I think I'll probably get Kovacevich's EMI set, then; that and Salonen's Stravinsky box set on Sony. Oh, I really shouldn't carry credit cards with me...

Nice choice, I got the Kovacevich set last week and have heard about half. I find it to be a solid, agressive and exciting reading these works. Overstock has the best price on it BTW.

Not fair to Todd at all.  Maybe Todd does have a desire to own almost every LvB piano sonata cycle, but his reviews clearly show that he does not "love" them all.  Acquiring and loving are two different things.

Dear heavens. Do I really have to utilize the "big grin" rather than the "eye roll" emoticon for you to recognize that I'm gently kidding--not criticizing--our resident LvB sonata maven? Besides, Todd most obviously loves to listen to Beethoven in all these many interpretations, whether his evaluation of the performance be pro or con. And through his commentary, we are the wiser and the richer for it.

Cheers,

Dirk

That overstock?  Smiley

The local store sells it for about 60 euros.

With international shipping and handling, customs, duties, taxes and insurance charges, it comes to about 78 euros ($101 US).  Shocked police

Hadn't counted on that, Sorry!  Grin

Please let me know what you think once you've heard it. It might be my fave. I think he combines elements of many of my fave perf. He has Gulda's polish, Annie's fire and Kempff's beauty. Add to that a more agressive Beethoven than I have ever heard and you have the makings of a classic cycle.

Are you messing with me? If so, shame on you.  Tongue

If no, you totally got me confused with some other earthling.

OK, fair enough. It is funny that sometimes the recordings I like the least at first, later turn out to become a fave. This is also true of Backhaus, though he takes longer for me to get into.

Same here, and others that I initially like I grow to dislike! Cheesy  I initially didn't like Kempff's LvB cycle, nor Schnabel's recordings... isn't that funny? Grin

With the Kempff, I totally hear you. With the Schnabel, I liked him all along.
