Skimming through various opera related publications I thought we need one thread dealing with general news, not focusing on one certain opera or one specific performer. For instance in the February issue of Opera is this startingly interesting news:
"Simon Keenlyside will sing his first Wozzeck in Paris in 2008." - and:
"John Adams's Doctor Atomic will receive its first Met performance during the 2008-9 season, staged by Peter Sellars.

Great news about Keenlyside, who should be fantastic in that role. The more surprising (and pleasing) news is about the Adams piece! (Must be one of the signs that Peter Gelb is going to put his own stamp on the Met's repertoire, which may not be a bad thing at all.) --Bruce

Today's Wall Street Journal has an article about an opera day at West Point!
Apparently the professors in various subjects prepared the students with background, and the reaction was a standing ovation. A colonel is quoted as saying: "The appreciation of art is important for any educated person."
Excerpts from Monetverdi's and Glück's versions of Orfeo, Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Bizet's Carmen, and even Carlisle Floyd's Susannah were on the program.
And here is your tax dollars at work: this is part of an NEA project called the Great American Voices Military Base Tour.
See page D8 of the WSJ.

West Point and Opera embedded? Glory be, there is hope yet for opera specifically and classical music in general. Daniel Barenboim has been released from the Berlin hospital after treatment and will start his US tour tomorrow.

Thank you for the article, providing hours of recalling French lessons from years ago! The nicest part of the article is the picture of Dawn Upshaw in Saarahio's opera L'Amour de Loin. By any chance, has there been a change of heart taken place in your previous opinion?

Dawn upshaw is barely recognisable in that photo - she looks like a woman.
The answer to your question is "no".

"Disturbance of his sense of balance"? WTF? I just hope he's fine on the 11th I have tickets to see him and Lupu do the Mozart concerto for two pianos with the Staatskapelle plus assorted Mozart symphonies at Carnegie.

Daniel Barenboim has been released from hospital after suffering from "a disturbance of his sense of balance".
He's been listening too many times to his recordings of Bach's WTC.

Daniel Barenboim has been released from hospital after suffering from "a disturbance of his sense of balance". The conductor was released after doctors found no signs of serious illness. BBC News reports Sounds like Menieres syndrome or positional vertigo. Neither is particularly serious, just seriously inconvenient and nauseating. It's usually related to a viral infection.

I know someone with a condition along those lines, and it's no laughing matter. It's caused him a lot grief. Hopefully everything will be fine with Mr. Barenboim.

Here's more hoping for a full recovery. I have a lot of respect for Daniel Barenboim, and I hope he's got a lot of music left.
