One that is very overdue is a complete Wagner, the non-operatic works, giving the full picture of the man- most other major composers have had complete editions for years.
As a Scarlatti addict, another sonatas survey would be good, to compliment the very servicable but slightly muted Scott Ross.
Better representations of lesser medieval composers- too many don't have their own discs and are only part of compilations.

Never mind compiling sets - there are loads of music never put on CD so far.
I, for one, would like Henryk Melcer's 2 Piano Concertos (anyone from Hyperion reading this forum??)...

If I started thinking about it, I'm sure the list would be frightening! But I very much agree with this: Better representations of lesser medieval composers- too many don't have their own discs and are only part of compilations. I wonder how easy it would be to put this into practice though - many of the most fascinating minor figures are only known by a handful of pieces. Still, I await the complete Perusio edition impatiently  (should cover at least two discs, I think) |

What I'd like to see: In the fall of '04 Barenboim conducted a few performances of Schubert's Great C major symphony with the CSO that were taped by the CSO and are kept in the Rosenthal audio archives of the orchestra (source of their many fine "from the archives" releases). My parents heard two of those three performances and said they were mindbogglingly brilliant - for the ages. I heard Barenboim perform the same on tour in Carnegie with the CSO the next season. I have never before or after heard that symphony played like that. I hope dearly that the CSO releases a commercial CD of these performances.
There are also a few very talented younger conductors who have not appeared on commercial CDs so far that I hope will soon record some of their work. In particular, I am thinking of Kirill Petrenko and Johannes Debus.

Has the Jochum EMI Beethoven cycle been released on CD yet? I got to know 1,2,4,8 & 9 from it; the earlier symphonies would probably sound a touch ponderous now but I miss their gravity...

Actually - same here. But thinking about it can be depressing... The Polish Radio, judging by what they broadcast, has something like a ton of recordings of Polish contemporary - and not contemporary - music but they release a measly 10 or 12 CDs a year  ... I'd also like to see more performances conducted by Henryk Czyż (Czyz) and Jan Krenz (they recorded quite a lot in the LP days). Also a rerelease of Moniuszko's Halka conducted by Semkow (currently $225 from Amazon Marketplace). And... But the list would indeed be endless. Maciek |
