Congratulations Matti! When Mike wakes up tomorrow morning - this morning - he'll lop some of that mud at me! Maybe a few splatters at you too for beating him to it.  Kiss

Thanks, Lis. Mike will be not envious as he hears the reason why I woke up at 4.30 am and switched on the computer: the damned dogs of ours started to bark.  Angry

What an entertaining and stimulating place GMG is! Friends loudly and emphatically expressing their opinions and still being loved, or at least tolerated!

Mike, have you listened to her Ainadamar?  Huh

No, I don't have that one, I thought that was by our friend Golijov. I have his version and it is a particular favoutite. I do have the 'Loin' thing by Ms Saariaho, musical statues, stasis and stupor. But of course, at some point I will have to give some other of her pieces a spin. It is not very many years until I retire....that sounds about right.

Mike, you are stepping on to T.C.'s territory, he is the one to point out my multitude of senior moments!Thank too, Luv!

I have not seen Adriana Mater, but I read about it and all the action seems to be taken on dry land instead of 6" of water!  Wink

The UK premiere of Adriana Mater will be given at the Barbican next year - 24 April 2008 - in a concert performance.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Edward Gardner, with singers Solveig Kringelborn, Monica Groop and Gordon Gietz.

This could be your chance Mike to better acquant yourself with Saariaho's work.  As its a concert performance you also won't be distracted by nothing actually happening during the opera!

I've got a ticket just to see what its like.

Rape scene from Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk

Mike

After a long search for a thread on the ROH 2006 production of this opera, I settled on Mike's posting of a scene photo because it involves the same two actors: Christopher Ventries and Eva-Maria Westbroek as the ones I watched yesterday on a TV broadcast tape. To my knowledge this is the third time those two performed the Shostakovich.

The main subject is the beautiful singing and acting of Westbroek. She is amazing, truly spectacular. A voice without any flaws and an actress portraying Katerina as what she is called by Sergey: A slut.

Not so Ventris. I would think after the third time he has learned to get more involved in his role, be Sergey, not standing outside looking into the character. Yes, his voice is faultless, but lacks the passion, horniness needed for this role.

Ah and there is John Tomlinson as Boris! No doubt he is beyond his Wotan glory days but he still can sing and, most of all, can act. He dies as impressively as Shostakoviches Boris as he does as the Mussorgsky one!

The direction of Richard Jones is lacklustre, now and then a unique idea like letting chorus members hang wallpaper - or was it the supernumeraries? - but with Westbroek dominating every scene, it was not difficult to ignore the directing.

Anybody here who attended the performance or watched the TV broadcast? And what do you have to say about it?  Huh

Hi Lis,

Westbroek was absolutely stunning as Katerina Ismailova.  As you say, a remarkable voice and incredibly committed acting.

I saw the first night of this revival and was knocked out by her portrayal as was the rest of the audience judging by their response.  There had already been cheers and bravos aplenty for Ventris and Tomlinson (especially Tomlinson), but when she came out for her curtain call, the audience nearly lifted the roof off of Covent Garden; I have rarely heard such sustained cheering.  In fact, Westbroek seemed to be completely overwhelmed by the strength of response.

I enjoyed the production much more than you appeared to and think it is one of the best at the Opera House in recent years; perhaps seeing it live made the whole thing much more vivid and dramatic and maybe this doesn't come across as well on TV.

I have found some more pictures, in addition to those on the DVD cover
