Well considering the horn part to Blue Danube (and every other friggin waltz in creation) is:

rest -- bop-- bop -- rest -- bop -- bop

I would have to say "no".

I'm with Hornteacher on this one. Booo-ring. But the horn parts and the viola parts are usually the same for Strauss, so that is to be expected.

That said, I would much rather hear the Blue Danube than play it.

And that said, I went to Vienna this summer and spent a good amount of time near the Danube, and it really isn't blue. Lies, I tell you, LIES!

Nor is it really in Vienna, which comes as a surprise the first time...

As to the waltz, of course what happens is rest-bop-bop for about half the orchestra, and bop-rest-rest for most of the others, while the first violins play a tune.

That New Year concert... Looks and sounds like something thought up in Brussels. The Eurovision Kitsch contest.

No, it is monotonous and the melody seems very poor to me. The only things I can hear of Johann Strauss are the "Fliedermaus" and the Waltz "Legends of Wienn's woods".

Its a beautifull piece of genius, but so is all the music from Strauss!

To hear it once a year is more than enough, I would have thought.

I actually love the Blue Danube, when it's played well, and many other Strauss waltzes, too.  I've renewed my acquaintance with many of them in the last few years, thanks to a friend who gave me a copy of an old Reiner recording of them (wonderful), and also Franz Welser-Möst, who occasionally does them as encores in his concerts with the Cleveland Orchestra.

Further, like a lot of other music, these waltzes have more to offer than just the melodies.  Of course, that's what we love, but the orchestration and texture are also crucial to their success.

Lehar wrote a waltz entitled "On the Beautiful Grey Danube" Grin ...so obviously things have changed quite seriously, if it ever was blue to start with...

Johann Strauss is beautiful to listen to, and when I'm feeling a little blue I know it's time to pull out a disc or two from the Marco Polo complete edition... the Emperor Waltz was one of the original pieces that got me into classical music, and I still prefer it by a large margin over the Blue Danube. It's beautiful and perfect and elegant ... Strauss had a melodic gift that made others jealous. Some of my favorite tunes come from Roses from the South, Be Embraced Ye Millions, Voices of Spring, and the Pasman-Walzer, which I have to mention in every Strauss thread...

All that said, an hour of Strauss consecutively has to be done very well to not get monotonous. Some of the Marco Polo discs get boring (particularly Alfred Walter's outings) but the New Year's Day concerts...mmm lovely... *closes eyes and reminisces*

I have heard it stated by more than one professional musician that Johann Strauss jr. was one of the greatest composers and his Blue Danube his master piece.
