Hopefully I'll have time tomorrow to give it a listen.

Men profess to be lovers of music, but for the most part they give no evidence in their opinions and lives that they have heard it.  ~ Henry David Thoreau

Hot off the press, or at least new to CD, I picked this recently released recording:

  [asin]B006IOOXLY[/asin]

I have Massenet's Manon, thought this would be a nice complement. I could not find a single review of this recording so I am taking a risk here??  ???

Marvin! That is an excellent recording. This is at least its second re-release. It was originally a Philips disc, and has been a leading version of this opera ever since. Carreras is not my favorite, but he's pretty good here. Von Stade is her usual amazing self. Allen and Lloyd are also fine. Hope you enjoy it!!

No risk at all. I've had it in my collection about twenty years. It's a great recording of my favorite Massenet opera. Von Stade is to die for, and I think Carreras is terrific too (in his prime, recorded in 1980)). Penguin says, "Davis has rarely directed a more sensitive or more warmly expressive performance on record....Von Stade makes an enchanting Charlotte, outshining her rivals..." Here's the original Philips packaging:

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Well, regarding the string quartets set, I believe it was a wise move: it's cheap and top notch at the same time.  :)

WOW this recording has been around!!  You know I went looking for reviews......there were none to be found so I asked the sales clerk behind the counter if it were any good and he informed me that he did not know as it was just released!  Well I am pleased with the positive feedback.

PS: Between my latest opera acquisitions, all posted here, the complete SYMPHONIIES of Langgaard, Pettersson and soon to arrive Atterberg by listening "schedule" has been set for the next 2 months!

It's a good thing you and Sarge don't live on the same block (for the delivery person)! That's a nice haul, of which I have nothing. We're relying on you Harry! :)

V. Holmboe
Complete String Quartets
Kontra Quartet
dacapo

Ah, that reminds me, I owe Karl an answer as to how I am getting along with those string quartets.

I have to admit: Not very well. They're dense, tightly argued, and so far they haven't communicated with me at all. Surely the most thorny or unwieldy music of Holmboe's.

As Bob Reilly writes in "Surprised by Beauty": "little surface charm, and require repeated acquaintance to reveal their very considerable treasures. Anyone who appreciates Bartok's or DSCH's quartets should have no trouble with them."

First part: yes... second part: well... I didn't come into Holmboe's quartets (from loving Bartok & DSCH) thinking: Oh my, here's the overlooked third 20th Ct. String Quartet man. I feel much more like that about Villa Lobos than Holmboe. But perhaps eventually, they will yield? How do you get along with them?

Thread duty:

Listen What the Cat Dragged In:

Henry Purcell et al.
"Love's Madness"
Songs of Purcell, Locke, Ravenscroft et al.
Dorothee Mields,
Lautten Compagney Berlin, W.Katschner
Carus 83.371

Oh. My. Gawd! What a terrific, stupendous release. Totally unsuspected, unsolicited CD. I pop it into the player after listening to the other CD that came that day (Mahler, Third Symphony, Mariss Jansons, BRSO, N.Stutzmann, BR Klassik) -- and POW!

Dorothee Mields and her musical colleagues rock Purcell et al. so fucking hard, I was reminded of the Tom Cruise dance scene in Risky Business.
Things get more mellow as well, and the album ends on a very somber note ("With drooping wings"), but the opening "Bedlam Boys" and "'Tis Women makes us love" alone are rock-em, sock-em hardcore early baroque. I'm listening to the damn thing the tenth time in a row, now.

Can't speak of the others, but the Pleyel and Roussel CDs are excellent.

I hope you enjoy it. I find the works very rewarding but some find them kind of arid - but you like Maconchy (as do I) so it should be no problem :)!

Edit: I just notice Jens confirmed much the same. I think that the DSCH/Bartók comparison of the reviewer is way off-base - they are similarly "big" achivements, but aside from being modern-era string quartets, they share little in common.
