Title: Ron's Talking's Compositions
Post by: Rons_talking on June 04, 2017, 01:31:25 PM
Here is a new selection of my compositions (2-13-18) I continue to update them weekly. All have been composed in the past three years; some are lyrical and tonally oriented while others are more challenging.

Revising the interlude for the Sinfonia: https://soundcloud.com/ronald-roumanis/epilogue?in=ronald-roumanis/sets/sinfonia-18-for-11-players

Piano-wind quartet 1st piece: https://soundcloud.com/ronald-roumanis/apnowins?in=ronald-roumanis/sets/8-works-for-piano-and-4-winds

Finished on 2/4/18: https://soundcloud.com/ronald-roumanis/meditations-after-light
This is a work for 4 players that is quiet and calm in the Feldman/Webern sense (mostly ;))

Some interesting harmonies and rhythms. I rather enjoyed the "La La Land" piece in particular, but at a glance there is consistency among your uploaded works. If there is an issue for me, it's that MIDI mock-ups made based on performing scores don't tend to make for convincing accounts. I would consider giving these a little fine detail work, but I don't know how flexible scorewriters are in terms of letting you go beyond the score and into the numbers actually controlling everything (i.e.: into all the decisions which, in a performance, would be made reflexively by the performer). If your software allows you to change note parameters and tempi on a granular level it's definitely worth taking a little time to fine tune the rendering, especially if it will be your main means of representing your work in audio form until recordings are are available. Please do not take this as a criticism of the compositions themselves, it's just something I tend to notice when confronted with this particular application of MIDI, that's all.

Lastly, congratulations on the upcoming performances, and best of luck in your future efforts.

Thanks for the reply. As far as tempi and dynamics, my choices are limited in playback. But most of my music is not as full of markings as works of  a lot of modern composers. But your point is well-taken, and I'll see what I can add for the playback when I'm back home.

Wow! I just listened to the piano moods and La-La land piece. Those piano works are great little miniatures; your harmonic shifts and lyrical passages are moving. Are you a jazz player? I didn't have time to listen to the last chamber pieces but look forward to listening to them. I like new music that still has a tonal sound at times. I hope to hear a recording of a good player on the piano work.

I just listened to the Jungle symphony and really liked it (some parts were hard to hear), especially the second half. The mood shifts are so natural and evocative. Did you know Peter Racine Fricker? I saw the dedication.

The 9th Sonata was bad-ass. Really exciting in the outer movements. And the slow movement was lovely--again with the harmonic shifts. Nice work!

To answer your questions: Yes PRF was my first teacher after my Dad who was a jazz musician and composer. I was thinking about PRF when I wrote the ostinato that pop up from time to time. Thanks for the comments...

I presume there aren't many string players required at all, because of the chamber proportions? Is it solo strings or something like two or three per part?

2,2,2,1,1 would be satisfactory, though double that would be better. There's a lot of divisi. As I composed this while living on a remote island off the coast of western Canada (with no forthcoming performance plans) I was thinking in terms of "smallish" orchestra rather than chamber size. But that's flexible. ;)  I'm in the process of moving... probably to the Toronto area, and will have real musicians in the region.

I've just updated a list of my piano music.
https://soundcloud.com/ronald-roumanis/sets/piano-music

Included are Sonatas 4, 8, 14, and the finale of 5. Plus some preludes, etc.
S4 is sort of neoclassical, S8 is 1 movment, kinda tonal but jarring as well. S 14 is craggy on the outsides, and S5 3rd is wacky.

I hope you listen and comment...

Thanks! I'm not certain which piece you're referring to, but much of the piano music will be premiered this fall. I have only recently returned to an urban area after living on a remote island near the Alaska-Canada border for years...hence the automated performance.

Sometimes the Soundcloud recording delays playing the music...if you push the cursor near the beginning of the sawtooth "soundwaves" the music will start immediately.

I think you should send Triad a score or two for us to consider for our upcoming season.  Count on four singers per section, the singers are professional, so divisi is no problem, and if you have a passage for the occasional soloist that is easy to accommodate, too.  Unaccompanied, or piano accompaniment, is easiest to fold in.  Though if you have something for choir and clarinet, we can do that readily, too. I wouldn't absolutely say that non-sacred text is a preference;  only I know of some sacred works which are already on the slate for next season, so at present, non-sacred text may be preferred for balance.

My Three Places in New Mexico" is now on soundcloud. It's for wind quartet,  perc., piano. Why should all of the " Three Pieces" works be on the East? "Alamogordo" is inspired by its old atomic bomb testing site. I'm composing for a friend who directs a new music group.

Last month, I composed this work for chamber orchestra "Earth Tones"  (Sinfonia 14). It's in three movements and is comprised of wind quartet, Time, Glock, Vibraphone and Piano as well as 2-2-2-1-1 Strings (or double).  The 1st m. is called "Leaves", the second "Awakening" and the 3rd mov. is "Birds".   It was inspired by my moving from Campbell Island, north of Vancouver Island where my wife and I worked on an aboriginal reserve, to the city of Edmonton...a culture shock, but not in a bad way...Now I can work with live musicians! Here are 3 pages of the score (1st mov. ca. 2:45).

Of course, I'm jumping in at the middle with p.20, so I may be missing important cues.  Some initial thoughts:

  • At E it looks like the oboe and clarinet jar at an augmented (cl) or diminished (ob) octave, with the bassoon and flute respectively.
  • I don't know what the previous dynamic marking was . . . is the third eighth-note at E really where the timpani should be marked piano?
  • At the end of m.85, that quarter-note in the flute and oboe (oh, and piano) cannot be both tied over the bar, and staccato, right?
  • m.85 cello, should the first two notes also be A-flat?
  • m.86 fl/ob/pf, fourth quaver, E-flat?

Thanks for your time, Karl.  I'm sorry you spent time examining the score...I really included it as an afterthought, having just discovered how to make PDF files on finale. It goes without saying that the score is not performance ready. I'd never show it in this draft-like form given a performance situation. I appreciate the scrutiny, but I'm more interested in the broader musical context.  I'm still working on getting finale to behave. If solicited for a large work I will print out the score, ink it up and edit for performance, but that's not an immediate goal of mine. I'm just enjoying the fact that in short time, I can compose and hear a decent rendering of a larger-forces work. I have more of an eye for performance with my solo and chamber works. Thanks again.

My Summer Vacation:

My summer has been fruitful. I've been able to compose without distraction as my wife and I are living in different provinces for the time being (we're moving from Edmonton to the Toronto area). Anyhow here are two of the works composed this summer.
A rugged on the outsides Piano Sonata (15) and a divertimento for three winds.
On reflection, the Sonata is somewhat aggressive and relentless in the outer movements.

Thanks for the comments, Robert! I suppose my profile photo reveals the fact that Copland is one of my favourites. I composed the "awakening" movement as a memorial to my mom who passed away right after I completed the 14th. I was envisioning her afterlife; waking up--feeling brand new, then strolling around a carnival-like piece of heaven.
I enjoyed composing the Violin Sonata 2. I can post the outer movements on soundcloud.

I've just completed a new work. It's a chamber symphony of sorts, with a solo cello featured. Like my other sinfonias, it's between 10-12 minutes long. I'd decided last week to compose a concerto-like work in a lyrical, quasi-tonal style, and this is the resulting work. I am certain to make some minor revisions. Here is my latest...

Rivers Beyond has some very striking moments, for me particularly in the second and third movements, and a good sense of unity overall. Some of the wilder, denser rhythms and counterpoint get lost in the homogeneous timbres of the string sounds, but my ear being accustomed to these kinds of renderings it's not so difficult to see through to the music itself. I like it.

This is an Elegy for string (midi) orchestra. As my mom was in hospice care I composed it as a middle movement of a SQ. I finished it it upon her passing on June 1st this year. She always liked the tonal 20th C composers (Barber, Copland, RVW) so I conjured something I think she would have liked; even if I weren't her son.

This is beautiful, and in its concision has a wonderful focus.  Very well done!

Thanks Karl. It's great to get positive feedback from you. I've been revising some works ( they all need it!) and sometimes arranging for different instruments.

Here is an arrangement of the slow movement of an old (2014) clarinet/ string quartet for flute and string orchestra. I get flack for having no solo flute in my collection.

Oh, I dunno.  A flutist friend of mine gets (generally, unsolicited) quite a sheaf of flute unaccompanied pieces each year, but he reports that an improbable few repay a second reading.

So, deflect the flack!  Wait until you feel that flute unaccompanied is the only possible means of expressing a certain musical idea.  Stand out from The Pack!  8)

You're right. What was I thinking?I haven't composed for solo flute for a reason...Of course, I use flute very often (and enjoy it!).

Odd. Other than Bach's BWV1013, I don't think I've ever willingly listened to a piece for solo flute.

I just found my 4th Sinfonia. It was composed three years ago and is my longest work. This is the slow movement (some of the time) inspired by some of George Perle's theoretical musings (though it doesn't sound like it).

Was it a registral matter?  Di you need to soloist to clear away from the accompaniment texture?

Exactly. As I thinned out the string section the solo cello needed a higher in tessitura so I made it solo violin. Much cleaner and more lyrical that way. I do enjoy cello and orchestra in modern music but this wasn't the right work for it.

Just completed the 2nd movement of my latest piano sonata. If you're wondering why I compose so many of these things, the answer is simple: I can find pianists to perform these, and a good performance is important to me. Larger forms for larger groups too often remain in paper form for years--though with the improved Garriton sounds it is more satisfying to hear a large work electronically-- so no one hears what you're doing. Ironically, I don't compose at the piano (except an occasional sounding of ideas), but I like the idiom. Here are the first two movements of Sonata 17

Thanks, Karl...

I have just completed my 17th Piano Sonata. The 2nd and 3rd mov. are without interruption. It's a rather short work, even for me . It's fast, slow, faster. Much of the harmony is based on a dissonant polychord as well as a maj +5 chord (01358) for those interested. I may post the score later today.

Thanks for asking. My father was a jazz musician and later did TV and film composing (1960s-80s) so his was the first direct influence. I studied with Peter Racine Fricker as an undergrad, and did grad work with some talented east-coasters who were serially inclined. To answer you question, I'd say Copland, Sessions, Hindemith and Rautavaara are the first composers that come to mind. Of course there are so many...

Today, I composed two more of my short works for clarinet and piano as well as altering the Symphonic Ode. I have enjoyed touching up the Ode because it is inspired by two past teachers; George Tremblay, who taught me how to write a looser form of serialism that pops up in this work, and Peter Racine Fricker, whose "invisible ostinato" technique I make frequent use of.

Here's the latest:

Last week, I put the 8th chamber symphony on soundcloud (I'm editing it now) and to my bafflement, the third mov. (7 minutes) was played dozens of times per hour for around 24 hours...then nothing (mostly in China).  I'm a realist, so I feel pretty certain that it became some kind of attachment or was part of some crazy ap. that ran up the total plays. But I'd like to think that some listener heard it and saw the light!, mailing it everywhere music can go ;) and that now I have a Chinese fan club, but nah....not too likely. Anyway, here's the latest version of the 8th; it has a concertante violin and piano and is all strings.

I've completed my 18th piano sonata, which I call the "Cycling" sonata because it has perpetual motion in the third movement as well as ample use of pedal tones (it's not a pun on "pedal", rather the sound is sometimes the kind of hum one hears while riding). Initially I disliked the slow movement and was going to shelve it, but now, 4 days later, I've changed a few things in the theme and find it satisfactory. It's odd; the people I want to hear these works are music lovers but not necessarily composers, but they seldom click on the composer's page. Since I'm temporarily living in a somewhat remote town in Ontario there are few live musicians in the area so all musical correspondences are on line....but this will change. Knowing there is no immanent performance saves me editing time and frees me to compose for any ensemble...of course arranging a performance can be tricky but I'll worry about that once I land somewhere.       Here's the sonata

Well I sure hope more people get the opportunity to hear your music.  I think piano music must be especially difficult to get performances of, considering the amount of time piano students tend to put towards learning 19th century repertoire and some Bach and Mozart. How have you approached this situation in the past?

And BTW, do you know much of Carl Vine's piano music? Just that I think on the surface many of the harmonies sound somewhat similar.

I think that is entirely the right idea.  Not that there is anything 'wrong' with flute solo "feminine" in mood;  only there is so much of it about already . . . one does want to create a distinct utterance.

Here we go...an improved version of the 18th sinfonia for 11 players. I was going to make it three movements but changed my mind and will leave it at two. Since both movements have a variety of tempi and the arc of the piece doesn't call for it I'll make it a wrap. Though some seasoning will, I'm sure, be added. I've added an interlude after the first mov. I simply wanted to compose a little more for the group...

I've completed two more short piano pieces from a set of preludes and dances. The works are both highly canonic in nature, though it's difficult to hear. Sometimes the canons are at strange intervals or inverted or delayed, prolonged, harmonized, you name it. Actually, I'm overstating that. These works as well as the other piano works are intended for performance but I'll have to wait, as I'm still living in a remote part of Canada(temporarily).

I believe my first two preludes Op 125 are above...

I'm now composing some Piano preludes and intermezzi. There will be some analysis on my blog.

Now I've completed a set of 6 preludes and dances for piano. (1-31) ...No. 5 is a challenging piece for a keyboardist (at recommended tempo). I'll clean up the scores soon for posting.

I'm in the process of composing a set for wind quartet and piano. The first piece is fast and angular. The second is lyrical in nature. The third is a short ABA.

It's been updated a bit. I'm going to leave it at three pieces for now. I have so many works for this combination...On to something different.

A funny thing happened...I was trying to compose the 1st mov. for a string quartet and after a few hours I was ready to toss the music. It was too whimsical. Then it occurred to me to arrange the music for  the Piano Quintet (p+ 4 winds) that needed a finale. It works! I might have been writing for strings but the music is for winds in character. It's the 4th movement...

https://soundcloud.com/ronald-roumanis/sets/8-works-for-piano-and-4-winds

And here's the 5th piece from the piano suite. I'm calling the pieces "Meditations for Piano" since three of the five are slow and reflective--not suite-like at all :)

My latest work (opus 129, and I really need opus numbers to keep things organized) is for Fl, Cl, Vln, Cello, and Piano. The 1st movement is based on a rhythmic motif and a 10-note set based on three chords in succession. It's "Fall" in my 4 Seasons at 6AM

You can follow the score at my blog...

https://soundcloud.com/ronald-roumanis/sets/the-seasons-6-am-1

Additionally, I have the 2nd piece: A Winter Morning which I just completed. It's not too long (3:30) but was an intense experience to compose. Here it is...I'll put the rough score on my blog..

I've just finished the "Spring" movement of the 4 seasons at 6AM. The only spring-like element is the sound of a unison pitch dividing into several lines. It's kinda "Canadian Spring"; short and a little bleak. The motif is longer than usual for me--a 5-note looping figure you here first in the violin. I watched some John Coltrane youtube last night and I think my motive resembles his Giant Steps motive, though it's hard to here in this less tonal context.

Really liking the counterpoint in Summer Morning, it feels loose and swaying but always deliberate. Also the way you use a simple gesture to build up the sound at the beginning is very nicely done. All in all a well balanced piece with a naturally flowing structure.

Such evocative music, it's very beautiful.  I'm quite jealous of people who have this apparent ease and confident train of thought.

You know what I think would be helpful from some of you more experienced composers is to have a thread explaining your process.  How do you approach a blank page?  Where do the melodies and harmonies come from?  Do you employ a theoretical approach or do you just follow the music?

I'm not usually a fan of much contemporary music, but with you there always seems to be something hook the listener, it's like a painting in sound.

I have to say I think your recordings would be much improved with a better sound set, but that is incidental to the music itself.

Kind regards
Mark

When I last posted it (not here) I didn't get much feedback. Maybe the sound quality's bad (it sounds fine on my headphones) or something else. Anyway, here it is...not too long ca. 4'

I think it is very good.  The sound quality is not bad, per se;  I do think it the kind of piece which is much better served by actual musicians.  (I know, we all realize that MIDI is inadequate at best.)  In a live performance, it would be a dramatic piece;  and the MIDI (a little worse than usual) makes it sound like buttons have been pushed.  The piece itself is, to repeat, very good!

Thanks Karl. Strangely, the sound quality sounds pretty good through my headphones (unless I'm going "nose-blind" to the faults). I suppose I'll need to get some better sounds. I've received several criticisms of the sound quality on assorted instruments, and I certainly don't want the listener to have to strain. I'm not that way when I listen to other composer's music unless something in the sound precludes my comprehension of the work.

I don't mean that the sound is bad, but . . . I guess I am having no success at explaining what I mean.

I misunderstood...Yes, a live musician/s would change everything (I have had many comments  :( on the sound quality, so I expect it); in fact, I appreciate the different aspects a talented performer can reflect. That's why I don't micromanage every element on my scores. I have had pleasant surprises in the past when a performer is truly "hearing" the music.
Here is the draft of movement one of my sonata 22 for piano...

I don't believe it is a good use of our time, to micromanage the sound files (especially since the end result is still going to be rather inadequate).  Carry on!

Here is the finale of the violin sonata. Just completed today, it is the canons and heavy syncopation of the first movement and finishes with a lyrical solo as in the 1st mov. Though it's gratifying to finish with a bang, I choose to use materials based on the Lento 2nd at the end as that's more in character with the work in its totality.

It wasn't my intent, but after a couple of days distance, I was surprised to hear the similarity, which is fine by me. Its origin was in the horn ostinato; I thought I could have some fun with the figure and all of the counterpoint. It does sound a bit like cheeky Paul.

As some of my recent works have been episodic in nature, I decided to make this sonata movement more firmly crafted--yet hopefully not predictable. There are two theme groups. The 32nd note semitone figure, and the ascending 4th quasi tonal arpeggio (and chords).

Here it is...

As far as a work being "Episodic," all works are episodic in one sense: it is a matter if the episodes have connections of some sort.  Remember, even silence can be a connector (cf. Anton Bruckner ).   ;)

Here is the finale (3rd mov.) to my thorny piano sonata. It's very dense in motivic relations based upon  two harmonic structures and a propulsive rhythm that begins w/ 3/4  6/8 interplay. I was thinking Ginestera in tone but it's more like Bartok or Peterson. I spent quite some time adding some silence to the note-abundant texture. Though complex, it's short--2 minutes. Included is the 3rd. mov. score and the a-files of the other two movements. It's my shortest sonata.

Lovely!

Thanks again Karl.

Here is a guitar set of around 10 short pieces. I've always avoided composing for guitar, even when commissioned, due to its limitations. As a jazz guitarist, I'm well aware how difficult it is to play solo relative to a group setting, but there is not a whole lot of modern guitar music that I like (too many extended effects pieces) so I've started up, composing around 30 pieces (mostly short) in 2019.

Here is the 1st movement of my latest piano sonata. After composing the 2nd and 3rd movements, I wrote this which integrates material from the outer movements ( The triplet chord figure from the 2nd movement and the repeated note rhythmic figure from the 3rd. The pitch material is similar, comprised of 3 tetrachords that together form the 12 note aggregate. But by themselves these chords have strong tonal properties (well, 2 out of three). This way there is strong harmonic pull that at times sounds diatonic, other times atonal and 12-tone.

Here is the just-completed Sonata 30 for Piano. It's in one movement (one of only two in the collection) and is not really divisible into sub-sections--that's why it's one movement :)   .  The sonata has no serial material nor is it based on a specific PC set. Rather, the language is quasi-tonal with a CMaj to AMaj dynamic (transposed quite often) I hope you find it engaging.

How few years ago, Ron?

I don'r remember exactly. When I resumed composing after a nearly 20-year hiatus I contacted a choir director up in north Ontario (where I lived in 2010-12) and wrote a few pieces at his request. When I didn't hear back from him, I found he'd left the school because of illness. I found this one in my files and changed a few things last week. How are you doing Karl? I'm glad to see you back online here.

Please send me the score.  We don't know yet, of course, when we can resume rehearsing and other normal operations, but your piece would be perfect for Triad.

I'll be happy to. I'll just put in the piano arrangement then send it off. But choral singing is a hazardous activity in the eyes of the CDC  :)  .

Just completed at midnight 1-14-21. Here is the just-completed slow movement (draft) to the piano sonata. In most of my music, the melody grows out of the harmonies and the distinction is often subtle (in diatonic music this is not so much the case). In slow music, some notion of melody is important as the rhythms and contrapuntal figures of fast music (listen to the 1st movement of this sonata (35)) are routinely rounded out. In this work, I use chord layering as a means of adding melodic gestures and harmonic depth. Under many chords are other chords that have their own business to mind. This movement will be connected to a final movement which is being foreshadowed with the faster runs and arpeggios. I hope you like it.

Rip awakes (in 7/8); 2. avoids his shrewish wife and 3. Rip and his dog (wolf) play; 4. Rip meets his adult daughter and 5. Rip settles into a peaceful life.

I enjoyed it.  Perhaps it's because of the weather, but I found it autumnal.

Nice work!

Five years later I answer :-X Yes Peter Racine Fricker was my first teacher (besides my father).

Here's the ending of my latest piano sonata. It's highly chromatic yet tonal materials are never far away.

Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed this. Indeed, tonal materials seem to be everywhere yet they are never in control, and the texture is constantly in flux. Interestingly, both this and your Part I end with an arpeggiated triad! Is there more to this Sonata, or just the two parts you have posted?

New work. It's rondo-like with variations.

Very nice. I especially enjoyed the Lento-Vivace movement - the ending is transcendent!

But the playlist is confusing - you linked to the second track in the list, and the first sounds like basically the same thing as the second, though the title indicates it is movement I. An earlier version of the first movement? This is a 2-movement sonata?

I haven't been here for awhile so here's my complete piano sonata (6/2023). It's two movements and I positioned them in the order I composed so the 2nd movement's first. Mov. 2 is fast and slippery while the first is more diatonic in materials. I hope you like it...

I just finished composing and revising this passacaglia.  It has a short intro and coda with a 7-bar fixed bass that eventuall becomes featured melody. For me, the challenge is to balance the materials; if you stray to far from the fixed figure you might lose it and the work will lack coherence. Then again, you don't want your work  to be stiff and predictable by overstressing the theme. This is for a piano/strings quintet and finishes the larger work.

Here's the opening movement of my last piano work. It's largely diatonic but has lots of 7ths and 9ths in voicings and parallel motion.

Nice!  I listened to the first movement but was unfortunately interrupted, but will listen to it in its entirety in a bit.  :)

How are things going at your end?  Have you had much luck getting your work performed, etc.?  I saw a bit somewhere when googling that you used to help orchestrating work for your father?  I'd love to hear more about how you got into composing if you have a chance.  You may have mentioned it earlier, but I don't know the thread very well (please feel free to mention a page number or a posting if you've already written about it).

Best wishes,

PD

Brand New...I've just completed the opening movent of my piano sonata (Twilight, 10/2023). It's a little extroverted (except the ending) and has both tonality and nontonality. It's also fast, then slow. I hope you like it.

Sorry PD, I didn't notice this until now. Thanks for listening... Yes, my father was a Hollywood composer as well as a jazz arranger (back in the 50-60s). His big band recorded on Decca Records. He also did advertising, mainly arranging jingles for radio play. His Shaefer Beer arrangements were on the radio during Yankees games for over 20 years. Later, he scored for television and movies. I learned arranging and began to score some of the insignificant scenes (a couple of PBS specials and  really bad show called Helltown). I decided to get a formal education. I taught composition/theory, etc. for a few years at a university but couldn't land a tenure-track position. I stopped composing between 1993-2010, feeling embittered at the music scene. Now I compose for fun. I plan on arranging a recording of some of my music at some point and I'll let everyone know when it happens. Good luck in your own composing! Ron

Here's  is my last symphonic work. The total work is longer than average for me, though it's only about 17 minutes.  This is on the diatonic/non-tonal border (I'd say 2/3rds of my work could be described as such) and is scored for chamber orchestra. https://soundcloud.com/ronald-roumanis/sets/complete-chamber-sinfonia-42

Here's a revision of the Largo of the quartet I recently composed. It might seem old-fashioned to some, but there are "modern" quartets (including two of mine) all around, and a little diatonicism is good for my mood.

Diatonic, but to my ears not old-fashioned or traditional. And if a composer has something to say in an "old-fashioned" style, if the result is music, who cares? You certainly had something to say here. Thank you for sharing.
