Gurn: you'r right!. The guy I'am thinking of had a huge 2
mouvements unfinished SQ.My recording last almost 28'
The piece is almost unknown.
Luke: You've an A!. Yes sir, Fridays is a collective work of 16
short pieces for SQ, in hommage to the amateur violist, chamber lover, millonaire, mecenas and publisher Mitrofan Belaieff, who
protect the five, and many other russian musicians;edited his works and give them money.
They were Blumenfeld,Glazunov,Sokolov,Withol,Liadov,Rimsky,
Borodin and others.
B-La-F was an other present to Belaieff. It's a complete SQ in 4
mouv.by Rimsky, Liadov,Borodin and Glazunov.

The Violotta piece is by Draeseke: I happened to be investigating this the other day, when I was looking up stuff on the violotta ( mainly , could I play one, and could I buy one  Cheesy ).

2nd Question: HINDEMITH. I have it, in the set of the string quartets by the Kocian Quartet.

9th Question: I think it is Mendelssohn first string Quintet in A, opus 18.

Oh... I did not realize it was unfinished. I had thought it was intended to be a 2 movement work.

Come to think of it, if his almost one hour long Piano Trio is anything to judge by, a string 4tet from him would probably last an hour or more has he finished it!

Come on Carlos, don't I get the points for the violotta question? Did I give the wrong answer? Or do I have to explain what a violotta is, too?
Okay, a violotta is an instrument held like a viola, but larger and tuned a fourth lower. It was designed to be a middle voice between viola and 'cello.

YES sir, and the Draeseke quintet is a lovely work,
almost nobody knows (except chamber maniacs
like me). It's the only known piece that uses the
violotta. And sounds goood. But I image that you
have to be 6 ft.tall at least and with very long arms to be confortable with it.

This is a puzzling quizz ! I have only answer so far for the 2) Minimax is a pastiche from Hindemith.
Sorry, I haven't read Val's post before writing this. The Lekeu SQ is indeed superb.

Well, I've said that is for chamber experts, and I
mean experts. But I admit that if I didn't have the
recordings, I wouldn't answer my own questions.

I didn't know the Draeseke piece was actually recorded! Cheesy I would have thought getting a violotta, making strings for it ect. would be too much of a trouble for such a little known work.
The quest to make an instrument between 'cello and viola has never been succesfull. There have been attemps in every generation, but neither small 'cello or large viola form ever took off.

Yes. it was recorded by the Acantus SQ,with an
other conventional string quintet. But I've only
a copy, so I can't tell who plays the violotta, nor
any information about the instrument or the luthier.

OK, no more answers, so I asume that nobody knows them
So, I'll finish the quiz:
1) Theodor Kirchner (1823-903). A guy who forship Brahms.
3) Tomás Bretón (1850-923)
7) An other present to boss Belaieff (B-La-F = Belaieff) for
his birthday. They are 3 short pieces for SQ: Glorification (Glazunov)
Song of Praise (Liadov) and Khorovod (Rimsky)
Cool Max Bruch
9) Luigi Cherubini (did you know that he had a string quintet?)
Tell me if you liked this quiz and in the future I'll do an other one, but no so easy  Wink Wink Wink

Hey, I got #7 at the same time I got #5, remember! Grin

I for one always like quizzes like this. Better fun than polls, and a nice break from the more intense stuff. Plus, a good way to learn trivia!
