"Little Serenade" for flute, clarinet, viola and cello

Hey,

This was supposed to be the first movement of a String Quartet ... but I realized... it's texture isn't really a string quartet, therefore I decided to make it a little chamber piece called 'Little Serenade' for flute, clarinet, viola and cello.

OK, since you asked: I like the opening theme but you seem to get stuck in repeating it over and over rather than in creating a quartet movement that has some sense of contrast or direction. I also feel you're not using the resources of all four instruments, placing too much emphasis on the upper violin. The best composers for quartet never treated the texture as violin with accompaniment, but rather as a conversation between equals.

Larry, thanks for your comment. You're right ... I realized it's not a very good texture for a String Quartet, therefore I made some changes in instrumentation ... perhaps it sounds a bit better like this ... what do you think?
