Those Scherchen Beethoven 4 and 5 are just amazing. Recorded in 1955 in excellent mono sound (wide dynamic range and very good definition). Scherchen chooses tempi that are very fast, but never sound rushed. Timings are almost identical to Zinman's (6:50 in 5:I, exposition repeat included!) but the similarity ends there. Zinman's interpretations are formulaic and completely predictable. Scherchen's are manic, angry, impulsive, unsettled and unsettling. Never a dull moment, but it's always Beethoven. Actually, that pretty much sums it up: I hear Beethoven, not a conductor's view on his music. And the London orchestra is really amazing. I've NEVER heard the introduction to 4:I sound so menacing and crepuscular. The low winds and brass are simply astounding.

Rolf von Otter's downloads are cd copies form vinyl lps. Some surface noise is to be heard. They are not issued commercially. I urge everyone to download them while they're still available. rolf should replace them in a few days.

Rolf has found a sonically revamped version of the great van Otterloo Beethoven overtures record. Sizzling stuff.

Not to be missed: a download of Brahms' first concerto with Curzon and van Beinum (1953 Decca). I believe it's from an original lp, not a cd reissue.

Thanks for all the links! Great stuff.  Cheesy I'll join in here -

Esa-Pekka Salonen - Piano Concerto - World Premiere

LA Times Review of Concert

A must-hear. Fantastic piece! Another strong work from Salonen. Can't wait until the LAPO records this next season. Bronfman is a monster, just unreal playing.

This is a ZIP file, about 100 MB. The "Introduction" is a 10 min interview with Bronfman and Salonen about the piece, apparently Yefim teased that it wasn't hard enough in the first draft - so Salonen revised it and made it fiendishly difficult!  Grin

I asked the person who sent it to me, he said it was the SFO. Beyond that, he didn't know. Sorry.  Undecided

Thanks. I googled left and right and couldn't find anything other than a mention that he has toured the world with that concerto. I suppose that with his very particular kind of tempi (he runs it close to 50 minutes) there's no chance we're being pulled a Hatto ! laugh

Is anyone else having trouble downloading the Salonen PC? I've been clicking that link something like once an hour for the past two days, and I keep getting all sorts of "server busy" messages. For istance, right now, they tell me: "All download slots assigned to your country (Poland) are currently in use. Please try again in a few hours" (sometimes it's also a message saying that all download slots are currently taken by subscribers). ARGH! Angry
