Title: Who was your crush when you were growing up?

Any type of crush at all for any reason at all. Do tell.

Well, those on actual girls I knew wouldn't be of much interest here. The women who bent my pubescent soul the hardest were Diana Rigg and Veronica Lake.

A blonde and a brunette? How open minded.  ;D. Veronica Lake was before my time, but I remember Diana Rigg - a nice bit of stuff indeed.

This is from a series of compilations that feature soundalike recordings. At the age of eight or nine I was given this copy. Even then I kind of noticed something interesting about the woman on the cover. Years later I recognised her in the TV show 'Are you being served?' Her name is Penny Irving -

But my first crush crush at about 13 or 14 was Mary Tamm on Doctor Who -

Those were the days when Doctor Who was comfortably and cosily crap and not a soap opera.

I definitely liked Mary Tamm - I first noted her in the Odessa File.

From that terrible kids 90s show that earned Democratic donor Haim Saban hundreds of millions of dollars...

Yeah, I remember her in that too. But a while back I happened to see a few minutes of a film I'd watched on numerous occasions, 'The Likely Lads' and realised for the first time that she was in it.

I had to search to find out who that is.  ;D. Closest I ever got to having a superhero crush was Margot Kidder as Lois Lane.   8)

The actress name is Amy Jo Johnson. A lot of guys born in the mid 80s developed a crush on her at the height of Power Rangers mania in the mid 90s.

After I replied I realised she looked familiar. Then with you saying now about the time period it clicked into place, because there's another forum where I'd seen her before.

The real ones are more interesting to remember.

My first crush was this very pretty blonde girl named Maša, longhaired, skinny, with slightly slanting beautiful green eyes. I was about ten, she was maybe two years older then me. I met her on summer holiday on Hvar, in Dalmatia, our parents knew each other slightly. For three weeks I followed her around like a puppy, non-stop. It was so obvious that I was teased by everyone about her for next two years at least. She grew up to be rather famous presenter on Serbian TV, but we never met after that holiday.

My second big crush was girl called Tatiana, Tanya for short. I was 13-14 and she was a year older than me. Our parents were friends, but not that close friends and they lived across the city, so I'd see her maybe couple of times a year, at birthdays or such. She was very beautiful, dark haired, pale, with circles around her eyes even as a teen, seemed serious and old for her age. Used to call me 'her little sister', as I had a long hair when I was 13-14, just to tease and annoy me. But she was trouble, big trouble. Self destructive, at fifteen in a fit of rage stabbed her dad with a kitchen knife, had a serious drug problem, string of boyfriends from bad to worse ... We lost touch, no idea what happened with her.

Never had a huge celebrity crush but in late 80s, early 90s when I was of crushable age I did fancy (thanks to Yugoslavian TV rather international programming) Sophie Marceau and Emanuelle Beart (pre duck lips) and Kathleen Turner and Winona Ryder. Today I still might have a slight crush on Kate Beckinsale.

Those are cool and interesting real life crushes indeed. Thanks for the descriptions. :)
And I was with a Tatiana for a few years, but in her case it was Tanika for short.

In real-life I can only remember one woman who was a crush, but not a real crush as such. I saw her and she saw me, but seconds later it was over and I never saw her again.   I was 20 years old but can remember everything about her like it was yesterday.
It's funny, I've a small number of memories I write down and storyboard that I return to. Those few seconds are one of them.  :)

My first serious girlfriend fits the bill: National Honor Society: high school class valedictorian; a talented piano player; earned a doctorate in psychology. Of course the fact that she was also a cute blonde (at least I thought so) was part of the crush.

Pathetic? No. But I think I kind of know what you mean. And I'd say it's in line with a lot of first crushes, were the girl or woman often appears (for want of a better term) relatively non-threatening.   :)

For those ignorant of Veronica Lake:

Check out her movies with Alan Ladd , e.g. The Glass Key and The Blue Dahlia.

Unfortunately, she was an alcoholic and had mental problems in the later 1940's.

No, Mrs. Rock never asked me to destroy reminders of my past (letters, photos, yearbooks). She's never been jealous. And she knows she's the only one who's ever made me happy.

Good for both of you!  In fact, I never had any pictures or anything else to purge.  I was a late bloomer and never dated a girl until I was 26 and in graduate school.

I went out with a grad student twice, dated an undergraduate girl for a few months and thought she was the one (she told me she was NOT the one  ;)  while we are on the way to a performance of Der Rosenkavalier at Ohio State), and then a few months after that, Mrs. Cato came along!   8)

Celebrity crushes I had when I was growing up: The first I recall was, like nearly every boy in mid-50s America, Annette Funicello the Mouseketeer:

A few years later it was Tuesday Weld on the Dobie Gillis show. I don't remember if her mercenary character bothered me or not, but I do remember loving her hair, her eyes, her lips, and especially her voice.

Then in the early sixties I saw Sophia Loren emerge out of the sea like some aquatic goddess in Boy on a Dolphin. That crush has lasted until this very day  ;)

In the later sixties it was Julie Newmar (Catwoman in Batman), Diana Rigg in The Avengers, and Barbara Eden in I Dream of Jeannie.

Erin Gray. I always like them tall and slim. Or short and slim. Or whatever. Anyway, she was definitely slim in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.
But I always thought she looked kind of short for a fashion model. Anyway, check out the absolutely period correct 'nuclear explosion level behind the head' hairlight  ;D

Guys, appreciate what you have at this forum. :-X

If this forum had more millennials or those younger (generation Zyklon is it?) this sort of thread would be deemed too riske and somewhat taboo. The ideological and cultural mores of millenials and those younger can be oppressive.

Here's another set of crushes that were probably influential.  ;D The thing is, it was a bit before my time, but because one of the dogs runs off at that beginning it was shown regularly on those outtakes shows at xmas. That was almost the only time we had a television so I got to see it often.

The premise of this thread is who we found attractive when we were growing up. So not horny middle-aged men but rather, nostalgic middle-aged men (or, for a few of us, nostalgic old farts  ;D ).

This is my kind of thread! Thanks for creating it, Nik!

A few of my early crushes...

The thing is, a woman like Kate Jackson is going to kind of almost pall when placed between those two (FWIW  Jaclyn Smith even nowadays stands out [check her out - her features remain neat, delicate, relatively symmetrical ]  and busts my chops  ;D) But I look at that shot with pro eyes and believe it was built around their relative height and in this instance a mistake. Also, KJ has her eyes on camera axis - and that can be a powerful tool, although here there's a number of reasons that picture editors (*furrowed brow*  ;D) aren't going to embrace it) But what do I know? I'm just a hack with a long lens.

From left to eight, THE HAIR, for goodness' sake!
Interesting, two are wearing belts (that could make a comeback sometime) and the third obviously doesn't need one.
The middle lady can donate her shirt to her brother or son.
Are they praying? And if yes, to WHOM?
As for me growing up, I liked Dr. Kildare (whoops, that sort of pegs my era...)
I didn't really have a favorite Beatle, though.

She grew up to be rather famous presenter on Serbian TV, but we never met after that holiday.
Wow, you had good taste!  ;D

Quote from: Draško on August 15, 2018, 11:46:52 AM
Self destructive, at fifteen in a fit of rage stabbed her dad with a kitchen knife, had a serious drug problem, string of boyfriends from bad to worse ... We lost touch, no idea what happened with her.
Wow, you had bad taste!  ;D

Like Draško, I think my real crush is a more interesting story than posting pictures of TV stars. I had a crush on a girl for a good 8 or 9 years, starting in the fourth grade. It only grew more intense because my family moved to another state after 2 years, and we started corresponding by email. (This was the early days of the internet, so we used our parents' email boxes and "To (Name) from (Name)" in the subject line!) Distance proved very effective at adding to the mythology of her perfection in my mind - she was as smart as Sarge's crush (now works for a science education think tank), funny, a redhead, a very good writer of emails, also a good piano player...wait are Sarge and I the same person? Nah - the redhead thing.

Anyway, I visited her a few times and counted them as some of the most magical days of teenagerhood. She visited me in college and I tried to lure her into attending the same school (she was a year behind).

And then I visited her at her home when we were adults, 25-year-olds. I was on vacation and agreed to stay on her couch for a night during my road trip.

Guys...I am not a clean guy. My girlfriend tells me when to clean my bathroom. But holy shit. Never seen a house like hers before or since. The pillow she gave me for the night had brown and black spots. Before I slept on the couch, she had to move pizza boxes and empty Chinese takeout boxes around the coffee table so I would have a place to put my glasses. The table was covered with trash. So was the dining table. Her bathroom did not have towels. Her bathroom did not have soap.

She expressly forbade me from looking at her bedroom.

During that day, as I gingerly moved empty boxes or asked for soap, she never once apologized or gave any hint that something might be different, or weird.

That crush died hard.

We often found excuses to show up at her apartment after school. She was gracious...usually...and gave us milk and cookies. Here's the class picture. Richard Chamberlain competed against Vince Edwards (Dr. Ben Casey), who wins, because his mentor was Dr. Zorba (the great Sam Jaffe).

Nice choices, all of them, even though I was one of those stubborn idiots who thought Cheryl Ladd was an improvement when she replaced Farah, despite all the scorn I received from die hard first hour Angel-lovers. In my early teenage 'approach', I found Cheryl far more huggable than Farah, and therefore more of an angel. ;)
