I thought of adding this to the thread on the symphonies below, but that seems to be going in its own direction, so I'll start a new topic instead.
Does anyone have recommendations for HIP Beethoven recordings besides the symphonies? I'm particularly interested in the piano and violin concertos. TIA.
Regarding the Piano Concertos, the HIP set that I own & like is Lubin & Hogwood, shown below, plus excellent price at the Amazon Marketplace (http://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Piano-Concertos-3-Sonatas/dp/B000E0LB8G/ref=sr_1_2/002-1787848-1538428?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1183846566&sr=1-2); Gardiner & Norrington (and likely a few others?) have HIP offerings, which I've not heard. :)

What? You got something against all the others? ;)
My preference for the Fortepiano Concerti is Levin / Gardiner.
The top choice for the violin concerto is Brüggen/Zehetmair, no doubt.
Although if you can grab the Tafelmusik/Beths that is also coupled with Immerseel's "Emperor", you wouldn't be doing badly for either of those. I quite like that disk.
I haven't any version of the Trio Concerto, so no rec there.
That's all 7 of them, I'm afraid. :-\

Strongly second this suggestion. Bought it a few months ago and love it. Great DDD sound, balance and blend, and Lubin does not use the same fortepiano in all 5 concertos. He uses different keyboards that were authentic at the time each concerto was composed/performed. He also records several of the piano sonatas to fill out each CD. Great buy.

Indeed it is, and the different instruments are highly interesting and fit Hogwood's "MO" of investigating the exact circumstances of the first performances of all the pieces.

I like that set, too, not so much for Gardiner's once again completely streamlined and beautified "kind of HIP" contribution, but that is totally offset here by Levin's great playing. Levin is a real "HIP" expert, he can even improvise cadenzas. I have seen him do that in a workshop, people would give him a theme, and he would improvise on that in the classical style :o

Indeed one should - all recommendations made here are contained there already, plus the VERY interesting recording of concerti 4/5 by Arthur Schoonderwoerd and Cristofori (Alpha) recommended by Bunny. BTW, I first saw that disc mentioned by
Rod at a Beethoven forum and would like to thank him for such an insightful suggestion. :)
I don't know how this flew under my radar, but now that I have discovered it I am enjoying it very much.

Along with the five concertos, the set comes with two chamber versions of Nos. 2 and 4. All very interesting and well played.
