Title: Protest against advertisements during great music!
Post by: jochanaan on December 16, 2015, 06:50:08 PM
Tonight I listened to the great Argerich/Kremer/Maisky recording of Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio (Opus 50) on YouTube.  But much to my shock, advertisements kept interrupting the music, even during the Variations!  Now, would they dare try to place advertisements in, say, the final battle scene of the original Star Wars?  They would face worldwide protests! ::)

And that is what I want to see happen.  I have committed, despite the inconvenience it will cause me, not to listen to any classical music on YouTube for one week from tonight, and I have told Google so.

Who will join me? $:)

I'll certainly join you! Such an inconvenience when you're trying to enjoy the music. Just let me know what I have to do.

The next time you think of listening to something on YouTube, write a comment instead, with the information I just put out, clearly stating your intention. ;D And thanks!

I'm in.  Is it penalizing classical music in particular, though?  Shouldn't I boycott YouTube as a whole?  (Or izzat crazee talk? 8) )

Let's see now. You're listening to copyrighted material absolutely free, the performers are receiving no royalties, and instead of paying $2.99 plus minimal shipping on Amazon for even one of the many used copies listed, you're complaining that somehow your rights are being violated and that YouTube is not entitled to try to make money to continue offering free services which millions of people find immensely valuable. And since you're so outraged, what is your "weighty" threat? "I will not listen to classical music on YouTube for one week, and I call on all classical music lovers everywhere to join me in protesting your policy of putting advertisements between the beginning and end of great music."

Well that'll learn 'em all right. I bet they're monitoring every one of your important comments, YouTube will change their ways in an instant, and every classical music lover will join in on your protests.

My suggestion: be grateful. I have found items on YouTube I thought I'd never see again. I can get the Richard Burton Hamlet, where a single used copy is offered on Amazon for $95, for nothing on YT. (As it happens, I already have a legit copy.) I can see all kinds of movies, plays, concerts, all for the taking. And if you get Free YouTube Downloader or the like, you can download the material to your computer, royalty-free and ad-free.

I get that they need to advertise, and I don't mind it at the beginning or even at the end of a work.  But interrupting a variation set where there should be no breaks to plug whatever...!  And advertisements are always much louder than the recordings!  That's what gets me.

And those executives probably figure, for every one who complains, there are a hundred others who are irritated...

Those executives probably couldn't care less about your irritation; they aren't monitoring every upload to YT to see where the ads are placed.

You have no right even to this content, which is copyrighted material, hence no valid cause for complaint, and you've been offered at least three solutions to your problem: buy the CD, get an ad blocker, or get a download utility. Or live with it.

Actually it´s a very good thing they don´t. If they did, a lot of great music would disappear overnight from YT.

The best solution is indeed a downloader. Plenty of options to choose from.

In the first place, YouTube only puts advertisements in videos if the person who posted the video requests it. So it was the person who illegitimately posted the content and stole the rights from the producer/copyright owner who has interrupted the playback to collect an ad royalty.  In the second place, you have put yourself in the position of the sniveling crybaby by complaining that something you stole is broken. My best hope is that someone at YouTube actually sees your complaint and removes the content entirely.

It's simple. Subscribe to a service if you don't want ads.

Use Firefox or SeaMonkey to view what you want to see.

Install the Add-On/Extension for your browser to use to download what you want in the format you want.

For Firefox, I say use YouTube Video and Audio Downloader.  Excellent work by the developer on this one.

For SeaMonkey, I say use Youtube Best Video Downloader 2, or NetVideoHunter (I prefer the first one.)

VideoDownloadHelper for both is ok but harder to see what you are getting if you just want the audio stripped out from the video portion.

NOTE: As of now, YT has removed the 256K audio availability from the videos.  The maximum bitrate is now 160K via Opus files; one of the SeaMonkey extensions lets you mux this up to 192K for audio portions only for download.  You may find, however, that 128K is the max on many of the posted YT items.
