Good, I needed something to do this evening.  8)

Purely orchestral? I see some vocal works in our list, John.

Hah! ;D No, it doesn't have to be purely orchestral, Greg, but the works you choose should have at least some kind of 'orchestral outlook' to them if that makes any sense.

These lists are always interesting to construct. I left out anything remotely choral and of course opera, but thought concertos and short works were fair game. In the spirit of fairness, I picked only one piece per composer.

Barber - Violin Concerto
Bartók - Concerto for Orchestra
Britten - 4 Sea Interludes
Copland - Symphony No. 3
Debussy - La Mer
Hovhaness - Symphony No. 2
Hanson - Symphony No. 2
Ives - The Unanswered Question
Mahler - Symphony No. 9
Poulenc - Concerto for 2 Pianos
Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet
Ravel - Piano Concerto in G
Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No.  3
Resphigi - Pines of Rome
Schoenberg - Violin Concerto
Shostakovich - Symphony No. 10
Sibelius - Violin Concerto
Strauss - Eine Alpensinfonie
Stravinsky - Rite of Spring
Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending

We have a few overlapping favorites, Dee Sharp. Great choices and, yes, the 'one work per composer' idea is certainly what I had in mind, although I didn't explicitly say so of course.

A sketchy version, only 1 work per composer, including concertos but not vocal works, yet trying to secure some variety stylistically:

- Mahler: Symphony 10
- Stravinsky: Sacre du Printemps
- Sibelius: Symphony 4
- Janacek: Taras Bulba
- Elgar: Violin Concerto
- Bartok: Music for Strings ...
- Ravel: Daphnis & Chloe
- Nielsen: Symphony 4
- Langgaard: Symphony 4
- Prokofiev: Piano Concerto 4
- Vaughan-Williams: Symphony 4
- Medtner: Piano Concerto 3
- Martinu: Symphony 6
- Shostakovich: Cello Concerto 1
- Pettersson: Symphony 8
- Henze: Symphony 1
- Takemitsu: Arc
- Pärt: Tabula Rasa
- Schnittke: Viola Concerto
- Nørgård: Piano Concerto, In Due Tempi

And with no concertante works:

- Mahler: Symphony 10
- Stravinsky: Sacre du Printemps
- Sibelius: Symphony 4
- Janacek: Taras Bulba
- Elgar: Symphony 1
- Bartok: Music for Strings ...
- Ravel: Daphnis & Chloe
- Nielsen: Symphony 4
- Langgaard: Symphony 4
- Prokofiev: Symphony 6
- Vaughan-Williams: Symphony 4
- Martinu: Symphony 6
- Shostakovich: Symphony 8
- Pettersson: Symphony 8
- Henze: Symphony 1
- Honegger: Symphony 3
- Hindemith: Symphony, Harmonie der Welt
- Pärt: Symphony 1

Yes, great list Karl and impressive linguistic skills (which Sibelius and Rachmaninov work is that?). I think I should have chosen 'Symphonic Ode' by Copland too - a wonderfully implacable, monolithic score. Langgaard's 'Sinfonia Interna' has probably the most beautiful and poignant opening of any work I know. I listened to the work right through earlier today. Also +1 for Martinu's 'Parables' another lovely score.

Later works perforce suffer an inventory/distribution disadvantage, of course.

There is a Wuorinen piece from 1988 I should like very much to hear, Machault Mon Chou, but I'm jiggered if I can find any recording of it.  And, of course, I wonder if the première doubled as Final Performance.  (Thus far, I mean, to be sure.)

Occasionally, one will even still hear Debussy´s La Mer being labelled as a piece of "new music" (not here, though :) ).
That somehow the craft quality among composers should have been going down doesn´t hold water.

Why participate in these kinds of polls if all you're going to do is ignore the OP's request and do whatever you want? I mean if you want to list 100 favorite 20th Century works, then create your own thread, but, out of respect for my own wishes, and looking at other people's lists and how they kindly have obliged me, the least you could do is narrow your choices down.

I am one of these people who could not answer such a question.  I would fine it extremely difficult to list just twenty works.  I still like this thread because I found some interesting new works to check out and I want to thank all of the fine recommendations that have been made  :)

P. S. I anyone is interested as a band junkie I could come with a list of twenty concert band works.

I would agree with almost every one of these choices! We have very similar tastes. Miaskovsky's Symphony 17 is arguably his greaest although I chose No.6 (the longest) and might just as well have chosen No.21 (the shortest). The Barber is my favourite work by him. I'd probably have gone for Prokofiev Symphony 6 but the slow movement of No.5 is very special. Still, terrific choices.

See, this is a toughy for me. I still feel a sort of social pressure to include late romantic symphonies, but I would so much rather it be all about the wonderful post-1950 works that not everyone knows. Yes, I like Mahler, Sibelius, and Nielsen too.

Mahler: Symphony No. 6 (1904)
Webern: Passacaglia (1908)
Ravel: Daphnis et Chloe (1912)
Debussy: Jeux (1912)
Berg: Three Pieces for Orchestra (1915)
Prokofiev: Symphony No. 2 (1925)
Bartok: Piano Concerto No. 1 (1926)
Copland: Short Symphony (1933)
Schoenberg: Violin Concerto (1934)
Stravinsky: Symphony in C (1940)
Sessions: Symphony No. 2 (1946)
Messiaen: Oiseaux exotiques (1955)
Stockhausen: Gruppen (1957)
Ligeti: Atmospheres (1961)
Babbitt: Correspondences (1967)
Takemitsu: A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden (1977)
Gubaidulina: Offertorium (1980)
Boulez: Notations I-IV (1984)
Kurtag: Stele (1994)
Carter: Symphonia Sum fluxae pretium spei (1995)

That was difficult.  Several of the works I've chosen are not even my favorite orchestral piece by a given composer, but I wanted a mostly even representation of the entire span of the century...(and many apologies to Sibelius!)

Some other composers, like Janacek, were left off because they did far better work in chamber, vocal, or operatic music.

I enjoyed your list, and I enjoyed your notes. A number of people have included concertante works. I am not saying either that they were wrong to do so, nor that my list would have been at all easier had I done so.  8)

In some threads, you look at the lists which others compile, and you hope to find duplication of your own choices., thinking, Oh, here's someone who agrees. In this thread, however, I rejoice to find works in the lists of others for which I had no room in my own.

Indeed.  It was a rich century, and there are plenty of strands which I admire but left off my own list for one reason or another.  There certainly was fine music written by Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Nono, Berio, Saariaho, and others that I couldn't fit in here, without intending anything negative about their works.

I enjoyed looking at Mahlerian's list for the same reason. Apart from the Mahler and Ravel and a few others I know very few of the works there although I think that these are the works that I should get to know better.

Yes, I have noticed that too. Additionally, we are both great fans of the symphonies, especially the late-Romantic ones.

On the other hand, I have seen great examples of other participants here that I could not include, but it is also very refreshing to see other compositions that are not so familiar with me.

Considering that most of my classical leanings are late 19th to mid 20th Centuries, it would be a difficult list for me to make without question.

Delighted to hear that Sarge - I was worried that you wouldn't like it. The slow movement is my favourite but increasingly I like the whole work - especially for the possible glimpses of a troubled soul beneath the academic surface.

I could not come up with just twenty but if I did the following works would be on the list that have not yet been mentioned (I did a search.  I apologize if I made any mistakes  :-[  )

Schuman: Symphony No. 3
Piston: Symphony No. 2
Walton: Variations on a Theme by Hindemith
Carter: Variations for Orchestra
Barber: Symphony No. 1 (I noticed several mentioned some of his other works including the Symphony No. 2)
Britten: Sinfonia da Requiem
Lutoslawski: Concerto for Orchestra

I am stunned that I could not find the Hindemith Symphonic Metamorphosis.  I have performed this work and it is awesome.

There are three living composers who have composed works that really excite me that I do not think have been mentioned: James MacMillan, Richard Danielpour and Kalevi Aho.  I better stop before I come up with a fourth or fifth or sixth or.... I give up.  ::)

To the bolded text: it's not really a question as to whether something has been mentioned, but, rather, a work is actually your favorite. This goes for everyone who can't assemble a list: this isn't a competition --- this is about YOU and no one else.

I preferred the First over the Second.  Even though there is some fine music in the Symphony Barber hated it.  There is a very informative article about it in Wikipedia and it confirms what I have read about it in other sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._2_(Barber) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._2_(Barber)).  If memory serves me I think he used parts of the first movement in his Opera Anthony and Cleopatra.

Off the top of my head:

Barber - Violin Concerto
Janacek - Sinfonietta, Glagolitic Mass
Kabelac - Mystery of Time
Lloyd - Symphony No 5
Lutoslawski - Concerto for Orchestra
Martinu - Symphony No 2, Symphony No 4
Nielsen - Symphony No 3
Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet
Rachmaninov - Symphony No 2
Ravel - Daphnis et Chloe, Piano Concerto in G, Left Hand Piano Concerto
Rouse - Flute Concerto
Shostakovich - Piano Concerto No 1
Sibelius - Symphony No 5, Symphony No 7
Vaughan Williams - Symphony No 3, Symphony No 5

I quickly came up with 19, then foundered trying to decide on #20. Ultimately chose Rouse since nobody's mentioned Rouse.

Contenders for the 20th spot: Holmboe Viola Concerto, Elgar Symphony No 2, Copland Billy the Kid (complete), Fantasia on Themes by Thomas Tallis, Rautavaara Canto IV, Gershwin An American in Paris, Glass Symphony No 3, Shostakovich Symphony No 9, Martinu Oboe Concerto, Kernis Musica Celestis (arr. from his String Quartet No 1), Ibert Divertissement

To my delight and bit of a surprise, all of these choices could have been mine, except for Lloyd (whom I never really tried) and Rouse (never even heard it). Conclusion is evident: I should try Rouse.  ;D

A very nice list indeed. I will say that given that your avatar is Copland, I was a bit surprised to see his Music for a Great City on your list considering this is a work that is seldom mentioned (not that this belies how fine of a work it indeed is). The second movement Night Thoughts is one of Copland's most exquisite utterances IMHO.

1897 could be considered a year within a stylistic movement that can certainly be described as post-romantic, but it depends on the piece. Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun is certainly something composed in a style that can be considered post-romantic, but belonging to the 'wrong' century. Pieces by Elgar, Rachmaninov, Mahler, Puccini, Strauss etc. might have more in common stylistically with late 19th century Romantic tendencies than they do with the defining movements of 20th century composition.

They won't all be under 10 minutes. I should have included William Schuman's 'Prayer in Time of War' (1943) which I have recently discovered - fine work but 15 minutes.
I'm curious about the Vagn Holmboe Dolphin work in your list and agree with many of your selections such as VW, Revueltas, Moeran and Nielsen.

I'm sure I forgot some, but these were the first 20 that I came up with:

1901, Scriabin - Symphony No. 2
1902, Sibelius - Symphony No. 2
1902, Mahler, Symphony No. 5
1904, Sibelius - Violin Concerto
1905, Rimsky-Korsakov - Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh (Suite)
1907, Sibelius - Symphony No. 3
1907, Rimsky-Korsakov - Le coq d'or (Suite)

1910, Stravinsky - Firebird Suite
1911, Sibelius - Symphony No. 4
1913, Stravinsky - Rite of Spring
1919, Sibelius - Symphony No. 5

1924, Poulenc - Les biches
1929, Walton - Viola Concerto
1937, Shostakovich - Symphony No. 5
1945, Shostakovich - Symphony No. 9
1951, Shostakovich - Symphony No. 10
1971, Shostakovich - Symphony No. 15
1974, Schnittke - Symphony No. 1

Decided to sort it by year. Looks heavily biased towards first half of the century. Would be interesting to see what my list would be for second half.

Hehe, indeed I could. There's secretly more Sibelius in my list, but it's spread out so it's harder to tell.

Already began tallying up the points, although I would like to get at least 25 lists before I start revealing them. I think we are up to 16 lists so far.

Thank you to everyone participating! This is a series I may continue when this is over, thinking of Greatest Concertos, Greatest Chamber Works, Greatest Sacred Works, etc...

... your choices are just ravishing! I'm curious because you chose the Atterberg's 2nd instead of the 3rd, which is still more interesting. The Hanson's 2nd has to be one of the most beautiful American symphonies imho, I love it! The Shostakovich's cello concerto 1 is also an obligatory favorite of mine, and the Schnittke as well. About the miscellaneous ones, I should include the Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances, I had that clear omission. I have to get acquainted some of yours (von Koch, Escher, Liebermann).

The Atterberg Third is probably a "greater" work than the Second, but I gave a slight edge to the Second in my preferences just cause it's so gloriously over-the-top (in a good way ;D) and has some great melodic writing. Don't get me wrong though, I love the Third with all of my being. Heartily agreed re. Hanson's Second - it's one of the most unfairly maligned works in the repertoire. Nowadays, most of the major American orchestras consider it to be "beneath them", and only regional and youth orchestras program it with any regularity.

Glad you liked those works Caesar.  :)
Sainton was, IMHO, a most interesting composer and largely forgotten.
'Nadir' is a very moving, short 'despair turning into defiance' war-time work. Sainton wrote it, apparently, after witnessing the death of a young child during a bombing raid on Bristol during the Second World War. His 'The Island' is very Baxian and there is his fine movie score for 'Moby Dick' - now on Naxos.

I forgot Church Windows, silly me. And having rediscovered The Isle of the Dead under Svetlanov blew me away.

The only works I don't know at all are the Salmenhaara and the Morgan.

And I forgot any Shostakovich symphonies, although I did include VC No.1
A strong recommendation for Salmenhaara (Harry is also a fan) and David Morgan (Lyrita CD).
Svetlanov's 'Isle of the Dead' is terrific. I have it on a CD coupled with his equally fine Symphony No.1.

No, I meant Bruckner, although I'm a great admirer of Mahler's 9th Symphony as well.
PS Oh, I see what you mean! Bruckner's is 19th Century. Silly me. I'll think of something else.

Bartok Concerto for Orchestra
Sibelius 2,4-7

I couldn't even bother to think of such a list nowadays as I don't listen to a lot orchestral music. I do still listen to ballets and concerti as I seem to be drawn them more than symphonies. I listen to more solo piano, chamber music and songs/lieder/melodies, but, occasionally, I'll listen to an opera.

Off the top of my head:

Barber - Violin Concerto
Janacek - Sinfonietta, Glagolitic Mass
Kabelac - Mystery of Time
Lloyd - Symphony No 5
Lutoslawski - Concerto for Orchestra
Martinu - Symphony No 2, Symphony No 4
Nielsen - Symphony No 3
Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet
Rachmaninov - Symphony No 2
Ravel - Daphnis et Chloe, Piano Concerto in G, Left Hand Piano Concerto
Rouse - Flute Concerto
Shostakovich - Piano Concerto No 1
Sibelius - Symphony No 5, Symphony No 7
Vaughan Williams - Symphony No 3, Symphony No 5

I quickly came up with 19, then foundered trying to decide on #20. Ultimately chose Rouse since nobody's mentioned Rouse.

Contenders for the 20th spot: Holmboe Viola Concerto, Elgar Symphony No 2, Copland Billy the Kid (complete), Fantasia on Themes by Thomas Tallis, Rautavaara Canto IV, Gershwin An American in Paris, Glass Symphony No 3, Shostakovich Symphony No 9, Martinu Oboe Concerto, Kernis Musica Celestis (arr. from his String Quartet No 1), Ibert Divertissement

Barber - Violin Concerto
Janáček: Glagolitic Mass
Janáček: Sinfonietta
Kabelač: Mystery of Time
G. Lloyd: Symphony No. 5
Martinů: Symphony No. 4
Nielsen: Symphony No. 3
Lutoslawski: Concerto for Orchestra
Prokofiev: Symphony No. 1
Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 2
Ravel: Piano Concerto for the left-hand
Roussel: Bacchus et Ariane
Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 1
Sibelius: Symphony No. 5
Stravinsky: Petrushka
Szymanowski: Symphony No. 4, "Symphonie concertante"
Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on Themes of Thomas Tallis
Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 5
Walton: Symphony No. 1
Weinberg: Cello Concerto

Honorable mentions:
Copland: Organ Symphony
Hindemith: Mathis der Maler symphony
Pierné: Cydalise
Piston: Symphony No. 2
Rautavaara: Symphony No. 7
Respighi: Trittico botticelliano
R. Thompson: Symphony No. 2

Still love all my favorites from 2017 (12 of 20 carried over) so we can add the Rouse flute concerto, Ravel two-hand concerto, American in Paris, Shostakovich Symphonies 6, 9, & 10, and Kernis musica celestis to the honorable mentions category. Also shoutouts to Ligeti Concert romanesc, suites condensed from Janáček operas and Der Rosenkavalier, the Martinů and R. Strauss oboe concertos, and Rautavaara's final piano concerto (which maaaay have been written after 2000?).

Nice to see a (sort-of) vote for Copland's Organ Symphony. I agree with many of your other choices, although very recently I've come to enjoy Piston's 6th Symphony (BIS recording) just as much as No.2. I'd have gone for Nielsen's 4th, 5th or 6th symphonies rather than No.3.

What a great list Kyle! I'm glad to see that Damase is still there! I agree with more or less all of your list.

Lots of fun and great music there, Kyle! The only ones that escape from me are the Carreño and Canteloube.

The Carreño is a marvelous set of symphonic variations by an all-but-unknown Venezuelan composer, rather Braga Santos-like in its uplifting, colorful style: https://youtu.be/LCoC0cyyPFw

Oh, you must get to know the Canteloube Chants d'Auvergne! Some of the most ravishing vocal music I know. Not only is Canteloube's vocal writing exquisite, but so is his orchestration, complete with a wonderful orchestral piano part that conjures up images of the glint of sunlight on water.

I don't think he'll be going anywhere anytime soon! 8)

Most of these works would be on my list.  This would be shorter than my list.  This is why I do not play games like these.  I have a lot more that just twenty.

Heck.  I could come up with 20 works by William Schuman.

New England Triptych
Violin Concerto
Song on Orpheus
American Festival Orchestra
Concerto on Old English Rounds
Credendum
In Praise of Shahn
Judith
Night Journey
Prayer in the Time of War
Umdertow
To Thee Old Cause
3 Colloquies for Horn & Orchestra
Symphonies 3-8 (Not that crazy about 9 & 10)

OK.  We will throw in the 9th to make it twenty.

Interesting! I've increasingly come to appreciate William Schuman's music, especially symphonies 3 and 6, Prayer in Time of War and the New England Triptych. I must look out for the others.

I guess I could do 20 favourites by Vaughan Williams

Nine symphonies
Job
Double Piano Concerto
Five Variants on Dives and Lazarus
Tuba Concerto
Three Portraits from the England of Elizabeth
In the Fen Country
Norfolk Rhapsody
Old King Cole
Concerto Grosso
Harmonica Romance
49th Parallel
