Title: Major-Label Avant-Garde Classics: EMI Virgin EMI Virgin EMI
Post by: snyprrr on April 14, 2014, 11:50:06 AM
I'm going to try this Thread out to see if it works. After we've exhausted conversation concerning one label, we can Retitle every day, week, or month. So, hopefully we'll rediscover some gems here?

On Sony, we've had Stravinsky and Varese,... who can forget the Lutoslawski, Ligeti, and Schnittke?,... I like that Slava disc of Schnittke's 2nd CC,... then there's that disc of Henze's 'Reqiuem', very unique,... and don't forget the odd-duck Penderecki 'Gala' disc, lolz!

There are lots of one-offs, such as the single disc devoted to Berio 'concertos' conducted by Boulez,.. I mean, I didn't mean this to be a Boulez Thread, but, of course, he is responsible for some of their output. So, maybe, what are some of your non-Boulez favourites?

It awaits me in The Pile.

Tangential source of amusement:  went to check to see which label was responsible for the Percussions de Strasbourg.  Took me a couple of minutes to make sure who it was, since  apparently they did their best to hide the label's name on the box.  (It's a UMG production,  with Erato and Universal's French jazz label being the prominent copyright holders.  But you have to look for the recording data on each CD to find that out,  plus a small logo on the back of the box in a group of logos not necessarily familiar to English language audiences.)

I have disc 3 (the piano works) which is great because I love most of the etudes and most of the "Musica Ricercata". I am generally unhappy with that series because I would have really liked to see some orchestral works of his.

Those  are in the Warner box.  Have both and you have almost all of Ligeti.

This classic performance has just recently been made available on CD:

[asin]B00F8ONW5S[/asin]
Even if the last movement of the Sinfonia is missing (it hadn't been composed when this recording was made--a couple of days after the world premiere), this is simply fantastic!

This CD was my introduction to Kaija Saariaho's work:

[asin]B00005NNNX[/asin]
I think Château de l'âme is rather beautiful song-cycle (and Dawn Upshaw is simply ravishing in it  :) ).

And last but not least, these two fascinating Nono / Abbado albums:

That Stockhausen is simply fantastic! A prized item in my collection since it was released, even if the "bonus" tracks (the Mikrophonien) can be found in an SV release.

Yep, I read nothing but praise for this album...contrary to what I wrote earlier, new copies are available at decent prices on both sides of the Atlantic...I'm quite tempted!

In my collection, I have the SV album of the Klavierstücke I through XIV with Ellen Corver:

Even if the last Klavierstücke are missing from the Kontarsky album, I must admit that the later pieces are a bit too bizarre for my taste (with the keyboard player having to grunt, count, etc.  ::) -- and some thing of a model rocket having to be thrown from the piano  :D).  Nrs. XV, XVII and XVIII are available in other SV CDs, while AFAIK Nr. XVI still awaits its world premiere...

And to come back on-topic...

Apart from the Berio Sinfonia mentioned above, ArkivMusic is resissuing several 20th century albums of the Columbia / RCA / Sony catalogue that had never been transferred to CD:

That's Licht for you. I don't care much for it even though there are a few works there that I enjoy--and I have most of it already anyway.

XVI was released in SV57.

I'm only missing XII-XIV (I've thought of getting the Corver CD just to fill the gaps, though I have them recorded) and XIX.

I must say that Natürliche Dauern has satisfied me much more thoroughly (as far as Stockhausen on the piano goes) than the Licht Klavierstücke ever could :).

There are plenty of orchestral recordings of Ligeti. I mean you have the Teldec box, the DG box, various recordings on Wergo, a new recording on Ondine (w/ Lintu and Schmid in the Violin Concerto), among others. Some composers, especially more unknown ones, are lucky to have more than one recording of even one their works. I think we should just be thankful instead of wishing there were more available. The CD medium has been very kind to Ligeti.

From what I can tell, Philips itself had nothing to do with those recordings--they all seem to be copyrighted by other members of the Universal Group.  The most frequent by far is Classics Jazz France, un label de Universal Music France.; there are also mentions of Erato (the original one,  I assume, not the substitute for Virgin) and Arion.

A couple major Penderecki works (St. Luke Passion and Utrenja) were issued on Philips. But I think they were licensed from some Polish label.

I'm glad I held onto my Philips LPs. It's a little sad they're out of the recording biz now, subsumed in Decca.

Philips has a few bizarre things out there,... and then... nothing!?! I'll give it a little while longer for the SONY-heads to catch up, but it looks as though Philips was just waaay to conservative to release too much Avant-Garde.

Not the case at all with Sony which has some releases that really changed me.

(i.e. several Boulez releases, Ligeti, Stockhausen .. )

Off the top of my head, there were some excellent Philips discs with Reinbert de Leeuw:
Vivier's Marco Polo pieces
Gubadulina's Perception and Jetzt immer schnee
Ustvolskaya's Composition I-III
Gorecki's Lerchenmusik and Kleines Requiem fur eine Polka

Also a good disc of Zimmermann concertos with Schiff, Holliger and Hardenberger.

The question was not, did Philips have any "new music" releases worth mentioning.
The question was,  did they have any, regardless of the merits of the music/performance?

And going back over the Percussions de Strasbourg box,  I realized I must need new glasses, since at least of the third of the pieces have copyrights that refer to "prospective de 21eme siecle, Philips".  The Xenakis is only one of many.

yea, i mean, I somewhat agree,... but you don't just love the Maderna/Holliger disc? But even if you don't, we must acknowledge that Philips (The Establishment) actually did lose their shit a couple of times and release something worthy (like edward and ritter just noted). But yea, Philips is in the tank when it comes to the Avant Garde (which is a pity because of their yummy sonics).

I always loved the Lutoslawski Oboe/Harp Concerto on Philips, very crisp ('The Essential Lutoslawski', chortle, remember??- or the original LPs from the library, ahhh).

So, do we move on to our next Super Major? Who can it be now??

So, just to recap- SONY, they've shown quite a commitment to at least do things consistently, Philips, not so much at all... neeexxxt...

From some digging, it appears that the II indicates that it was the revised version of 1991, rather than the original version of 1989 (which is no longer available for performance). This would probably explain why the II has been dropped from the title of the revised version.

I'm not sure what the differences between the two are.

Post by: snyprrr on April 19, 2014, 11:05:26 AM
ok, on to DG (surely James approves! ;))

What's the single most iconographic DG Avant-Garde disc?

1) Abbado conducts Ligeti, Boulez, Rihm, Nono

Surely everyone remembers this one? It seemed like back in the Stoned Age (the '80s) this was the only disc by DG with any meat. Then, there's:

2) Abbado conducts Xenakis, Dallapiccola, Henze, Perezzani

...and finally:

3) Abbado conducts Nono, Furrer, Kurtag

Then there's the famous

4) Mutter plays Berg/Rihm

..beyond that...

5) Gubaidulina 'Offertorium'

6) Levine conducts Carter, Cage, Babbitt,...

Kurtag/Stockhausen

Then, of course, we have their budget series with the funky art-work:

7) Berio
8) Henze
9) Henze VC
10) Schoenberg Chamber Music (Atherton)***
11) BA Zimmermann
12)

oy, just too many to list. THEN we have the 20/21 Series:

Schnittke
Takemitsu (3-4)
Boulez
Lindberg

oh, it's making my head hurt. Obviously DG has had quite the commitment. Whatcha got?

Well, DG had loads of Stockhausen on LP, but the rights were bought by the Stockhausen Foundation, who now sell the CDs direct form the webpage (with excellent presentations, albeit at quite high prices  :( )...

But...you can still get some Stocky / DG albums in their original DG incarnations form ArkivMusic:

I got Samstag aus Licht this way, and am very happy with my purchase (which cost me about half as much as the SV edition).

As for Henze, there's of course this (including all the DG / Henze albums --AFAIK).
Quite beautifully produced (with the individual CDs reproducing the original artwork of the LPs or CDs--e.g. Ondine under Knussen).

And this "Complete Works" (or "Work-in-progess", as the back cover has it  ;) ):
Very high production standards, and a collection that (even if you own almost everything that it includes in previous incarnations, as is my case) stresses the unity and at the same time the remarkable evolution of Boulez's music over 60 years of composing (and contains the only available recording of Improvisé - Pour le Dr. Kalmus  :) --OK, it's just a miniature piece, but still  ;) )... But complete it is not  :( : apart from the withdrawn pieces (Polyphonie X or Poésie pour pouvoir--available elsehere--), some published works like the fanfare Initiale, or the orchestration of Ravel's Frontispice, or lesser-known opuses (e.g. the incidental music to J.-L- Barrault's staging of Thus spoke Zarathustra), are sadly missing form this set...

1) Abbado conducts Ligeti, Boulez, Rihm, Nono

Love that one. Got it for the Ligeti when it came out, but the Rihm made such a lasting impression that I had to get everything I could put my hands on from that composer.

There is also this, though I prefer the Arditti/Richard version:

The Ravel orchestration can be heard almsot in its entirety (a couple of seconds are missing at the end  :( ) here: http://www.universaledition.com/Frontispice-Pierre-Boulez/composers-and-works/composer/88/work/12922

DG also has / had some avantgarde stuff with the late Giuseppe Sinopoli

Maderna. I think this was Sinopoli's his first recoding for the yellow label--now reissued by Brilliant.

A fascinating Bussotti compilation. The Rara Requiem is conducted by Taverna, Sinopoli does Lorenzaccio and Bergkristall (now available from ArkivMusic).

The Maderna and Lou Salome recordings are both available as part of "The Art Of Giuseppe Sinopoli" orchestral set, and the companion concerto set includes Manzoni's Masse with Pollini as soloist.  I do not remember if that last is in the Pollini 20th century set, although it should be.  Each set has a bit of Schoenberg as well, although the real focus of both sets is much more mainstream (meaning pre 1910).  And there is also Sinopoli's Second Viennese set.

It's funny. I have The Library set up somewhat Chronologically, so, when you get to the 20th Century, you have all these yellow (DG) and red (EMI) spines, with Decca/London... but then, around the 1950 mark, all those spines stop! (not perfectly Chronological, mind you) Then you have the odd yellow or red amoungst all the Import spines.

But the box full of the Masters of High Modernism has lots of DG, SONY, and EMI spines... only because they come FROM the Viennese Tradition. Anyhow,... nevermind! 8)

Yea, y'know, it's like RCA may have put out some Avant=Garde, but, yea, not very many I find desirable! Maybe the Majors have these Composers on contract!!, and Berio was RCA's b****?? oy!! An interesting point brought up.

I am desperately trying to find a cheap copy of that Henze/Brahms PQ disc.

I'd almost have to say that that Zimmermann disc is the most Avant thing they ever did????? huh???? (maybe that Arditti/Xenakis LP?- or was it the Ligeti/Ferneyhough??). There's one Schnittke 'Homage', I believe. Wow, is that it??

RCA's looking like the prude on the block at this point!

That's why I wanted to do this Thread, just to clear up any issues!! We can settle the recorded world well into the '90s with this Thread (when exactly did the "change" happen in the music biz? I forget...mis '90s?...) Universal?

Decca had the whole "Headline" series in the late 70s.

If I had to single one out:

Chailly's discs of Berio's arrangements, Schnittke (Concerti Grosso 3 & 4), Varèse, Turangalîla, Gurrelieder/Verklärte Nacht/Chamber Symphony No. 1

That Schnittke was such a BigDeal when it came out! Oh! Major label!!

MTT/Stravinsky! Yes, one of the best programmed discs!

Tashi cracks me up!

Now that I think of it, I have an RCA CD with The Audobon Quartet playing Laderman and someone else, and there's a Tashi disc with Hindemith, and a few other lost gems.

London did some cool stuff but still has a very conservative image like Philips. Still, they belie that image with - oh, Decca Head Xenakis/Howarth!

Well, I'm enjoying the conversation. Let's just keep it rolling through the weekend, and switch to EMI, and we can just have a round robin at the end.

1) Schnittke/Rihm String Quartets

2) Schnittke Cello Concerto 1

3) LUTOSLAWSKI

4) PENDERECKI

5) Maw

6)

Hm, I'm hitting a brick wall here, help me out.

The first recording of Nono's Prometeo

More Nono & Metzmacher as a filler on this fine disc:

Ah, yes, all those were good ones! :D

I did like that Dalbavie was getting some EMI time, not to mention the other two.

It seems EMI and DG were fighting over Schnittke, haha!

I suppose we should include Virgin then. I seem to recall... oh, yes, a nice Takemitsu disc.

And it's quite a dedication to do that Nono.

I better stop looking or I'm gonna catch some CDCDCD here!! haaa- choooo!!!

I remember that old EMI with Schnidt, Busoni and Lutoslawski- nice cover!
