Title: Top ten Stravinsky works?
Post by: Thatfabulousalien on November 17, 2016, 09:22:45 PM
I couldn't find an existing thread on this, which I find suspicious but I digress.
What is your top ten Stravinsky works?
:)

- Les Noces
- Concerto in E-flat, "Dumbarton Oaks"
- Scherzo à la russe
- Canticum Sacrum
- Agon
- Variations for orchestra, Aldous Huxley in memoriam
- Requiem Canticles

Here goes nothing:

Le sacre du printemps (of course -- 8) )
Petrouchka
The Fairy's Kiss
Jeu de cartes
Agon
Violin Concerto
Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra
(another vote for this work as it's highly underrated)
Symphonies for Wind Instruments
Dumbarton Oaks
Mass

A fine list, but some changes need to be made:

Le sacre du printemps
Petrouchka
Apollon musagète
Symphony of Psalms
Mass
Violin Concerto
Symphonies of Wind Instruments
Duo concertant
Agon
Concerto in E-flat, "Dumbarton Oaks"
Title: Re: Top ten Stravinsky works?

Symphony in 3 movements
Petrouchka
Le Sacre du printemps
L'histoire du soldat
Symphony in C
Ebony Concerto
Symphony of Psalms
Dumbarton Oaks
Pulcinella

But I have only superficial or no knowledge of the later music and some other important pieces like Rake's progress. And not enough memories of some pieces I think I liked, e.g. the octet and the violin concerto, so I went with safe choices I am familiar with.

Agon
Orpheus, or Ebony Concerto

Orchestral Variations

Agon

(in alphabetical order)
Fairy's Kiss
Firebird
Jeu De Cartes
Petrouchka
Pulcinella
Rite of Spring
Song of the Nightingale
Symphony of Psalms
Symphony in C
Violin Concerto

Dumbarton Oaks
Symphony in C
Jeu de Cartes
Ebony Concerto
Apollo
Orpheus
Symphony in Three Movements
Canticum Sacrum
Song of the Nightingale
Les Noces

I might try to slip in a couple concerti, or Scenes de ballet, or The Fairy's Kiss too. Plus the Mass.

Yes, that one does not make the top 10. Not that it isn't a towering masterpiece! It's just that this is Stravinsky we're talking about!

Nice to see some love for Canticum. I seem to be the only one here, apart from the Opposition, not to list the Rite. That might be fatigue after decades of listening.

Of course the list will differ on a different day, but my top 3 have been rock steady for 35 years.

The Rite of Spring

Such consistent excellence, I could easily find plenty of substitutes.

The Rite Of Spring (Le Sacre)
Symphony in Three Movements
Requiem Canticles
Agon
Symphonies of wind instruments
Variations for Huxley
Three Pieces For String Quartet
Oedipus Rex
The Soldiers Tale
Les Noces  8)

The Three Pieces are arguably something of an idiosyncratic choice, but of course:  why not?  8)

An international anti-Igor conspiracy?  No worries, he has laid them all to waste with an oeuvre that astounds for its variety, creativity, and overall scintillating brilliance.  A half-century from now he will be bigger than LvB, mark me.

Le Sacre
Der Feuervogel (sorry, I like the way it sounds in German)
Petrushka
VC
Symphony in C
Symphony of Psalms
Octet for Wind ('52 version)
Concerto for Two Pianos (Igor said it was 'perhaps' his favorite among his purely instrumental works, must be good )
Le Rossignol
Dumbarton Oaks

Turns out I have new favourites, after rekindling my love for Stravinsky during my sabbatical:

Song of the nightingale
Requiem Canticles
Agon
Oedipus Rex
Variations for Huxley
Symphony in Three Movements
Abraham and Isaac
Symphonies of wind instruments
Concerto for piano and winds
The Firebird/The Soldiers Tale
THIS is a MUCH better list 8)
Title: Re: Top ten Stravinsky works?

Requiem Canticles
Orpheus
Movements
Mass
Variations
Canticum Sacrum
Symphony of Psalms
Threni
Duo concertant

after that I had to go to iTunes to look through a list of compositions by Stravinsky I had recordings of to come up with a #10, which I think would be the Symphony in C, probably.

That also reminded me I don't actually own a recording of Canticum Sacrum though, which I will need to fix immediately.

I must admit I am not familiar with the one North Star has recommended (but I trust his taste   :) ), but the recording by Simon Preston is simply outstanding, and is by far my favourite of the work (and I know quite a few  ;)).

The Hyperion recording, to my ears, seems sweeter and less sharp-edged, with the voices slightly less brought to the foreground. That said, the voices are also more in tune. The Preston recording is earthier and more Byzantine, somehow otherworldly in its severity. I am leaning towards it, but may need both. (These are all among my favourite Stravinsky works after all.)

I didn't find that recording on Hyperion much to my taste. But then again, I haven't found many recordings I particularly find definitive on Hyperion anyway.

Before I knew it, I was up to fourteen and adding more, all of which have already been listed, including the perhaps less appreciated Capriccio for piano and orchestra, which I do consider quite a gem and an 'important' work.

My oversized list included perhaps 'lesser' and smaller works for which I have an inordinate fondness (like (Renard), or works I still find completely 'solid' and compelling after decades of familiarity i.e. In Memoriam Dylan Thomas, and the Cantata.

I entirely prefer the complete ballets, disregard the suites for the commercial and slighter money makers they were meant to be, (I mean, Pulcinella without the singers? ... or Song of the Nightengale vs. the full opera? ... no brainers) and the revised versions of anything he later revised.

I am going to specifically name Symphony in C.  I think it a far better work than the Symphony in three movements, which I was a bit surprised to see listed by a number of people.

But, I'm with Karl on this topic.  Stravinsky composed, whether they are small, medium or large-scale works, nearly nought but 'masterworks.'  Choosing just ten is a very restraining exercise, indeed.

Just as Peter Sellars once said paraphrasing: "The extraordinary thing about Stravinsky is that every piece is his best work. You get so deep inside each piece and it's the best....then you listen to another piece and then that is the greatest piece"

It's true, I was just having a Petrushka moment, after having a huge (the) Flood moment last night.

Really? 'The Flood'?

'The Flood', 'A Sermon, A Narrative, and A Prayer', and 'Abraham and Isaac' all reside outside of my "safe space"... ohhhh, just thinking about them gives me shivers! ???

I can rank LEAST fav much easier. Narration always gets my goat. And 'Pribaoutki' and some of the other Songs are not my cup of tea. The '2 Sketches for A Sonata' and a lot of the other 30sec. pieces...

BUT I DO THINK EVERY COMPOSER SHOULD HAVE STUFF THAT YOU JUST CANT STAND, TO BALANCE THINGS OUT.

(btw- no real fav Stravinsky... riiight????)

I think it would go a little something like this...

Agon (1957)
Requiem Canticles (1966)
L'histoire du soldat (1916)
Violin Concerto (1931)
Petrushka (1911)
Ebony Concerto (1945)
Symphony in Three Movements (1945)
Preludium for Jazz Band (1937)
Basel Concerto (1946)
Variations (1964)

Honourable mentions for Pulcinella, the Symphony of Psalms, the Octet and Septet, Ragtime, Tango etc. So many wonderful short pieces from Stravinsky; I chose my favourite in the Preludium, but it's a shame to have to leave out the rest.

Let's see if I can name ten...

- Symphony in 3 Movements
- Le sacre du printemps
- Pétrouchka
- Le roi des étoiles
- Pucinella Suite
- Jeu de cartes
- Violin concerto
- Les noces
- Capriccio for piano and orchestra
- The Rake's Progress

I made it ! Doesn't mean I like all these works though. I could have added Eddy Puss Rex, but I don't really like it. I genuinely like the first 5. I appreciate the others.

The Flood
Requiem Canticles
The Rite Of Spring (made it's way back)
Agon
Les Noces
Ebony Concerto
Petrushka (it's just so fun and schizophrenic)
Le Roi Des Etoiles
Mass
Movements For Piano And Orchestra

(it was hard to miss out Threni but I had to make my decision, considering I already had Canticles and Mass....)
