Title: Compositions to greet and celebrate summer
Post by: eljr on June 18, 2017, 03:57:20 AM
With summer 4 days away, what are some classical compositions that celebrate it?

Music I like, " a unique blend of Bergian expressiveness and Stravinskian objectivity".

Jill Gomez is exquisite.

unfortunately, not on YT. But this is a great work: Siegfried Thiele "Gesânge an die Sonne"

It is extremely (too) hot in Belgium ( ca 35° C) - the heat makes one lazy ...

You know, Verdi wrote a  "Four Seasons", too.

And a fine one, for that matter.

Yes. It could easily be included as part of a full ballet program with other works, since it's half an hour in length, more or less.

And I actually embedded a Youtube vid. Yeah me!

Purcell wrote "The Masque of the Seasons", basically one act of "The fairy queen" music.

And Webern "Im Sommerwind", one of the most luxurious late romantic pieces, again a demonstration that virtually all the "modernists" could have kept writing 1st class late romantic music if they had wanted to.

Although a season too early I'd recommend 'Enter Spring' by Frank Bridge.

You're welcome. The seasons do inspire composers from all over the world.

We can pick this theme up ...somewhere in late september?

But do enjoy summer music first!

Dutch composer Henk Badings (1907-1987) is, at least, an interesting composer with a somewhat troubled WW2 history/biography (read Wikipedia  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henk_Badings). This is a jolly choral trifle!

https://www.youtube.com/v/9m-O1jsWRZw

Gorgeous music by two other composers with a problematic attitude during WW2 ...(I chose this combination purely by accident).

Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968), is another composer marked by WW2.

https://www.youtube.com/v/PZTClWgoxn8

Joseph Canteloube (1879-1957) joined the Vichy government in 1941...He has a knack for the utmost gorgeous melodies ( cfr. the famous Chants d'Auvergne). Triptyque for soprano and orchestra starts with a lucious "Offrande à l'été". The poetry by Roger Frène is ...not up to Baudelaire/Verlaine standards. But these 16 minutes of very-late Romantic, quasi Impressionistic vocal /orchestral "beauté exquise" never fail to pull at my heart strings....

Véronique Gens is excellent - Frederica Von Stade also made a great recording, (ca 1982), with Antonio de Almeida and the Royal PhO.

Note that the Russian composer Boris Tischenko (1939-2010) composed a work called "Beatrice: A Choreo-Symphonic Cycle, Op. 123 (1998-2005), containing five Dante Symphonies, each on a different chapter of The Divine Comedy.  That's in addition to nine other symphonies (1969-2009).

Mendelssohn of course:

Though we are a bit beyond Midsummer.  Here in southern California, the hottest days of summer are yet to come around the beginning of September, and it doesn't start cool down until late October, or around Walpurgisnacht.
