Nonsense.  Shostakovich knew people who were lost in the 900 Days, and he would not have dedicated to the people of his city any piece which he 'didn't even like himself'.

I hardly think that the disdainful term 'overhyped' gets any purchase on this piece.  It is a unique achievement in the arts, and is rightly a symbol of the activities of culture enduring in the face of barbarous violence.
If anything, it's one of his most underrated symphonies, because of the attitude.  I personally love this piece, hell, it's in my top three of Shostakovich's symphonies. 1 Being the mighty 10, and the 2nd and 3rd are 5th and 7th, interchangeably.  I personally love the march in the first movement, I adore the 3rd movement, and the 4th is one of the best finale's in music.

I mean, it's my own personal opinion, but it's far from trash.  Very, VERY far from trash

that's the movement i take issue with

cut and paste ad infinitum does not a symphony make, ESPECIALLY if the material is annoying in the first place. it's like a trashy patriotic bolero
There's a lot more than "cut and Pasting".

If you seriously think it is, I suggest getting your hearing checked.

Well, darnit, but I just love the Bolero............................... Cheesy

I happen to find the grandeur and intensity to be quite stimulating, and the repitition doesn't annoy me, but heightens the already existing interest and excitment.  Yet, I realize that some may not have the reaction (I played it once for one of my brothers and he hated it).

So to each his bloody own.

Very subtle allusion to the first movement of the 'Leningrad' Symphony, in the Eighth Quartet, too.

there's a hell of a lot in the eight quartet, but you can go overboard with the quotes. if it's that subtle it may not be there. where abouts is it?

Hmmm.... I really doubt is just a hearing problem.
