I'm curious about pre-crackdown Soviet music. I've always been interested in Latin American music. And I've read some about Crawford-Seeger, but never heard her. Who are the ensembles on these discs?

What is on these discs?
Ah, thank you for the Russian curveball. Locked.
There are 4 Latino type cds I'm interested in, 2 from the Quartetto Latinoamerica, and the 2 Arditti. YOU WANT NAMES :o? (deflating sound)...They are all unfamiliar (and probably young) names-don't have the list here-but that is why I thought ALL 4 of them would make a great "when pigs fly" purchase. The Latinoamerica cds are obviously going to be slightly more friendly, but I heard the Arditti/Portugese album was totally charming (still, it's the most expensive one, on Etcetera). The "Mexico" cd I hear is more standard typical Arditti fare (which of course, isn't a bad thing).
I like that you skipped the normal stuff and went for some dark horses. Thanks.
Any more suggestions?
I ordered the Mossolov/Rosalvets/Knipper...$6!
And I just happened to find a "hopelessly" OOP Gerhard Staebler/Arditti disc...$6.50!

The one thing that stands out in this list is the Crawford Seeger quartet. If you don't have it, you should.

Any available recordings?
I have Arditti playing Crawford-Seeger on that famous Grammavision disc (find it on Amazon: Arditti 4). I was going to get THAT disc for the Johnston No.4 Amazing Grace.
Why not the Husa? Isn't No.3 (Pulitzer Prize 1968) supposed to have everything one could ask for?
The only reason I ask is because I've been in a Fine Arts Quartet frenzy lately.
And no one has mentioned the standard fare, Saint-Saens, Busoni, Wolf. I'll admit, with my...uh, budget....my list seems it would make anyone break out in hives! I do think I'll be going for the Saint-Saens: very nice easy listening for me.
Also, Arnold, Alwyn, and Rawsthorne just got into the running.
Just got Mossolov/Roslavets/Knipper. Check out review at ...please SQs me... thread.
It's time for more 'Tell Me What to Buy'.
Seriously, I can't even think of where to begin:
post 1950.
unstoppable juggernaut type orchestral works.
stranger-than-fiction String Quartets or Chamber Music.
Leslie Bassett CRI
Wellesz SQs
Dallapiccola Apex
Stockhausen (too expensive right now)
Dumitrescu/Radulescu??
various cheapo CRI discs... guilty pleasures all!!
Basically, I'm at the 'buy things I'm really not interested in because I'm bored' stage. Help!!

There is a really good Wergo disc outside of the Verlag label which has Kontra-punkte, Refrain, Zeitmasze & Schlagtrio. There are also really good Wergo discs of Kontakte & Tierkreis. Get these. Get the Eotvos Gruppen/Punkte recording if you don't have that. Get the great Kontarsky Klavierstucke I-XI set which has the live electronic Mikrophonie works thrown in for good measure. Get the exceptional ECM album of Michaels Reise. Buy the Helicopter String Quartet documentary which is entertaining.

IT'S THAT EOTVOS DISC THAT (whoops) all of a sudden jumped a few dollars right as I was considering it on Amazon (I see they've dropped it all of a sudden as OOP). Otherwise, I'd rather have the one with

It's either the last of the Ssotakovich research project- which of course won't yield any actual New Music. There's No Xenakis... ever... waaah...
It's pretty much 1913-1983 that I'm interested in... either "pre-1950s" styled music, or some meaty snyprrr-petrarch-culver-james type of High Modernism...
1) sALLINEN CPO Box
2) -some other super Symphonies.....
3) maybe some extraordinary Szymanowski + Feldman + Stockhausen Piano Music?????? super wild baby,... super wild
4) Novak Piano Quintet
5) SQs???
6) spiky violin + piano
7) any standout concertos?

Yes, I prefer 'Persepolis' to just about any other Electro-Acoustic music. They said merzbow was the only other real option, but he just doesn't have what Xenakis had.- I mean- there's a LOT od Merzbow- I'd certainly be willing to take recommendations!

pocketbook happy, me bored... this is what I've gotten here on this last spurt:
Miereanu Orchestral Works (Salabert)
Harris Sym. 11 (Albany)
Harris Syms. 8&9 (Albany)
Schnittke Viola Cto. (RCA)
Schnittke Sym.3 (BIS)
Harris Sym.5, Violin Cto. (Louisville)
Prokofiev Sym.2, Cello Sym. (Chandos)
I'm just holding off on the Sallinen Box, the Borodin/'Bovine' Box, Fitzwilliam Box,... all the $30 items...
NOT IN THE MOOD FOR AVANT GARDE!!!!- all my favs are leaving me cold- Donatoni, Castiglioni, etc etc... Arditti...
PETRASSI PIANO CONCERTO seems to be at the top of the list at the moment....
BOOORED
BOOOOOOOOOORED
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORED
Well, the Bashmet performance of Schnittke's Viola Concerto is without a doubt the best one I've heard (own four recordings of the work). The Schnittke 3rd on BIS with Eri Klas is also top-shelf. Buy both. 8)

Yea, mm, eee, oh, ah,... I just can't see that one happening. If I'm getting Brahms, I'm done! But I appreciate the curve ball!! Scriabin, maybe? I don't know what kind of pPiano Music I could go for tight now- the only item on The List would be Holliger's Partita. I'm pretty satisfied with my keyboard music.
Could use some more modern harpsichord.....
No organ right now please.

You've answered your own question. You need Holliger's Romancendres, and you can get it on the same CD as the Partita.
How well have you delved into Klang? Or late Nono? Both cosmic and not noisy things there (Himmelfahrt for example.)
If you're really up for it why not try something completely unexpected like Byzentine chant? Or music for Lyra Viol? Both cosmic, neither noisy.

my Byzantine phase @1997... not much survived...
Klang, no- (KHS, right?)- I guess that's an option
Nono, yes
Thinking about some Hughes Dufourt... anything new by Roger Reynolds?... nothing interesting by the Arditti, though I could go for the Ferneyhough set... Barrett?...
Yea, I've pretty much said goodbye to pre-1904 music... I'm getting waaay picky... thinking Wyschnagradsky(sp.) might be too doleful for me... microtonal in general...
cosmic = Ives in my mind.... how is that 'Universe Symphony'?
Aye, I just want to buuuy something :o
yea, maybe Holliger, he's my go-to.... what about the Violin Concerto?
wasn't really into Petrassi Piano Concerto......... Nordic Composers have left me cold all of a sudden..... oh, the drama!!! ::)
Another idea, really I'm thinking I like it so you'll like it, is the Alti Heimir Sveinsson 2nd piano trio. There's a recording by The Hyperion Trio.
Have you heard Presque Rien? If not, it's quiet, and IMO cosmic. I love early Ferrari.
Jonathan Harvey's Bhakti? It's kitsch like Jeff Koons.

Yes, that Ferrari is an outre, yet appropriate, choice, I'll re-listen.
Well, here's what I got so far:
1) Lindberg SONY w/Cello Concerto, Fresco
2) Norgard/Ligeti Chandos Violin Concertos
3) Denisov Erato Symphony
4) Ives Universe Symphony... haven't chosen one yet
5) Dufourt Timpani Le Cypres Blanc viola concerto... spectral
That seems representative of where I'm at at the moment. I would consider these "classic" choices... things that probably should have been here all along...I just don't even know what a "radical" choice would be...

SO BORED
I just picked up the Nonkin disc with Babbitt and Finnissy, first purchase for most of the year so far. I want something as dense as Babbitt- but Babbitt has a way of making many notes sound not-angsty, whereas others with lots of notes tend to go Bergian.
I still haven't gotten any new Ferneyhough. But I'm not ready for a lot of String Quartet at the moment. Also expensive.
I'll still ponder the Brahms,... maybe at the library???...
Yea, Babbitt ruins a lot of Composers for me. But his Discography is small. And I haven't found his heir...
Roger Reynolds on the radar...
Sallinen sunk for me, I never got the Box...
I want something like messiaen, but not so four-square... Japanese?... Nishimura?....
Yes, I still haven't checked out Late Stockhausen...
WOW, I'M STILL AT THE SAME PLACE NOW FOR A FEW YEARS.... STUCK STUCK STUCK....

The Barraqué concerto for clarinet and vibraphone. (I've been really enjoy Theraps recently.)
The Britten nocturnal (the guitar thing.) no, maybe not.
Or what about really getting your mind and should round Gesualdo's responsories? They've defeated me but you may be able to unlock their secret.

I've had the Barraque for decades, yes, might dust that off...
I've always enjoyed that Bream 20th century recital, yes,...
Gesualdo came with my chant phase back in the late 90s... yea, mm,... think I'd rather try Stockhausen first, lol!!
Yesterday i took Dutilleux Sym2 with me, yes, quite a boisterous and fun affair, very gilded.
Wasn't impressed by samples of Norgard's 8th... 7th I liked better...
Petrassi Piano Concerto... no thanks....
I think I'm probably just happy with what I have... I have a feeling my problems are more gynecological in nature... errrrr....
Something tells me you need more Nystroem in your collection. Am I wrong?
ahhh, here we are again...
1) I seem to be in an American Piano Music mood lately,- 1/2 light and fluffy, 1/2 burly, gnarly....
2) Considering the Lindberg/Ondine Box... Tiensuu... Kokkonen 1-2 (Sakari)... I seem to be stuck on "Nordic Orchestral"...

George Flynn, Trinity. Get the recording by Fredrik Ullen.
And then there's Charles Tomlinson Griffes.
Piano works by Dane Rudhyar - interesting, eccentric, astrology-fixated & Scriabinesque fellow, but not much recorded it seems.
And of course, those of Ruth Crawford Seeger (the Preludes, Piano Studies etc.)
1) Aperghis: 'Avis le tempete'
An exhausting "opera" thingy... I listened to a bit on YT and just didn't need the stress...
2) Stravinsky: 'Persephone'
Don't really feel like listening to a tenor, though I like the music,... eh, I just can't get excited here...
3) Stravinsky/ Bartok: Piano Music (Ranki;Apex)
Again, I like his delicate touch, but I have trouble getting excited over the music.
4) Stravinsky: 'The Flood/ Requiem Canticles...' (DG)
I can generate just a touch more excitement for this... I don't know why I just can't get excited over Igor?!?!
5) Malipiero Piano Music
I like his Impressionistic early stuff... but I lose interest in the quirky/uppity stuff.
6) Bartok Piano Muisc: Kocsis Box
I have been trying to make myself believe here, but I just don't think I can handle some of the simpler stuff. And, sampling a few of the 'Romanian' this and 'Hungarian' that, that most of Bartok's output here seems to be in the miniature range. I'd be more interested in 1-2 discs of the "important" stuff. Don't know if I can deal with 'Mikrokosmos' and 'For Children'. I know you guys are going to try to convince me here, but WHY? After Modern Piano, it has been hard to go back to pre-1951, even if it's scintillating ,... I dunno, give it a try...
7) Henze??
How are the Piano Concertos and Violin Concertos? anything other than the Symphonies?...
8) I'm really scraping it here... I almost feel bad for not wanting anything...
Nono: 'O Sole...'
Massive opera thingy, probably more angst than I want to deal with right now. How bout '...Sospeso'?
I guess I'm good?

I've sniffed it a few times, I guess I fear the "less than Philips" sound??... yes, forgot about Busoni and Scriabin...
\
My main thing with the piano now is SOUND, hence the Kocsis even though I don't seem to be craving Bartok. I AM craving that sort of Philips Piano Sound.
Mustonen is the kind of pianist who has that ridiculously refined touch (Pogo, Kocsis, Ranki?)... was listening to his Stravinsky concertos... I might even get Beethoven for the Mustonen, lol.
If you "get" the type of pianist I'm looking for, I might even get "doo-dah" just to hear the sound and playing.

Great question!
Only an indirect answer . . . the Hungarian cimbalom is similar to a hammer dulcimer.

Indeed, sounds like dulcimar, and very effective. Thank you very much. Long time ago I heard dulcimar in an orchestrated music of Satie, but had no idea what recording that was.
There is another earlier Stravinsky work (1916) that uses a Cimbalom in its orchestration
Renard
(Ба́йка про лису́, петуха́, кота́, да барана́. Весё́лое представле́ние с пе́нием и му́зыкой – The Fable of the Vixen, the Cock, the Cat and the Ram.)
Orchestration:
Singers: 2 tenors, 2 basses (in the pit with the other musicians, the mime / dancers on stage.
flute (doubling piccolo), oboe (doubling cor anglais), clarinet (doubling Eb clarinet), bassoon, 2 horns, trumpet, percussion (timpani, triangle, tambourine with bells, tambourine without bells, cylindrical drum, cymbals, bass drum), cimbalom, 2 violins, viola, cello and double-bass.

a film of a staged version conducted by Pierre Boulez
https://www.youtube.com/v/nM4zPeC545w
...another staging, pretty fantastic, fun, and wonderfully energetic; lacking the cimbalom, upright piano with tacks in the hammers is a rather clever substitute.

Best regards
P.s. check youtube for cimbalom; there are a good number of traditional Hungarian pieces there. Look also under Concerto for Cimbalom. there are a few of them!
Thanks a lot. They all are interesting works!

Ah, now I remember: I had gotten my first ever Opera last year, 'Die Soldaten', which made me look around at Nono and Stravinsky, and then I got on the Stravinsky tip around February. Well, I'm certainly not feeling desperate enough to go Opera hunting, though, still, Nono doooes beckon.
Ghedini and Frank Martin are only on the radar because of Stravinsky. Stravinsky has ruined a lot of music for me! I'm having trouble caring...
The Nono just seems so tumultuous, and I don't know if I'm feeling like tackling Operas of High Modernism./// I still can't stand Opera singing to a fault...
That leaves the other generic genres I've mentioned before on here,... I noticed Henze was on there, whom I have been listening to for three days now (but I don't know how willing I am to buy something). Malipiero Piano Music,... eh, maybe, maybe not.
Ferneyhough String Quartets may have to be saved for another season: I'm just not ready for him just yet.
Xenakis: NOTHING :( :'(
Not ready for Brahms Piano Music,... or,... am I? (please, one sample of the best ya got)
Ancient Music? Nah,...
Lassus/Zelenka? mmm,... eh,... can you find me some minor keys? Otherwise, probably not right now.
AS LONG AS IT'S NOT DOUR
After that last post from snyprrr, this thread should be titled "Tell Me What Not To Buy". :)

I'm just fishin',... I had thought of Villa-Lobos Symphony No.7,... maybe I'm ready for the 'Bachianas'?,... I did want to try Symphonies 10-12,...
You know, ... fishin'
Btw, cimbalom (dulcimer) can be heard on Heinz Holliger's violin concerto
and with Peter Eötvös who wrote a concertante piece for dulcimer and (chamber) ensemble ("da capo", 2014) - saw it performed in late June at Tonhalle Zurich but thought it was a bit of an easy win in that it was a bit too obviously funny and crowd-pleasing.
And Patricia Kopatchinskaja has her father play cimbalom on her great disc "Rapsodia" (naïve, 2010) - here he is in 1976, playing the same piece they do as an opener of that CD:

I finally purchased the Ghedini SONY disc, conducted by Daniele Rustioni. The samples reveal quite a powerful and seductive selection of Late Works. Just the fact that SONY went there was enough for me! ;)

Is it a happy place?
BOUGHT:
Skalkottas Chamber Music 'Sonata Cycle': Holligger&Co. (Philips) 49mins.
French Oboe Music: Saint-Saens, Poulenc, Koechlin, Dutilleux, Bozza (Virgin) 79mins.
I seem to be flirting with boredom here after that epic IgorMania2017 marathon... everything's relating to Igor circa 1923 for me right now... and, Avant-Garde being a bit on the expensive side (can't find anything... the Skalkottas had been on the list for... ever)...
oy, is it French Flute Music next, LOL ?!?! huh??
oh please let me get away from the Harp,Flute,Strings...pleeeeeeez ??? :o ???

I don't remember how I got from there to Satie, but I haven't been able to get excited enough about Debussy to get any Piano Muisc Cds... Weissenberg, Bunin I liked, but the rest are typically expensive for snyprrr. (and I'm having a very hard time getting excited about Debussy)
oh what?
Ferneyhough...??....eh....SQs.....,mmmm.... that NEOS set has been a sore spot for a while now, but, expensive still....
I know, even I don't care. My wallet thanks you all, lol
