I am happy to see that we are in the majority that praise the label CPO for their good work. I can only support what has been said about the excellent boxed sets of Atterberg en Pettersson, to name a few. I find it hard to condemn any record label. Let's be pleased of the variety of the supply on the classical cd market.

Well put.  Only chronic complainers bitch about certain classical music labels.

It seems you and a few others were just hurt because some of us show more loyalty to other labels. I named two competing German labels (MDG, Tacet) that I prefer. Comparing and preferring is what this is about. It is strange and perhaps immature, that one would think comparing and preferring is the same as complaining or bitching.

Actually, CPO does pretty well by the three B's:

Complete Bach Organ Works - Weinberger (historical organs)

Whole-heartedly seconded.
Other must-have-CPOs are the 2CD set with JSBach harpsichord concertos with Lars Ulrik Mortensen, and Lutger Remy´s Händel suites and Froberger suites sets.

You must have quite an ego to think that anything you say could hurt my feelings.  For me, comparing recordings is a large part of what it's all about; I never make comparisons among labels nor do I ever buy a disc because of its label.  Put another way, I feel zero loyalty to any label.

So, you can "bitch away" and rest assured that you won't be disturbing me; you'll only be showing your lack of appreciation for a label's strengths.

Right you are.  From what I know of CPO releases, the company does a very good job of presenting music from a host of countries and time periods.

How many discs does this span, Don?

I have 10 CPO CDs. I wish I had 100!

me too!   Shocked after a look at the list of composers they have on cd i could find a whole bunch that i want. many of bach's heroes/influences, for example, are on cpo cds, and it's hard to find them elsewhere. there are reincken, biber, fux, graupner & others.

i played pachelbel's easter canatas today for the first time in a while & i say if you like drums & trumpets you'll definitely like that cd. it's very tasteful (not over the top like biber's salzburg mass for example) & in general very well performed.

Let me add, that I own all the chamberworks CPO recorded, from Raff, and they were more than excellent, in fact bloody good.
As to the Symphonies, there are only 2 cd's with the Symphonies, and they attracted great critical acclaim.
In due time all the Symphonies of Raff will be released, since they are all recorded a while ago.
As I remember well Sarge thought very highly of them, so when released I will buy them.....of course.

CPO's Raff symphonies are fine and, as I remember, are recommended by the Raff Society, an organisation that I cannot determine whether it is easily pleased or difficult to please.

Werner Andreas Albert's set of the Four Seasons is quite old in that he uses the Philharmonia Hungarica long disbanded by Helmut Kohl looking for Federal Budget cuts.

In fact it was hearing this 10th on the radio that persuaded me to buy the double-CD set.

As for the complete Pettersson symphonies, the current issue of Gramophone gives them a favourable review whilst recognising that where Segerstam has recorded them his must be first choice. I am not sure that I agree with that view but have not the luxury of purpose to buy all the available recordings of the Pettersson symphonies whilst recognising that some CPO performances are, clearly, better than others. Francis stands out and with a SCOTTISH orchestra!

I know it would be nice if they were at Naxos prices and they could call on the excellent consistency of a Lloyd-Jones but it, appears, not to be.

CPO have given so much over the years it seems churlish to criticise.

I await their next issue in anticipation!

Yeah, I hate it how much German (middle) baroque is negleted by record labels. CPO is doing great job in this area.

How can a Biber fan say Biber's music is over the top?  Huh

Elgar's music possesses a very personal style, which is permeated by a very wide range of European influences: "His melody is reminiscent of Tchaikovsky, his spirituality of Franck; he possesses Beethoven's greatness and Brahms' distance...his masterly craft is reminiscent of Berlioz." -Eric Blom

the over-the-top-ness is exactly what i like about that salzburg mass of biber's. Tongue however, i think the pachelbel thing is more 'musical' if that makes any sense.
