For children that young to play at such levels is a major accomplishment, however it happened.

Even if they are chinese.  Grin

That clarinetist looks awfully young. It's hard to believe he's not lip-syching.
And yet his fingers are going to the right places at the right time with the music. Yow!

Last week on NPR's program "From the Top", which they bill as "The Showcase for Young Performers", there was a piano trio composed of 7 & 8 year olds who played Haydn's late Eb piano trio in a manner to rival the BAT. In the post playing interview section, the host noted that the pianist's feet didn't reach the pedals, to which he suavely responded "you don't need the pedals to play Haydn".  Smiley

Heard an interview recently with Alfred Brendel, where he said that he wasn't a child prodigy, his parents weren't musical, and that he was no good at sight reading. I think that's enormously encouraging.

Yes you do. If you are not good enough to deal with hard legato passages.  Tongue
(I guess the boy didn't have that problem either)

Manuel, you should never use the pedal to disguise a lack of legato in your fingers.  It's fine if the music calls for it, or if it's physically impossible to play something legato; but I suspect neither of these conditions are extant in Haydn. Smiley

It's not a lack of legato what I'm hiding... but more a lack of studying.  Grin

I have big hands (I can easily play a 12th)* and I can find the legato if practice enough... That's exactly what I've been doing in the B flat Haydn sonata I'm studying now. I mean... I've been improving legato, not the size of my hand...

I outsized my previous piano teacher's hands, to the point that he could not play Bach-Brahms Chaconne with ease; having him to play arpeggio many chords I had not problems doing plaqué.

I've completed the first mov a few hours ago. But it's still perfectible... With such a charming coda, I feel like studying lots of hours.
