuff survives but his revival sides are still worthwhile) are some other names to check out.

I bolded a couple from your other group that I think are especially good.

Great to see some interest in early jazz - I've been delving into this period a lot over the last few years and really enjoying the process.

Kermit Ruffins is usually playing somewhere and has a "new style" traditional band.  Trombone Shorty is popular but has gone pretty much full on funk.  Try to find some of the brass bands, Rebirth BB, New Birth BB, Treme BB, N.O. Nightcrawlers - and since you will be there almost for the build up to Mardi Gras, you might be able to find Donald Harrison playing somewhere doing his Mardi Gras Indian brand of jazz.

If you know someone from there it's best - since the Quarter has turned into a tourist trap.  The best music is elsewhere but it's been so long since I've been, I don't know where the best clubs are anymore.

Wish I was going with you.

Thanks!! I've seen Rebirth here in Dallas and they are very cool. I plan to check the bands' schedules first before looking up specific clubs. And will use your list for reference. But some of them are definitely elusive to find online... (Am also a fan of Dr. Michael White. I like clarinet and there isn't a ton in the recorded mainstream after Bechet and Benny.)

A few other clarinetists: Pee Wee Russell, Jimmie Noone, Johnny Dodds, Barney Bigard, George Lewis, Edmund Hall, and the Original Dixieland Jass Band featured a good clarinetist, Larry Shields.  (There is some controversy associated with the ODJB because of incendiary comments made by Nick LaRocca (cornetist) about their role in the creation of jazz.  I try to ignore that noise and just enjoy the music, which is not to be ignored.)

Not to nit-pick, but NHOP died in 2005. Had one chance to catch him live, a weird concert hall trio performance with Martial Solal and Johnny Griffin (but not drums, the acoustics of the Zurich Tonhalle can indeed not deal with drums that well, it's not a nice place for jazz concerts anyway due to its acoustics). Pedersen was great that night, Griffin was half-way out of it (but his sound was stîll there, and that alone gave me shivers), while Solal was doing his stuff ... weirdly unengaging, though Griffin must have known both for a long time (he made a pretty good duo album with Solal, too). Anyway, the highlight of the night was NHOP playing a great solo on a 12-bar-blues.

Regarding early jazz: don't forget to check out Jelly Roll Morton! He may not have invented jazz, but his early sides are some of the finest of that era. Also check out Luis Russell's band:

The list is restricted to 2018 losses - Abercrombie (who died in summer 2017) was indeed a fine musician. Heard him live several times, the first concert was probably the best, a duo with Marc Copland in a quite intimate setting ... later I also heard the Charles Lloyd Quartet (with Abercrombie, Marc Johnson, Billy Hart), and then his own quartet (with Mark Feldman, Johnson and Joey Baron). Abercrombie's final album on ECM was very good.

The "Jazz from America" Vogue box is a weird one ... Vogue was distributing many US recordings in France (Europe?) at that time, and the box compiles some of these. There is a lot of fine music in it though, and the entire presentation is nice indeed.

I had some doubts even about the other Vogue box (https://www.amazon.fr/Jazz-disques-Vogue-Original-Albums/dp/B0087PI57K/), which is full of goodies (but only very few I didn't already have in previous editions) ... but I got it and it's such a nice set, I had to get the second one as well, although I'd have much preffered a second instalment of Vogue's own recordings.

The Cannonball is on its way to me (together with two other recent historical/archival releases: the Dolphy 1963 sessions set and the Etta Jones from Left Bank) - looking forward very, very much to it! At that time, Cannonball was really deep, even if his music is pleasant and crowd-pleasing on the surface ... in my house, he's one of the jazz giants.

A giant in my house too. It helps that my girlfriend likes Cannonball's speaking voice as much as I like his Alto sax, so she is always happy to let me put on a live (or "live") album of his.

Cool!

I initally fell in love with his playing with rather early records ("Quintet in San Francisco", "Nippon Soul", "Live in Europe" - all live obviously -, and of course "Somethin' Else", which I got even earlier as I considered it kind of a Miles record, which it partly is I think) ... but those mid/late 60s live albums are so hot, they are loser, yet somehow also more focussed, Cannonbally finally seems to channel what he learnt from playing side by side with Coltrane, but he makes his very own use of it, without compromising his own approach.

When Sony ran their huge Herbie Hancock box, which prooved endlessly fascinating (despite containing some rather doubtful music, next to masterpieces and so-so albums), I read somewhere about how fun it would be to get the Capitol output by Cannonball in a similarly complete fashion ... concept albums, live and semi-live albums, stuff with strings next to the smokin' albums that ahve been reissued - it would indeed be a total blast! I'm doing my best to snatch up whatever gets reissued in terms of later Cannonball.

At one point I had the original LP box from 1973, but it got away from me during my days of touring.  They put out with a second edition in 2011.  Mainly, and probably due to criticism that the first box excluded "the new thing" artists and fusion, they added a sixth disc to "rectify" that error in judgment by the original producers.

Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology

QuoteFollowing requests for an update to Martin Williams's Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz (1973), Smithsonian Folkways began the process of selecting music for a new anthology in late 2004. Over fifty acknowledged experts reviewed a list of 2,500 potential tracks and agreed that the set should represent the development of jazz through the 20th century. By March 2005, the Folkways staff had compiled a 300-page document explaining the positive and negative aspects of each potential selection.

Smithsonian Folkways formed a second executive committee of five members in June of the same year. To keep the price low the committee reduced their choices to 110 songs on six CDs. In making their decision, committee members concentrated on the historical impact of the recordings and significance of the musicians, rather than the recordings' commercial success.

After years of deliberation, the committee finalized the selections for the anthology. The committee then contacted over 30 authors to write articles for the recordings which pertained to their areas of research. Smithsonian Folkways released the anthology on March 29, 2011.

Probably the best single boxset for a jazz historical survey.

It was good! Girlfriend ran the marathon, which kind of sent us to bed early several times. Between that and my friends not believing that Kermit Ruffins and Walter Wolfman Washington were real names belonging to real people I wanted to see, it was a bit of a washout.

But I still got to see some good acts - the very talented Monday night group at Fritzel's (including Don Ewell student John Royen, a remarkable channeler of that style), a group called The Palmetto Bug Stompers, bassist Roland Guerin, some street playing from brass bands, and a surprising set by the Preservation Hall group at the marathon finish line. Surprising because it focused primarily on more contemporary style, a majority of the tunes originals.

Here in Florida we don't usually bother with the distinction. Palmetto bug is the overall euphemism.

Yeah the street music scene is huge there.
The marathon hired a group of brass bands to play on different stages along the race course. And when I say "stages," I of course mean the backs of pickup trucks. We camped out next to a Tulane student band - not so good - but they were replaced at 8am with a true pro outfit. I'm not sure who they were, which is too bad, because they were great - black uniforms with white military-style hats with black brims. We thought it was a six-piece group - two trumpets, two trombones, sousaphone, snare drum - until a half-hour later, when a clearly hungover bass drummer turned up on the wrong side of the running course, waited for a gap between runners to dash up to the band with his bass drum, and then had to borrow a harness and a drumstick from the Tulane kids. The snare drummer gave him a hard time  ;D ;D

When I was in New Orleans back in 2008 for a vacation, the Louisiana Music Factory was a store I frequented several times during the week. I became rather friendly with many of the staff members. I bought a good bit there: about 5-6 albums of Bud Powell I didn't own, several Duke Ellington's, and Horace Silver's In Pursuit of the 27th Man.

I recently bought a number of those cheap boxsets of multiple albums by some of my favorite jazz musicians:

Paul Chambers

Harry "Sweets" Edison

These are incredibly cheap, and focus on the prime years for each artist.

I have been enjoying the 1956-1959 Red Garland collection on this same label (I think--they're very cheap in any case!). Check that one out if you like him: 8 LPs on 4 CDs for $14. I will get the other ones eventually, but I like to take enough time to appreciate each one before buying more.

I am looking at getting the Johnny Griffin Riverside Collection 1958-1962 next. I knew virtually nothing about him until recently hearing some very nice tracks on KCSM.

Hi Alek,

Thanks. I only know one of the pieces on the Daniels CD (haven't even FLAC-ed it yet), from listening to KCSM 99.1 ("The Bay Areas Jazz Station", San Francisco). Probably about half or more of the jazz on my wish list is from listening to that station, especially the show The Jazz Oasis, which airs M-Sa 6-9 Pacific Time. Or you can stream it any time. The theme of the show is relaxing after a day a work, and during your commute home. They play a great mix of things--all relaxing, but not "soft jazz"/musak like Kenny G or anything like that.

My wife and I have been members for years: https://kcsm.org

They never sent a shipping confirmation email, but almost all the stuff in my post above arrived today. Three days is pretty good, especially considering our current circumstance and the total lack of communication from the company.

I forgot that I'd also ordered "Rockin' the Boat" (Jimmy Smith with Lou Donaldson). Wynton Marsalis' "Think of One" did NOT arrive in my box so presumably another is coming.

Just remembered the other CD I'd ordered from ArkivJazz: "Out Here," Christian McBride Trio. Even though the first box arrived super quickly, if they don't at least tell me when the other two CDs will ship, I probably won't order from them again. Their selection is also quite limited, although they do have about a dozen 80s rarities I want.

I also suspect that the Stitt Plays Bird disc is a burned CD-R so not sure what's up with that.

Did they charge your card for what they shipped? Does Informed Delivery show anything?

This may be like the mess they had last on the classical side of the operation. Shipped me CDs, but did not charge my card until well afterward, and the shipping confirmation email doesn't go until the credit card gets charged. [But they always sent me the order confirmations right away. It was only the shipping email that did not get sent.]

The undisclosed CD-R thing has been happening increasingly often in jazz CD land. I haven't been nailed yet.
Many buyers demand their money back. Given what you've said about the seller, it's unclear how (if?) they'd respond.

Looks like they billed me for the full total, but now Think of One shows as backordered and Out Here as low stock. Maybe when I bought Think of One, they'd run out but didn't know it. Or, uh, something.

I actually often don't mind the CD-R thing because jazz, unlike classical music, has a scant reissue/remastering history. There are hundreds of great albums that were on CD in 1985 or whatever, and never printed again. I wish that some of the big labels would do mega box sets like in classical - Sony has done some but imagine, say, a complete Swingville box set - anyways, until that happens, I'll buy whatever copy exists. Or listen on YouTube.

Theoretically, your copy of Think of One might have been the last one.

Could be! They should put a "Last one!" sticker on it when they mail it...if they mail it.

Love LMF!  After seeing your post I went to the site and saw this one:

Modern Brass Bands 1990-2005 (3-CD Set)

It 's on Spotify, so I'm listening to it and enjoying it a lot.  All of the bands are on Spotify so I can also listen to the entire recordings from which the tracks were taken to create the 3CD set.

Thanks for the reminder of this great resource.

McBride's "Out Here" arrived today. Looks fun.

Started playing some of the stuff from my LMF package (Wendell Brunious' "In the Tradition") and scouting out another order. Let me know if you see anything irresistible there, San Antone.

I'd recommend this if it wasn't only available as a vinyl Lp: Jon Batiste – Chronology Of A Dream / Live At The Village Vanguard  But maybe it's available as a CD as well. I listened on Spotify and it's really good.

Also this one, Leyla McCalla – Capitalist Blues

This looks especially good, Tom McDermott is usually reliable: Tom McDermott & Aurora Nealand – Live at Luthjen's

Some more:
Evan Christopher & Fapy Lafertin – A Summit in Paris
Kenneth Hagans – Plays Traditional New Orleans Music

This looks to be an excellent compilation of early New Orleans Jazz: This is New Orleans Jazz (3-CD Set)

Nicolas Payton is also a very reliable artist:  Nicholas Payton – Relaxin' With Nick (2-CD Set)  The production is really nice, a real natural acoustic - of course, some great blowing by this group.  It's not all jazz, and includes some funk.  Dunno if that nixes it for you.

I've been touting this recently, just fantastic: Wynton Marsalis – Bolden: Music from the Original Soundtrack

Well, I could probably find many more, that site is the bomb.

Had to go to "the big city" a little over an hour away on business. Took the opportunity to visit my favorite brick/mortar store, well, actually the only CD/used CD/vinyl/book shop I know of within a reasonable distance. They had a lot of good mdse, but I only had a few minutes. Picked up 3 somewhat oddball but interesting used discs:

The two I've bolded are the ones I've listened to the most, although Bags & Trane is riddled with distortion because of flawed engineering.  Gerry Mulligan made several of these "Meets" records, my favorite is with Ben Webster and he also did an excellent one "Meets Monk."

You invested in some really good stuff.

A UK-born clarinetist who got caught up in New Orleans style trad jazz, moved to NOLA, and jammed with many of the old-timers starting in the 70s.

The West Coast stuff is worthwhile, but the bolded names are the best.  John Hurt is unique; acoustic blues with a gentle, finger-picking style that has a folky quality.

Yes. I own a fair number of NB releases (for instance, all 4 of the Rivers series once Braids arrives, the Moondoc Muntu box, the Wm. Parker Centering box and various singletons). But so far I've purchased only archival material as opposed to current/new recordings.

I have trouble posting NB images here, will just give links.

The three in the Sam Rivers series so far, and I expect good things of the fourth: http://nobusinessrecords.com/sam-rivers.html

I really like these two:

Jemeel Moondoc Muntu Recordings http://nobusinessrecords.com/muntu-recordings.html
The Group (Ahmed Abdullah - trumpet, flugelhorn/Marion Brown - alto saxophone/Billy Bang - violin/Sirone - bass/Fred Hopkins - bass/Andrew Cyrille - drums) Live: http://nobusinessrecords.com/the-group-live.html

The NB box sets are nicely documented with excellent booklets.

One of my favorite jazz albums of all-time. I'm quite a fan of Wheeler's music and he has done many other great albums (The Widow in the Window and Music for Large & Small Ensembles being particular highlights), but none of them have meant as much to me as Gnu High. Another ECM album that would come with me to the desert island is Jan Garbarek's Witchi-Tai-To.

I listened to a lot of (jazz) ECM back in the '80s to early '90s (Metheny, Corea, Jarrett and a few others), but slowed down for whatever reason and even developed some dislike for their "trademark sound". The pendulum swung back, and I've been listening to more lately.
Never heard any Kenny Wheeler (as leader) until a few months ago, when Music for Large and Small Ensembles really impressed me. Got his Black Saint/Soul Note box and have been meaning to add more of his ECMs.

Very nice. I've always been an 'ECM guy' as far back as when I was in my early teens. I think the first ECM album that I heard that impressed me (and still does) to no end was Ralph Towner's Solstice (another desert island recording for me). I never have been able to get into Keith Jarrett, but his work on Gnu High and his earlier work with Miles Davis and Charles Lloyd is an exception.

Can't disagree with you on Jarrett. Started listening to him because he was a Miles alumnus. I kept a couple of his old Euro quartet ECMs (Belonging and Personal Mountains) that are pretty good in places, but his long solo concerts (e.g. Koln, La Scala) wore out their welcome after a few listens and got culled. I stopped following his work as leader, but wouldn't avoid him as sideman with musicians I like.

One of the things that bothers me the most about Jarrett's solo albums is the audible groaning he does when he's improvising. I realize some jazz pianists do this from time to time like Monk or Oscar Peterson, but Jarrett's is so audible and distracting that I have to turn off whatever recording it is after about 3 seconds. I never have been a fan of solo jazz piano with the exception of a few pieces like Ellington's Single Petal of a Rose for example, which must be counted as one of the loviest pieces of music I've ever heard.

Yes, an awful lot of jazz pianists vocalise. I've kind of gotten used to it, because a couple I greatly admire (Bud Powell and Barry Harris) are pretty loud. But Jarrett bugs me the most by far. Powell is nearly over the line, but I have to let it go because he's such a legend.

I don't listen to Bud Powell very often. For the record, my favorite jazz pianist is Bill Evans and has been since my teens. When I listen to him, I'm completely in a different world altogether. No other jazz pianist has this kind of mental hold on me.

I think Booker Little, who died of kidney disease at a tragically young age, was a brilliant trumpeter. Have gradually been collecting recordings on which he plays.

I suppose you have these recordings in some iteration or other:

Recently, I undertook a little exploration into the Sonny Rollins discography ...
It was very satisfying to find some treasures there !  :)

Lol yeah, that's putting it mildly ... ;D

The albums he released in 1956 alone would be the envy of many other musicians' careers.

Sonny is still alive, but alas, unable to play anymore. :(

No worries. I'm glad you are taking my remark in good humor, which is how it was intended. Your English seems quite good to me.

You're exploring a period of his career with which I'm not too familiar, actually, and it reminds me that I need to look more into his '60s stuff. This one in particular sounds interesting - I like Han Bennink (also still alive), who is a bit of a comedian when he performs.

My Sonny Rollins collection is really 1950s-heavy. I have just a few (3? off the top of my head) '60s releases, not very adventurous ones at that, and nothing from later decades.
I was meaning to get that (recent) Dutch Resonance reissue, but it slipped my mind, as often happens. Thanks for the reminder.

GS and Count down are based on the similar chord progressions and he played different scales every 2-4 bars. The approach is totally opposite to Miles' modal approach and it made the album somehow significant. Coltrane's Sound may sound a little similar while I prefer it to GS.

A killer album and a favorite of mine from Miles, but beware there is an issue with this MFSL remaster. It has a tape glitch --- I believe on the first track of the first disc, but, now that that I'm thinking about it, I can't remember exactly where it was, but this has been a complaint made by not just me, but several people who have bought this MFSL issue. Anyway, I own all of the Miles MFSL releases and they all sound top-notch. I believe I own around 5 or 6 iterations of Bitches Brew in my collection. It's a long-standing favorite, but my favorite period of Miles is still his 'Second Great Quintet' --- Sorcerer is, in fact, my favorite Miles album. As for post-Bitches Brew, if you haven't checked out Get Up With It or Agharta, then please do.

I hope you're happy with the fidelity of this MFSL release.

The Encyclopedia Of Jazz: Swing Time (2008, Documents/Membran Entertainment Group)
I initially saw the entire 500 CD retrospective; each 100 CD set dedicated to an era (each disc within that dedicated to a single artist) sold as separate sets for $9.99 a piece at my local music shop. I walked away feeling it to be too wieldy to carry home. Then I saw the prices peeps were charging for this out of print collection. Went back and nabbed the Swing Time box. Much as I admire some Bg Band stuff I don't think I'd ever get through the entire 100 disc set (I've got an admittedly low threshold for that high decibel stuff). But Swing? Nothing like it. Took America out of the Depression doldrums and got em dancing again. You can still feel the magic listening to a lot of it today. I see that the entire set is up on ebay for $2,000. If I had my druthers, I'd buy it and donate the whole thing to my local library. They're in need of some love in these war-is-the-answer-to-everything times.

I bought the Big Bands, Bepop, and "Modern Jazz" boxes from a german label for $100 a piece, about 10 years ago. I did in fact give them to the international center in my school, and then play them continuously. I didn't know the two other boxes existed. I put Modern Jazz in quotes because it's just standard 50s and early 60s jazz (Miles Davis, etc.).

I think I have all of them, though in my case it's the Hawkins/Eldrige title that I think I may have with a different cover.

Love the Art Blakey title (it's got Clifford Brown after all), though mine definitely has the early CD-era cover. The one pictured here is the original cover which later CDs adopted.

Don't think I have this particular Charlie Parker issue, but whatever's on it, I have.

Of the visible names, the only ones I've seen live are Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Red Rodney. Surprisingly, I don't believe I've ever seen Horace Silver despite his longevity.
